[BackupPC-users] Strange behavior when using backuppc with rsyncd or rsync+ssh

2008-09-09 Thread Louis-Marie Mouton

Hi,

I'm trying to configure a backuppc solution to transparently do a remote
backup of laptops. The server is running ubuntu 8.04 with the packaged
version of backuppc installed.

All the laptops are connected to the server's network using an openvpn
tunnel (their upload bandwidth is supposed to be around 128kB/s), some
of them are running windows (with rsyncd+cygwin) and others are linux
machines (with rsync+ssh and keys). These laptops initially have a few
GB of data to backup (not expected to change that often...)

When I manually request a full backup of a linux laptop, the process
starts and begin to fetch data from remote host. If I manually stop it
for CGI interface, I get a clean partial backup. The problem is when a
host disconnects from the network, backuppc doesn't seem to see that
change and continues being in backup running state. After a long time
(maybe around the 2-hours timeout or when the nightly wakeup occurs:
both are possible in my test conditions!), the backup aborts and in the
host summary I have a new full backup (not a partial one as I would have
expected). As a consequence, even if the laptop reconnects, backuppc
will not retry to get in sync.

Does anyone know whether this behavior is normal? If I'm missing
something, do you think backuppc could match my needs and what should I
do to have the laptops being polled until I get one real full backup
each day?

I also have a remark about backuppc pooling feature: I think the server
locally detects file duplicates by hashing them after download. As far
as I know, rsync should also be able to send some kind of hash from
remote host before download. Wouldn't it be possible to detect
duplicates using this hash before the file is downloaded? This would for
example save downloading files again when a user simply renames a
directory...

Thanks for your help,

Louis-Marie

[BackupPC-users] [SPAM] LOW * Disabling backups via BackupsDisable instead of FullPeriod

2008-09-09 Thread Nils Breunese (Lemonbit)
Hello,

I noticed some outdated documentation.

The 'Removing a client' section under 'Other installation topics' [0]
says to set $Conf{FullPeriod} to a negative value to disable backups
for a client. However, the documentation on $Conf{BackupsDisable} [1]
says:

In versions prior to 3.0 Backups were disabled by setting
$Conf{FullPeriod} to -1 or -2.

Could this be corrected?

Nils Breunese.

[BackupPC-users] Is BackupPC still a no go with Fedora F9?

2008-09-09 Thread Arch Willingham
I never could get BackupPC to work with Fedora F9. It works fine with F8. I
recently upgraded the F8 machine to F9 and BackupPC no longer works (tree
connect failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
). It seems like there was some issue with having to downgrade Samba or
something like that. Does anyone remember?

Thanks!

Arch.

I dunno about Samba , but it works great with rsync.

Why would you use samba anyway, isn't rsync better?

I thought it had something to do with a change in the way smbclient
parses its argument list but I don't remember any solution.

[BackupPC-users] Question regarding BackupPC_tarPCCopy

2008-09-09 Thread Hendrik Friedel
Hello,

I moved the data of my backups according to the wiki (rsync -a).
Now, I'm trying to restore the symlinks. For that I issue these commands:
cd /mnt/sda5/BackupPC/pc ;
/usr/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_tarPCCopy /var/lib/BackupPC/pc/ |tar xvPF -

This takes ages, which is ok, but I'm logged in to the server via ssh, so
that using the nohup command would be useful. This has the drawback, that
the nohup.out is empty, so that I cannot monitor the process.
Furthermore: Would it be possible to limit the BackupPC_tarPCCopy command to
one host only?

Greetings,
Hendrik

Re: [BackupPC-users] Backups getting smaller and missing data

2008-09-09 Thread Peter
I stopped ClamWin and executed a manual full backup and ran into the
same messages of the timeout.

Since getting Craig's email have thought and yea, possibly backing up
music and images is over kill. As these do not change regularly.
However, as I have now encountered this problem I prefer to fix it than
turn my back on it.

If the issue is with SMB, should I then go for rsyncd? If so, then I
have the issue that when I did try rsyncd some months ago, I had the
backup running for hours and hours and hours, when it should have
completed in about one hour in total. This was using rsyncd from the
BackupPC download on cygwin. I read a message from a month or so that
someone recommended using rsyncd from the normal cygwin site. I'll go
back over the postings to see if I can find that one and look at more
closely. Will that resolve the slowness issue?

Hi Craig
Thanks for that information. I'm using ClamWin which I thought doesn't
do online scanning, only as per schedules created. Anyway I'll try and
disable the the AV and see if any difference is achieved. At the moment
I want to keep it simple and allow BackupPC to take care of the music
and image directories.

Thanks

This is the well-known timeout in smbclient caused by antivirus
software having to scan large files in the directory. This
causes smbclient to exit and the backup stops.

Disabling AV should solve the problem; perhaps you can have it
skip your music directories?

Tim Demarest reported several years ago that he could change
the hard-coded timeout value in smbclient to avoid this issue.

[BackupPC-users] SMB Signature verification failed - windows 2003

2008-09-09 Thread jsivak

I've just had this problem as well and here's what I did:

In smb.conf add the following in the [global] section:

client signing = no
client use spnego = no

I'm backing up an old Windows 2000 box, and without turning off client signing
and spnego I was getting errors on any file or directory that was longer than
8.3 (or so it seemed).

I'm running Samba 3.0.28a on Gentoo..
