I cannot comment on your problems in your first email because it seems to be
hardware related. See below for some comments.

   Maximum Spool Size = 5G
   Spool Directory = /opt/backup/spool
   Backward Space Record = no
Fast Forward Space File = no
   TWO EOF = yes
 }

Judging by the error messages you got below during the btape test command, I
would try the test again with two changes:

   BSF at EOM = no
   TWO EOF = no

If that fails, try the two recommended configurations given in the manual. One

It's odd that the FD works with all other variations of the Windows

more than an adequate due diligence to show it's not a configuration
 or ACL issue.

This really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Microsoft programmers being the
superb non-compatible programmers that they are have created significant
sometimes subtle incompatible differences in the API between each different
flavor of Windows. We have lots of grotesquely complicated Windows only code
to try to handle those differences. I'm not sure that any Bacula developer
has a W2K machine, so it isn't to surprising there are problems.

Have you attempted to use the most recent FD build yet (1.38.8 I
think) on this W2K box yet?

As a work around (ugly as it might be) use NTBackup.exe or xcopy/
robocopy to do a temp dump of the files in an open directory prior to
bacula running, then cleanse the directory in an after job fashion?

Just a thought since you're stuck with the Win2K box and hope they
help you get beyond this task.

Of course not, but this is normal Windows behaviour. The Backup-API
is the way, to solve this.

  Quote from MSDN-Library:

In most cases, the ability to read and write the security settings
of a file or directory object is restricted to kernel-mode
processes. Clearly, you would not want any user process to be able
to change the ownership or access restriction on your private file
or directory. However, a backup application would not be able to
complete its job of backing up your file if the access restrictions
you have placed on your file or directory does not allow the
application's user-mode process to read it. Backup applications
must be able to override the security settings of file and
directory objects to ensure a complete backup. Similarly, if a
backup application attempts to write a backup copy of your file
over the disk-resident copy, and you explicitly deny write
privileges to the backup application process, the restore operation
cannot complete. In this case also, the backup application must be
able to override the access control settings of your file.
The SE_BACKUP_NAME and SE_RESTORE_NAME access privileges were
specifically created to provide this ability to backup
applications. If these privileges have been granted and enabled in
the access token of the backup application process, it can then
call CreateFile to open your file or directory for backup,
specifying the standard READ_CONTROL access right as the value of
the dwDesiredAccess parameter. However, to identify the calling
process as a backup process, the call to CreateFile must include
the FILE_FLAG_BACKUP_SEMANTICS flag in the dwFlagsAndAttributes
  parameter.

If I would have to guess what happens, I would say bacula is using
this privilege for reading object to backup, but not for browsing
the directory-tree. But of course usually things aren't that easy :-)

One method:

Do you locate(1) on the Linux boxes? If you don't have it enabled set it

locate+grep to find your files.

Example:

 locate /raid/samba/home/dom | grep -i .doc

This will list off all the files locate last saw and you can grep on

Just make sure you archive your old locate databases rather than

Re: [Bacula-users] case insensitive query

2006-04-19 Thread Troy Daniels
Under MySQL you can use the LCASE() (Or UCASE if you prefer) function to
do something like:

SELECT DISTINCT Job.JobId as JobId, Client.Name as Client,
  Path.Path,Filename.Name,StartTime,Level,JobFiles,JobBytes
 FROM Client,Job,File,Filename,Path WHERE Client.ClientId=Job.ClientId
 AND JobStatus='T' AND Job.JobId=File.JobId
 AND Path.PathId=File.PathId AND Filename.FilenameId=File.FilenameId
 AND LCASE(Filename.Name)='filenameinlowercase.doc'
 ORDER BY Job.StartTime LIMIT 20;

You would need to provide the filename in all lowercase to get a match.

Not sure what sort of performance hit this would cause for your query
tho - can imagine it could be pretty harsh on larger systems

FYI, The above query is straight out of /etc/bacula/query.sql on my
system and was only modified to add the LCASE function and fake filename.

