Yes. You need to get the label barcodes working because you should

Actually, you shouldn't even be using label barcodes

If the tape is blank and shows in the database as never having been used

Actually, you shouldn't even be using label barcodes

If the tape is blank and shows in the database as never having been used
before, Bacula will label it automatically.

I had a second reason for recommending that. I do not believe Robin

would be a step in the right direction.

[Bacula-users] Must resource names match?

2008-02-04 Thread Ben Hyde
I have Bacula installed[1] and running, thanks.

That installation gave me some sample configuration files. I got to
writing up my notes as kind of self audit of my install and ...

I'm so confused! I assume that if the same resource is described in
two configuration files, and they both provide a name for that
resource that name should be identical. Otherwise, at minimum, the
reports created using bconsole are going to get confusing.

But the storage daemon's resource, in the examples I got when I
installed, don't follow that rule. In the director deamon's
configuration file it's named File (sic), while in the storage
deamon's configuration file it's called elm-sd.

Presumably there isn't any code to check that the names match.

That's my question? Should names attributes, if given, for a given
resource be identical across configuration files? Or is it a must?

In a related matter this text appears in the bacula-sd.conf.sample file:

...
#
# Devices supported by this Storage Daemon
# To connect, the Directiors'bacula-dir.conf must have the
# same Name and MediaType
#

Device {
   Name = FileStorage
   Media Type = File
   ...

Which leads one to think that the storage daemon on the director side
should be named after the device name. Which seems wrong.

Like I said I have it all working, and at this point I've changed the
director's config file to get rid of the storage resource called
File. I changed it to the name used in the storage daemon's config
file - since that's what feels correct to me. If somebody can point
out where these sample configuration files are in the svn browser I'd
can provide put together some patches.

Re: [Bacula-users] backup to two alternating USB disks

2008-02-04 Thread Marco Mandl

Hi all,

I still have not found a reliable solution.

Let summarize again what I want tho achieve:
- 3 generations backup on USB disk
- change the USB disk from time to time

So I defined the 3 pools for each generation and labeled the a separated set
of media on 2 disks:
disk1: d1foof1, d1foof2, d1food1, d1food2, d1food3, d1food4, d1fooi1,
d1fooi2
disk2: d2foof1, d2foof2, d2food1, d2food2, d2food3, d2food4, d2fooi1,
d2fooi2

Each disk works fine for itself. But if I swap the disks bacule creates the
volumes of the removed disk for the next backups.

The file device is defined with removeable-media=yes. I tried update pool.

I do not want to disable and enable all volumes one by one manually. How
could I do it in a bunch? Is there an example of a script?

But most propably it is simply a question of configuration. Please give me a
hint.

It would be perfect if after a disk change bacula would use the media
available on the new disk and start with a full backup.

Regards,
Marco

To give you some background, actually I make backups of two machines to a
corresponding local USB disk. I think of swapping these USB disks from
time to time to have remote backups of both machines. The backup data
should be on different encrypted partitions.

 No problems there, I think.

I see the following problem. Each instance of bacula has its own database
about pools and media. Changing the files which represent these
backup media by swapping the whole disk does not change baculas
 information.

Which is why, for tapes in autochangers, there is the update slots
 command.

In other words, Bacula can handle such a situation.

So bacula may e.g. reuse that media which may actually be the
newest on that disk or append to a media which was used months ago.

You let Bacula handle all the volumes, simply and the catalog will have
data about all media, the ones available and the ones not available
 currently.

 I see two approaches:

 1. Have a batch job recognize the change and have bacula import the
physical media and their states. Problem: I have no idea how I can
 achieve
 that.

Rather simple, and that's what i'd do with 1.38 and below:

Set all volumes of state Used, Recycled, Purged or Append in the
catalog to a state of Disabled when removing a disk. Keep the old
 volume state on that disk.

When re-connecting such a disk, undo these changes. Should be possible
to do this by script, triggered by plugging in th disk, managed by HAL
or udev or whatever you use.

 2. Just configure bacula to have its database on the USB disk, too. Does
that work? Can I just swap the disks with database of a running
bacula-director on it and after restarting bacula-director it will work
 on
 as expected?

That might work, but you will never have information about backups on
the other media. I would not suggest such a setup.

I hope I could interest you for that challenge and would very much
 appreciate any hint.

The solution might be to upgrade to the upcoming version. AFAIK there's
improved support for removable hard disks implemented - just what you
 need.

