[Bacula-users] delete job files from a volume

2006-08-10 Thread Marco Strullato
Hi all,
I have a question about volumes: is it possible to delete job files
from a volume (storage is a hard disk).
I mean yesterday a huge backup fails and now I have my storage full: I
tryed to delete files just from that job but I can't.

Do you have any suggestion?

Thanks

marco

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula doesn't backup to remote storage

2006-08-10 Thread Victoria
Thank You for Your suggestions, but i still have the same problems.
And heartbeat seems doesn't help to prevent such situation.

What else i should check?
I just want mentioned these problems started when i added spooling and
concurrent jobs.

Thanks.

For a start, add the 'heartbeat' directive to keep the connection
alive on the FD. This is done in the FD .conf file.

  From the Bacula manual:
 Heartbeat Interval = time-interval
This record defines an interval of time. For each heartbeat that the
 File daemon receives from the
Storage daemon, it will forward it to the Director. In addition, if no
heartbeat has been received from the Storage daemon and thus for-
warded the File daemon will send a heartbeat signal to the Director
and to the Storage daemon to keep the channels active. The default
interval is zero which disables the heartbeat. This feature is partic-
ularly useful if you have a router such as 3Com that does not follow
Internet standards and times out a valid connection after a short du-
ration despite the fact that keepalive is set.

Sounds like you've got some bad data in your catalog database. Try
using the dbcheck utility to verify this and clean out any duplicate
 or stale records.

 Thanks Frank,

I'm running dbcheck now. I don't know how long is usual for a dbcheck
 run but
it has had the cpu at 100% for about 10 hours so far. I opted to run
 all
 the checks
and its currently checking for orphaned path entries. Our MySQL
 database is

 Output so far:

Checking for Filenames with a trailing slash
 Found 0 bad Filename records.
Checking for Paths without a trailing slash
 Found 1 bad Path records.
 Checking for duplicate Filename entries.
 Found 1 duplicate Filename records.
 Checking for duplicate Path entries.
 Found 0 duplicate Path records.
 Checking for orphaned JobMedia entries.
 Found 0 orphaned JobMedia records.
Checking for orphaned File entries. This may take some time!
 Found 284456 orphaned File records.
Checking for orphaned Path entries. This may take some time!

I'll paste the rest of the output when dbcheck finishes.

Anyway, dbcheck did something bad to MySQL over night and it had to be
restarted because Bacula and the MySQL Server both stopped responding.
I'm going to dump and archive the catalogue in its broken state and
then start with a fresh one unless anyone has any great ideas? I'm
open to all suggestions - but obviously I need to get the backup
system back online ASAP.

Thanks,
Dominic

[Bacula-users] newbie to tapes question

2006-08-10 Thread Jaime Ventura
Hi,
Im having the following problem.
Im tring to do a backup job (named jtgv-gsi) using 2 tapes labeled
01L3 and 02L3(which are added in a pool named TapePoolForSERVERS).
When 01L3 go full, bacula asked me 02L3. I think it wasn't
supposed to ask me for it since I'm using an auto charger and both tapes
were in it.
As you can seen below, I do a mount and still bacula is asking me
for it. Tape 01L3 is unloaded from the drive and 02L3 is loaded
in to the drive.
Is it because 02L3 state is Recycle? Who can I force bacula to
use it?
Thank you.

As I'm fairly sure is documented in the manual, purge allows the files
to be reused. If you want to remove the volume files, you must do this

Re: [Bacula-users] Slow Backup Performance on Windows 2003.

2006-08-10 Thread Michael Morgan
I've seen similar data on my backups, but generally, only with very
small backup sizes (less than 1GB). When I back up over 1GB, the rates
increase dramatically, although backup from the Windows server is still
only about 1/2 to 1/3 the Linux server rate. Before you get too
concerned, try a bigger backup (3-5GB) and see what the performance is.
With your small backups, it is probably mostly due to the ratio of
overhead to actual data.

[Bacula-users] System crashing hard -- presumably Bacula is the culprit

2006-08-10 Thread Scott Ruckh
I have been running bacula Version: 1.38.8 (compiled from source) for a
few months now. I am running CentOS 4.3 on an x86_64 platform.

I am backing up to disk (external USB storage).

This has been running fine for the past few months.

This week the system has crashed hard (no kernel panic) 2 times. I can
not find anything of value in any of the system logs. It is a complete
hang of the system.

I am running VMware Workstation on this server. The reason I mention this
is because the only significant change to the system this week is that
more VM instances have been running on the server this week. All day long
the Virtual Machines and the physical system plays nicely with one
another. Then, within 2 minutes of seeing this bacula message Volume
INCR-0003 previously written, moving to end of data, the system hangs.
The above message is seen write after the script defined in the
RunBeforeJob (for the physical system) directive is run (and completed
successfully).

It is a presumed 2 minutes because that is the time from the above message
to the last message written to the /var/log/messages file.

I can not find any other jobs running at that time then would be any
different then the jobs running throughout the day.

Anyone have any suggestions on things I could tune that would prevent the
system from crashing? My bacula configurations are not all that complex
or strange. Anyone else seen this type of behavior?

