Re: [backstage] Google homepage module

2005-12-16 Thread vijay chopra
Interesting, I've got it working in Opera 8.51 by removing all content
(it seems it was one of the other modules or a combination that Opera
didn't like), and adding it first (well after developer.xml), but I
still can't get it working in firefox. I'm still using 1.0.7, so maybe
it's a firefox issue? I'm also testing on winXP.

Hope I've been of some help
Vijay

Great idea, but for some reason it dosn't work in firefox. At first I
thought it didn't work, but checked in IE and found it apparantly
working fine. I don't know if this is the problem with your code or the
API, as it (and the rest of google personal) dodn't work in Opera
either.

Good Work
Vijay.Strange - I've got it (my module in particular, and the google.com/ig site in general) working on Firefox
1.5, IE 6 and Opera 8.51 under Win XP (but haven't tested on other OSes).

I should also mention the advantage of using mine or marios module addons opposed to using rss feeds is that i found google caches the rss feed so the now and next data can be hours out of date, while the modules are live (or near enough live based on how long they are cached on mine or marios server)

just beat me to it, although my system for now and next is more convulted (although you can choose from all the bleb.org
channels with my module).Generate a selection of channels @
http://tv.blueghost.co.uk/nn.php using the google.com/ig builder at the top of the page and add
http://tv.blueghost.co.uk/google_ig_nn.xml
to google as mario mentions above. The module defaults to channels 1-5. This doesn't work too well around midnight as it doesn't get the next program for the following day, although i am working to fix that. Ideally google will let the user select a number of channels from a list, but currently they only support single-option combo boxes)
You can also get a single channel listing (currently 1 day only). You can customise this in google.com/ig by clicking the Edit link on the module and selecting the channel. The url for this one is

Google have yesterday released their homepage API which lets users create widgets for the Google personalised homepage (
google.com/ig). This works very similarly to the way gadgets work on
live.com, so last night (with minimal effort) I have ported my existing what's on now/next

live.com gadget to become a Google homepage module.
If Google accept it, it should eventually appear in their directory (http://www.google.com/ig/directory

), in the meantime if you're interested you can install it by adding the developer module from the
google.com/ig page (click Add Content Create a Section and enter developer.xml in the text field), then add my module from the url

http://backstage.menti.name/google/nownext.xmlThis is a direct port, so functionality-wise it does exactly the same as the

live.com gadget (auto-refreshes every 10 minutes, manual refresh button, hover over program title to see synopsis).
Comments and feedback welcome as always, cheers,Mario.