Add this query to your query.sql file:

# 18 - case insensitive version of query #2
:List up to 20 places where a File is saved regardless of the directory
(case insensitive):

*Enter Filename (no path):
SELECT DISTINCT Job.JobId as JobId, Client.Name as Client,
 Path.Path,Filename.Name,StartTime,Level,JobFiles,JobBytes
FROM Client,Job,File,Filename,Path WHERE Client.ClientId=Job.ClientId
AND JobStatus='T' AND Job.JobId=File.JobId
AND Path.PathId=File.PathId AND Filename.FilenameId=File.FilenameId
AND convert(Filename.Name USING latin1)='%1'
ORDER BY Job.StartTime LIMIT 20;

Now, instead of picking query #2, pick query #18 (or whatever is the
last one on the list). It works exactly like query #2, but it's case
insensitive. I suspect you'll need at least mysql 4.0 or better for
this to work, and it's rather slow, but it should do the trick.

I've used the technique on other queries tho and just applied it to this

I completely missed the reference to the filename field being binary too

My bad! Sorry!

The *Job-overrides* permit overriding the Level, the Storage, the

what backup Job Level is in effect.

Re: [Bacula-users] case insensitive query

2006-04-19 Thread Troy Daniels

An update to this.

I cant vouch for this exact query - on my system it takes a looonnggg
time to finish due to the 2 million plus files recorded and I gave up
and canceled it, but the following simplified version worked:

mysql select Name from Filename where LCASE(Name) = 'makedev';
+-+
| Name|
+-+
| MAKEDEV |
+-+
1 row in set (1.15 sec)

So I dont understand why it wouldn't work in the other query - but I'm
not a MySQL Guru.

I am running MySQL Server 3.23.58 tho which could be the difference I
suppose.

Cheers,

Troy.

An update to my update - I ran my query against a smaller bacula db
(Only just over 700k files in this one) and after 5m 38s of waiting it
returned a case insensitive matching list of files.

Without the LCASE() function it took 1m 49s for the same query to be
performed.

So thats just over 3 times as long to complete.

Well, I don't think it was technically the reload that caused the
crash. From your original report, the last line in the log file before
the crash was about Resetting previous configuration, so it would
appear the problem is not so much in the reload command, but in bacula's

This does look like a bug, and you can report it as such (go to

Hmm... yeah, I tried that, but it didn't work for me, whereas the

mysql select Name from Filename where LCASE(Name) = 'makedev';
Empty set (1.03 sec)

mysql select Name from Filename where CONVERT(Name using latin1)='makedev';
+-+

+-+

I am using mysql 5.0.18, though, like you, I don't know why that should

Hi Jaime,

The easiest way is probably to restart the file daemon as well. I don't
think it's wise to restart bacula when it is running. The job won't
complete successfully and you will only have half a backup, for which I
don't know what it's worth.

[Bacula-users] Zombie processes in job list

2006-04-19 Thread Francisco Reyes

Had a director crash due to running out of space.
A couple of jobs were in Created state.

When I brought back the director the jobs appear on list jobs, but status
client showed there were not there anymore.

How can they be removed?
The only reason it's an issue is that they always appear at the bottom of
job list, so it makes it harder to see what job(s) are the most recent.

ServerA and ServerB are just two mail servers we are backing up.

71|ServerA|2006-04-18 23:04:44|B|F|7,464|1,000,707,982 |A|

58|ServerA||B|I|0|0|C|  == Zombie listing
59|ServerB||B|I|0|0|C|  == Zombie listing

Do I need to look for those records in he database and delete them?

Depends on your needs regarding capacity and speed, obviously.

We are about to backup somewhat about 200 GB in a full-backup-session.
Currently we are using DDS-3, which is quite old (and does not have the

Can anybody recommend good hardware for that task?

