[backstage] Google Wave - Too early for consumers

2009-12-02 Thread Ian Forrester
Hi All,

I was at Social Media Café Manchester yesterday and there was a session about
Wave. I and Paul Robertson stated the fact that the wave people are there
seeing isn't wave at all. Its simply a rough cut implementation of what's
possible with the wave protocol.

http://search.twitter.com/search?q=ands=wavephrase=ors=nots=tag=smc_mcrlang=allfrom=to=ref=near=within=15units=misince=2009-11-30until=2009-12-02rpp=15

So during the rest of the discussion and reading this -
http://orchard.co.uk/Blog/Google-Wave-much-maligned-but-missunderstood-128.aspx,
I'm wondered if Google had put out wave too early for consumers?

What do others think?

Right; the protocol seems sound enough, and I expect that (like
Novell) it will get picked up by projects that would have had to have
done the engineering on such a protocol themselves.

But there are relatively few of those projects, and so I don't expect
it will be soon that we see anything 'wow'-worth out of Wave. I think
it will get subsumed by projects that use it and we will know those by
their own names and indeed may come to know Wave itself by those
names; like people who use the web and that the web _is_ the
internet...

wondered if Google had put out wave too early for consumers?

As Scot said, its hardly had a consumer release. Anyone who is
involved in projects that might make use of such technology have heard
about it, understand it, and probably by now have a beta account.
What's the fuss? :-)

I can't say I agree with Andy Chesters - Google announced the open source, open
standard nature of Wave right back when the project itself was made public at
Google I/O 2009:

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/went-walkabout-brought-back-google-wave.html

No desire to to hide the fact that the technology is not exclusive to Google
that I can see.

I'm also not convinced that the performance issues with the Wave beta are
mainly (or even slightly) due to the fact that all the current Wave servers are
running in Google's data centres. Surely the spread of Wave servers to the far
corners of the Internet will make things worse, as bandwidths fall and latency
rises between the servers participating in a given Wave? Waves with
participants who all use the same server might see a performance increase I
guess, all other things being equal.

2009-12-01 Thread Ant Miller
I've found it a bit problematic- there's nothing wrong with the day to
day interaction, and the system though flakey is pretty good
considering what it's trying to do. However, the 'contriibutor
managment' model is really bad for a lot of situations.

It's really hard to find other users in Wave.
It's impossible to set t the outset what the distribution of a wave
should be (you have to assume that they WILL be public- dangerous
unless you live in a world without lawyers or Daily Mail journos!)
It's impossible to actively manage what waves YOU get attached to.

In essence it treats the world as a great big friendly share
everything playschool, where nobody even has surprise parties let
alone personal private conversations.

Unless it sorts this out, and introduces a robust (and I mean properly
robust) contributor management model I'd actual recommend we don't use
it for work dialogues.

On the other hand for properly public conversatios, like these, it
might well be an excellent tool. Maybe. Not sure.

I’d recommend waiting for a self-hosted server for “proper” use. I’d
consider Google’s server to be more of a proof-of-concept than
anything useful for real purposes.

On the other hand for properly public conversatios, like these, it

If the UX was cleaned up and streamlined a bit, then yeah, could
supplant mailing lists/discussion groups to an extent.

Its worse because you know the rules of email at the outset before you
start playing.
Once people become familiar with wave then protocols and accepted
behaiviour will emerge, but for now, I'm finding the Oh I added you to
a work/holiday/pictures of my cat! wave phenomenon irritating as well
Is it possible to remove yourself from a wave and make it so people
can't add you back on?
I guess I would have expected some sort of 'you have been added to this
wave, do you accept?' notification and a notification to all other users
that you got added

Anyone know what the rules are to upload a photo for your profile pic.

I've got a small 50x46 pixel jpg file but it just won't accept it:

One or more of the files you selected could not be uploaded. They may be
too large or not valid image files. Please check the files and your
internet connection and then try again.

I tired larger and worked my way down, then got bored.

That sounds somewhat easier: there are more ponies in the world than
Google Wave invites.

Nobody who gets invites from Google is getting invites of their own yet. So
we will all just have to wait.

If you haven't watched it, I really recommend you watch Lars's demo that
is online. It is an hour and a half or so, but it gives a VERY good feel
for what they think is possible. I stuck it on the phone and watched it
on the commute. I got quite excited at some points.

Uh, yeah, I should. I've got a long train journey on thursday. I might
well follow your lead

As a support company I am immensely excited about what this can do for
us and our customers internal and external communication. I think (and
hope) it will be a massive success as we could really use a tool like
this.

I really hope it works out for you.

It's possible it will grow on me, but at the moment I
was just *bored* by it from what I've seen of it so far.

I kind of like how I have an email client, IM client and a wiki and am a
bit uncomfortable and nonplussed by them all being put in one place.

When there is a native, free software application which isn't as
resource hungry as the AJAX *abuse* going on there I might feel a bit
more encouraged.

We'll see what happens, but to be honest, if it was a choice between a
pony and a google wave invite, a pony is probably going to be more exciting.

Tim

P.s. anyone who thinks they need a google wave invite to be cool should
sign up to pokebook.co.uk - you'll be so cool you won't need wave at all. ;)

[backstage] Google Wave

2009-10-07 Thread Ian Forrester
Changing the long running threads (don't think I'm not watching)

Now Google Wave invites are out there and more of you have had a chance
to play with wave. What do people think? And why is no one building a
decent client for it?

Am I the only excited person?

Give it time… the people most likely to do this may not even have
access to the preview yet ;)

Nope. It shows a huge amount of potential (although it’s quite buggy
at the moment). IM+Email+Docs+…stuff, all built on XMPP? I’ll take
three!

(I’m finding it quite buggy at the moment, though).

I’m nevalic...@googlewave.com, should anybody feel the need. A search
for “with:public” is quite a good place to start for those who are new
to it.

I think most everyone else is embarrassed to admit they'd quite like an invite.

I'd quite like an invite.

Main thing I'm positive about so far, is that XMPP deserves serious
attention and this will help it get some...

I had a Wave Sandbox account for some time. Thought it was very 'meh'.

Blogged about it here:

Re: [backstage] Google Wave

2009-10-07 Thread Richard Lockwood
As would I. On one hand I'd like an invite, on the other I'd rather
gouge my eyes out than have one. The way Google pass their invites
out is very clever-clever in building up a market, but it marks them
out as c***s. I've worked with all kinds of Google stuff and been to
various Google conferences over the years but this time I don't get an
invite, whereas I have friends who couldn't give the square root of
f*** all about Google who've been granted an invite.

F**k 'em and the horse they rode in on.
