Re: [BackupPC-users] Backups failing, file contents printed to screen

2023-07-20 Thread backuppc
I suggest trying to recreate this by running 'rsync' manually using as
similar options to backuppc as possible. You can see the options by
running 'ps' while backuppc is running. Also try to use the same rsync
version as backuppc is using.

This way you should be able to (mostly) rule out a problem with your
client/host machine, network, and rsync itself.

I've been watching this thread, but I haven't chimed in because I've
had no experience like yours so I can't offer you any particular gold
nugget. But I know that if that were my system I'd be able to fix it
so here's how I'd go about it. In the absence of some of the detail,
in places I'm going to have make some assumptions.

I think there are four possibilities, I'd attack them in this order:

1. A hardware problem.
2. Something caused entirely by the BackupPC config.
3. Something caused entirely by the machine being backed up.
4. Something caused by a combination of 2 and 3 above, which we can
probably leave for now. We might just have to come back to it.

The main assumption I'm making is that all these boxes are on the same
Ethernet LAN, and they're using the same switches and cabling, and you
either have great confidence in the network itself or you have already
tried swapping the cables, switches, ports, etc. with no effect so you
know that the network hardware is beyond suspicion.

Firstly, if this is a hardware box and not a VM, it could be as simple
as a broken electronic component. To find that component might not be
perfectly straightforward but it's very straightforward to replace the
hardware in its entirety. If you do that and the problem goes away it
points strongly to the hardware being the issue. In that case I'd be
looking at disecting into the major parts: PSU, RAM, motherboard, CPU
and mass storage devices, in more or less that order. If the network
device is something like a plug-in card that can be high on the list,
if for no other reason than that it's easy to swap. (As far as I'm
concerned, dodgy firmware in interface cards comes under the heading
of hardware problems.)

Secondly, you've said that you have some number of other boxes being
backed up which aren't giving this kind of trouble. The configuration
of the backup software can be *very* different for the different boxes
to be backed up, and I'd want to check that I had at least one other
box with exactly the same BackupPC configuration apart obviously from
the IP address. I'd also want to have the backups running by means of
an automatic schedule rather than starting them from the command line.

Thirdly, I'd want to check that the supporting utilities and operating
system are exactly the same on the box that's giving trouble and again
at least one that isn't. Particularly things like the versions of the
utilities which transfer the data - e.g. rsync, ssh, inetd, whatever -
and that these things are also configured in the same way, for example
you might have rsync running as a daemon on one box but running from a
super-server like xinetd on another. You might not even have the same
user running the remote utilities, so permissions might come into play.
All this might be a tall order; you might be reduced to running md5sum
on files and doing directory listings all over the place, which is one
reason it's last in this checklist.

When the checklist is exhausted we'll know a lot more.

No, I went through all of the system logs and in-memory logs for
yesterday and today and there is nothing noteworthy there.

The machine has 8Gb of memory available and we're backing up clients
larger than this one, without the same issue occurring.

When it's dumping contents to the screen, it's not stderr, but stdout. I
collected 224Gb of logs tonight before the backup aborted. (Good thing this
is a backup host with storage capacity…)

The point where it started dumping content during that first run was here:

[BackupPC-users] Backups failing, file contents printed to screen

2023-07-19 Thread David Raison

Hi backuppc users,

I have seen this before, and then it was usually rsync trying to sync
files that were currently being written (and not part of excluded files
when they should be), but this time I'm a bit at a loss and hoping for
input from the community.

On this particular host that is seeing/causing the problem, the last
successful backup was on July 12th:

2023-07-12 23:04:34 full backup 858 complete, 135774 files, 7468004132 bytes, 0
xferErrs (0 bad files, 0 bad shares, 0 other)

Since then, none of the backups, incremental or full are succeeding and
the phenomenon that I'm seeing is that, after starting a backup (using
e.g. backuppc@khoros:~$ /usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_dump -v -f
host.hypervisor.srv.1024.lu), rsync starts listing files (same, create
d, pool) and at some point, stops doing that and instead starts dumping
the content of those files to the screen. I'm assuming it might be to
stderr (I actually haven't tried piping it elsewhere yet to confirm),
but every time more content is printed, it includes the terminal bell
going off.

I know that when this happens, the backup will not succeed, so at times,
I ^C out of it, and the summary I am seeing in such a case is

Sending csums, cnt = 407327, phase = 1
Parent read EOF from child: fatal error!
Done: 0 files, 0 bytes
Got fatal error during xfer (Child exited prematurely)
Backup aborted by user signal
Not saving this as a partial backup since it has fewer files than the
prior one (got 0 and 0 files versus 9)

dump failed: Child exited prematurely
link host.hypervisor.srv.1024.lu

I have not yet been able to spot when exactly it goes from file-listing
to dumping file contents because I simply can't spend the whole day
looking at a single terminal window, but I can see that the content that
is currently being output seems to be mails. I have uploaded some
samples here (https://cloud.tentwentyfour.lu/s/ZfQXJKQc3r9ReFm) but
there isn't much to see, given that it's just mime-encoded mails and
attachments.

Nothing (rsync or other) has been upgraded on the client machine on the
12th or after and the only thing that has changed on the backuppc server
is a library for parsing JSON:

Start-Date: 2023-07-12  13:21:10
Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade -v
Upgrade: libyajl2:amd64 (2.1.0-3+deb10u1, 2.1.0-3+deb10u2)
End-Date: 2023-07-12  13:21:13

I guess I'll try to pipe the process' output to files so that I may be
able to spot when and/or where exactly the switch from listing to
dumping happens, but any ideas from your side are more than welcome.

