i figured it out 5 minutes ago - the inodes on the data partition (ext)
were all used up to 100% ... so this error message is a bit misleading
indeed.

 Look in the XferLOG.bad file for localhost and see what command
 was executed.

after trying to restart backuppc it told me that a hardlink test failed
and that maybe my inodes are all used.

so now i'm copying my data partition to mkfs it with more inodes...
