As I understand it web servers are typically configured to serve responses with headers that describe the content's MIME type, allowing the browser to decide how to present it (render in a tab, launch an application, offer a File Save dialog). That's not useless funtionality, it's a standard feature of web servers - without it you would never have web pages rendered in your browser, you'd have to download the pages and then open them. The line I quoted from the documentation implies (to me, at least) that this is the expected behaviour when clicking on a link while browsing backups. I'm not asking for it to be added as a feature, I'm asking: 1) Am I correct in thinking that this is what the documentation means? 2) If yes, can anyone suggest where I should look to see what I have configured wrongly? 3) If no, what does the documentation mean? You have just been excommunicated by the Apache foundation. The machine running BackupPC has other stuff that is built on Nginx, and I really don't want a second web server on it. I run Apache everywhere else, so the Foundation will probably cut me a little slack. I'm a BackupPC newbie but I seem to have things up and running nicely. Seems a very impressive tool. One thing that doesn't seem to work for me as described in the documentation is the handling of files when browsing backups. The docs say: Your browser should prompt you with the filename and ask you whether to open the file or save it to disk. I took that to mean that I would have the option to view the contents of the file, either directly in the browser for content it can render (text, pdf etc.) or by opening the application associated with the relevant MIME type. I don't get that option though, I just get a File Save dialog box. That allows me to save the file locally, after which I can successfully open it. For those times when you just want to take a peep at a previous version though, it's not quite as convenient as opening it directly. My uses Nginx rather than Apache (because the machine already runs Nginx). Could that be source of the glitch, or have I perhaps misunderstood how it's supposed to work?