Regards,
David

[BackupPC-users] Backups failing on Windows 7 machines

2014-05-19 Thread snowybunting
Oh, FFS. Apparently the shop where I bought the windows 7 computers had the
original login account username set as Owner, which I had changed in the User
Config control panel, but apparently that is not enough. Logging in with
Owner seems to have fixed at least the backup problems.

[BackupPC-users] Backups failing on Windows 7 machines

2014-05-19 Thread snowybunting
We have a small network of 6 machines, until recently all were running XP and
being backed up to a CentOS 5.10 box with backuppc-3.1.0. We started updating
machines to Windows 7 professional, now I'm getting NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE on
those machines. All the windows 7 machines can access shares on the linux box,
but I can't get to the win machines from linux either with backuppc or simple
smbclient commands.

[tom@linux ~]$ smbclient //tom1/documents -A .smbclient
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

Username/password are the same on windows and linux. .smbclient has windows 7
credentials. Everything was running really well for literally years until we
updated to windows 7. I've spent numerous days looking for a a solution and
have yet to find anything. Any help is appreciated.

[BackupPC-users] Backups failing

2010-01-02 Thread Steve Blackwell
I recently upgraded from F10 to F11 via preupgrade and everything
appeared to go fine but now the backups of my PC keep failing with the
following error in the log file:

Backup failed on steve (Tar exited with error 512 () status)

Info tar says there are only 3 possible exit codes; 0, 1 and 2 but that

If `tar' has invoked a subprocess and that subprocess exited with a
nonzero exit code, `tar' exits with that code as well.

My $TarClientCmd is:

/usr/bin/sudo $tarPath -c -v -f - -C $shareName --totals

Here are a couple of other pieces of info which may or may not be
relevant:
- The backups of my wife's Vista PC works OK.
- The upgrade from F10-F11 chaged the name of my backup media
  from /media/disk to /media/long UUID so I changed $TopDir
  accordingly.
- The sever is version 3.1.0.

Can anyone tell me what a 512 error is or give my any insight into the
problem?

Thanks,
Steve

That's your problem ... you can't do this.

I'd recommend putting $TopDir back to what it was and creating a symbolic
link.

Ah! I don't like having that UUID as the name of the directory anyway.
Is there a way to tell automount to call it disk instead?

[BackupPC-users] backups failing due to errors under /sys... BackupFilesExclude is not taking effect. What gives?

2008-12-08 Thread Aleksey Tsalolikhin
BackupPC 3.1.0 on CentOS 5.2

Backups of a single host are aborting after lots of errors like

sys/block/hdc/capability: md4 doesn't match: will retry in phase 1; file removed

data available (61)
sys/block/hdc/dev: md4 doesn't match: will retry in phase 1; file removed

/sys/block/hdc/queue/iosched/back_seek_max: No data available (61)
sys/block/hdc/queue/iosched/back_seek_penalty: md4 doesn't match: will
retry in phase

Always referencing files under /sys

My site-wide config.pl includes

$Conf{BackupFilesExclude} = ['/proc', '/sys'];

My error log for this host shows:

Sent exclude: /proc

Why didn't /sys get excluded, as per the configuration? There is no
overriding $Conf{BackupFilesExclude} directive in the per-host
config file.

I've got rsync 3.0.3 (protocol version 30) on both ends.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Aleksey

Re: [BackupPC-users] Backups failing with fileListReceive failed.

2008-12-02 Thread Mark Maciolek
hi,

Rsync does not want any thing to be echoed back when ssh to client from
root's .bashrc file.

as a test from the backuppc server try this
as user backuppc:

ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] ls
anaconda-ks.cfg
Desktop
install.log
install.log.syslog
mail
Mail

results should be list of files in root's home area on clientname

I added echo $PATH to root's .bashrc on clientname and now get this:

/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
anaconda-ks.cfg
Desktop
install.log
install.log.syslog
mail
Mail

this will cause rsync to fail

Just comment out any echo lines in root's .bashrc or in your case lines
that are trying to set the display.

Mark

[BackupPC-users] Backups failing

Hi,

On my personal laptop, I haven't been able to do backups for a while.
Below is an extract of the error log.

Other backups work fine, and I've repeatedly deleted and recreated the
shares on this laptop, to no avail.

Is there something else that can be done, short of nuking the laptop and
reloading it from scratch?

[BackupPC-users] Backups failing on my laptop

2008-03-31 Thread Alex Schaft
Hi all,

I posted about this a while back, about my laptop not being backed up
due to a lost network connection during backup error.

I've tried recreating the shares, swapping cables, sitting at different
desks, but I'm still at a loss as to why this is happening.

Below is an excerpt from the errors for the lasst one tried

Running: /usr/bin/smbclient alexlt\\fwall\$ -U alexs -E -N -d 1 -c tarmode\
full -Tc -
full backup started for share fwall$

Running: /usr/bin/smbclient alexlt\\devmast\$ -U alexs -E -N -d 1 -c

Running on Centos:

Linux version 2.6.9-67.0.7.ELsmp ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc
version 3.
4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-9)) #1 SMP Sat Mar 15 06:54:55 EDT 2008

And smb client samba-client-3.0.25b-1.el4_6.4

Where else can I check for what is going wrong?