LTO-2 or -3, depending on how fast you expect your data to grow, or one

[Bacula-users] Silent install / mass deployment assistant scripts

2006-04-19 Thread Dominic Marks
Hello,

I've worked up something which I think is useful following the
discussion on bacula-devel regarding automated installing and
upgrading of Bacula on large sites with a big Windows element.

The scripts require some customisation which is the nature of these
things but I hope they are useful to others.

Once you have done the preparatory work of creating a security group
which will contain your Bacula clients, downloading the version of the
Windows FD you want to run and setting paths appropriately all you
need to do to deploy to a machine is to add it to the security group
and wait for someone with admin rights (often the user) to log in.
Upgrades are similarly easy. The new version of the installer is
downloaded, a single variable in the script is updated and from then
on upgrades will commence as systems log in.

When combined with the PHP script and a little site specific code you
can easily have it reconfigure the Director too so that both client
and server configuration is fully automated.

Contents:

 1. bacula-install-and-upgrade.vbs

From the script:
' Bacula Automatic Install Upgrade VBScript
' -
'
' This script is designed to be customised into a
' organisations domain logon script. The Bacula client
' will be conditionally installed on the presence of
' the executing computer's membership of a Bacula
' group.
'
' When a user with administrator rights logs in to a
' system on a Computer which is present in the Bacula
' group (in ActiveDirectory) the client will be
' installed or upgraded if the existing version is older.
'
' Optionally the client can be automatically configured
' with the director by querying a PHP script residing on
' a Web server (possibly on the director, but that is not
' a requirement)
'
' The PHP script is also designed to be customised into an
' organisations own systems. The supplied template just
' generates a password and a very simple bacula-fd.conf
' storing the password and computer name in a comma
' delimited file.
'
' Most organisations will want to customise this to store
' these details in a database table from which they can
' generate their bacula-dir and bacula-sd conf(s) using a
' template.
'

http://goodforbusiness.eu/~dom/bacula-install-and-upgrade.vbs

 2. fdconf.php

A minimal implementation of a script to configure the client and
possibly the server. This area is site specific however and needs to
be customised so this is just a starting point.

http://goodforbusiness.eu/~dom/fdconf.phps

Comments welcome.

Thanks,
Dominic

I cant vouch for this exact query - on my system it takes a looonnggg
time to finish due to the 2 million plus files recorded and I gave up
and canceled it, but the following simplified version worked:

mysql select Name from Filename where LCASE(Name) = 'makedev';
+-+

1 row in set (1.15 sec)

So I dont understand why it wouldn't work in the other query - but I'm
not a MySQL Guru.

I am running MySQL Server 3.23.58 tho which could be the difference I
suppose.

Hmm... yeah, I tried that, but it didn't work for me, whereas the
CONVERT() strategy does:

mysql select Name from Filename where LCASE(Name) = 'makedev';
Empty set (1.03 sec)

mysql select Name from Filename where CONVERT(Name using
latin1)='makedev';

+-+
| Name|
+-+
| MAKEDEV |
+-+
1 row in set (1.85 sec)

I am using mysql 5.0.18, though, like you, I don't know why that should
make a difference.

Thank you so much for your help on this. I've tested the suggestions
above on my system, which uses MySQL v4.1 and found that the LCASE
doesn't work but the CONVERT does work. As I am just getting into
production with bacula, my database isn't large enough yet to make any
speed conclusions. This is a great help. Thanks again.

This has been already reported as a bug, and I already have the code that will
fix the bug that was reported and possibly yours.

Should i never use the reload command on the console any more?
If i do /etc/init.d/bacula-dir restart, at least i wont have a
Segmentation violation...:(
Well, thanks anyway.

It just means the director crashed -- probably due to the errors in
your initial config. Now that you've corrected those errors, it
shouldn't happen again.

Yes, I think that does make a difference. On this page:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/charset-binary-op.html

it notes that something is different about binary column types after v4.
Not sure I understand it enough to say what the difference is though!