Thanks.

On an unmodified Bacula system, dbcheck can run for days. And it
locks the database so no backups or restores can be done until it
finishes. Look in the archives for this list about adding indexes.
There are two or three indexes that can be added. These additions cut
the runtime for over two days on my SOHO system with 5 computers to a
few minutes.

Because of the speed of LTO3 media, you should always use spooling for
everything - except possibly full backups - otherwise the tape spends a
lot of time shoe-shining

What storage device are you calling in your -dir job{} entries?

There are two or three indexes that can be added.

Add these ones:

idx_jobid, for JobId in File
idx_pathid, for PathId in File
idx_filenameid for FilenameId in File

I know there's a 3-way index, but it doesn't seem to work.

The queries for orphan files, paths and filenames will run ok once this is
done (cut runtime down from 3 days to about 20 minutes for over 100
million entries)

BUT: dbcheck generates a lit of entries to delete, then attempts to do
them one at a time - this is _extremely_ slow.

  These additions cut
the runtime for over two days on my SOHO system with 5 computers to a
 few minutes.

The queries can be done manually, but you MUST have MySQL newer than 4.1.0

Checking orphan files:

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM File WHERE JobId NOT IN ( SELECT JobId FROM Job )

deleting orphan files:

DELETE FROM File WHERE JobId NOT IN ( SELECT JobId FROM Job)

Checking orphan paths:

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Path WHERE PathId NOT IN ( SELECT PathId FROM File )

Deleting orphan paths:

DELETE FROM Path WHERE PathId NOT IN ( SELECT PathId FROM File )

Checking orphaned filenames:

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Filename WHERE FilenameId NOT IN ( SELECT FilenameId
FROM File )

Deleting orphaned filenames

DELETE FROM Filename WHERE FilenameId NOT IN ( SELECT FilenameId FROM File )

These subselects are slightly slower than LEFT OUTER JOIN, however you
can't use a LEFT OUTER JOIN in a DELETE statement.

[Bacula-users] Kernel panic from Bacula recovery CDs

2006-08-10 Thread Faber J. Fedor
Hi guys,

Me and my guys have inherited a webserver running Debian 3.3.5 and
bacula doing remote backups (the webserver is a bacula client). The
previous admin left very little in the way of documentation so that is
one of our first tasks.

Along those line, we want to be able to do a bare metal restore of the
webserver to another machine. So be the good little geeks that we are,
we RTFBM and followed the procedure to create the Bacula CDs.

The problem we are experiencing is a kernel panic when booting off the
CD, the specific message is unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,1).

Now, this tells me a couple of things:

1. Bacula is trying to mount a file system from the first partition of the
first hard drive. Why? For all intents and purposes, it looks like a
pivotroot is being executed, but I checked the linuxrc script and there
is no pivotroot. I tried 'linux root=/dev/root' and got the same kernel
panic on unknown-block(0,0).

2. The Bacula CD can't find a fs module to load. While the module in
question (ext3) may not be built into the kernel, it is in the initrd
image that gets loaded. So why isn't it being found?

Any suggestions on how to get these CDs to boot?

Do you know why those indicies aren't enabled by default? What's the overhead

I am backing up to disk (external USB storage).

This has been running fine for the past few months.

This week the system has crashed hard (no kernel panic) 2 times. I can
not find anything of value in any of the system logs. It is a complete
 hang of the system.

I am running VMware Workstation on this server. The reason I mention
 this
is because the only significant change to the system this week is that
more VM instances have been running on the server this week. All day
 long
the Virtual Machines and the physical system plays nicely with one
another. Then, within 2 minutes of seeing this bacula message Volume
INCR-0003 previously written, moving to end of data, the system hangs.
The above message is seen write after the script defined in the
RunBeforeJob (for the physical system) directive is run (and completed
 successfully).

It is a presumed 2 minutes because that is the time from the above
 message
to the last message written to the /var/log/messages file.

Perhaps you can configure syslogd to send these messages to the console as
 well?

The screen is completely gone so I could not see any console messages and
this server is not connected to a console server.

I can not find any other jobs running at that time then would be any
different then the jobs running throughout the day.

Anyone have any suggestions on things I could tune that would prevent
 the
 system from crashing?

Is the USB disk for anything other than backups? If not, maybe the
 problem
the problem is USB-related. Can you do a backup to a non-USB disk?

Thanks for the feedback. I do not really have that available disk space
for backups on a non-USB device (this environment is for home office).
When I am only running 1-2 virtual machines everything works fine, or at
least has run fine in the past. The same has been true this week. Now
twice this week when 3 Virtual machines were running the system crashed
nearly at the same time (right after the RunBefore script has been
completed).

As backups seem to work when when more memory is available (less VM's
running) it does not appear to be a USB issue (at least the USB Drive).
Possibly a conflict with the USB sharing between physical machine and
virtual machine.

Also, as the only time the system crashes is at the start of the backup
process, I do not think hardware is failing. Maybe conflicting as stated
above.

Thanks for the feedback.