You'll have to read the ReleaseNotes and the manual carefully, because
the upgrade process itself requires a catalog upgrade (easily done,
usually) and the new functions are yet unknown to me.

 Arno

 Thanks,
 Marco

Re: [Bacula-users] backup to two alternating USB disks

2008-02-04 Thread Dan Langille

On Mon, February 4, 2008 7:28 am, Marco Mandl wrote:

 Hi all,

I still have not found a reliable solution.

Let summarize again what I want tho achieve:
 - 3 generations backup on USB disk
 - change the USB disk from time to time

So I defined the 3 pools for each generation and labeled the a separated
 set
 of media on 2 disks:
 disk1: d1foof1, d1foof2, d1food1, d1food2, d1food3, d1food4, d1fooi1,
 d1fooi2
 disk2: d2foof1, d2foof2, d2food1, d2food2, d2food3, d2food4, d2fooi1,
 d2fooi2

Each disk works fine for itself. But if I swap the disks bacule creates
 the
volumes of the removed disk for the next backups.

The file device is defined with removeable-media=yes. I tried update
 pool.

I do not want to disable and enable all volumes one by one manually. How
could I do it in a bunch? Is there an example of a script?

But most propably it is simply a question of configuration. Please give me
 a
 hint.

It would be perfect if after a disk change bacula would use the media
available on the new disk and start with a full backup.

I suggest a simple approach.

Use local HDD as your primary backup storage. Use USB only as a backup of
your backup. Do not backup directory to USB. Backup to local HDD, then
use a tool such as rsync to duplicate your backups onto the USB drives.

Under normal situations, always use the local HDD for backups and
restores. Use the USB for restores *only* if your local HDD has serious
problems.

Suggestion: use RAID-1 on the local HDD.

It's not so much a bug, as it is a bconsole quirk. It simply defaults to
overwrite mode instead of insert mode. Hit the 'insert' key to switch modes,
and it'll behave as you expect.

Now, I could almost agree with that, but since when does overwrite mode
mean that backspace/delete doesn't actually delete a character?

Just tested it on my install (Bacula 2.2.8 on Debian) and I got the same
thing. Typed 'status' then backspaced all over it, hit enter and the
 status prompt came up.

This does not happen under Bacula 2.2.8 on FreeBSD.

Sounds to me like this is a not a Bacula-specific issue, but rather
something introduced by the packaging.

I have seen this on multiple platforms, though I could not tell you which
at this second. I suspect Linux and Solaris.

This host is running the 2.4.21-40.ELsmp kernel, and does have /lib/tls.
The start scipt seems to take this into account. I was wondering if this
was the reason for seeing a main process and child processes.

My guess is that this is an old system with the LinuxThreads threading
library, so what you're seeing are in fact just 3 threads within the
 same bacula-fd process.

However, I also seem to recall that RHEL3 was one of the first
distributions which came with NPTL installed...

Yes, but the Bacula init scripts turn NPTL off for 2.4 kernels because it is
too broken to use.

It would be very simple if bacula would recognize which volumes are

there something else to configure.

Autochanger fully working with bardcode support and large linux backup
 successfully performed. Thanks all :)

Now attempting to set a fileset for an entire win32 share (R:\)

 FileSet {
   Name = hoover_data
   Enable VSS = yes
   Include {
 Options {
   signature = MD5
 }
 File = R:/
   }
 }

But no data is getting picked up. I surmise the file statement is
 incorrect ?

Impatient human at fault. disregard

Re: [Bacula-users] backup to two alternating USB disks

 Hi all,

I still have not found a reliable solution.

Let summarize again what I want tho achieve:
 - 3 generations backup on USB disk
 - change the USB disk from time to time

So I defined the 3 pools for each generation and labeled the a
 separated set
 of media on 2 disks:
 disk1: d1foof1, d1foof2, d1food1, d1food2, d1food3, d1food4, d1fooi1,
 d1fooi2
 disk2: d2foof1, d2foof2, d2food1, d2food2, d2food3, d2food4, d2fooi1,
 d2fooi2
I do this. I have disks Backup1 and Backup2, mounting as
 /media/Backup1 and /media/Backup2. On Backup1 I have pools Monthly1
 and Daily1, on Backup2 I have pools Monthly2 and Daily2. Each
job includes a check for the existence of the appropriate backup
directory using runBeforeJob. If the check fails then the job aborts.

Please forward this to the bacula-users as for some reason my posts
never appear there (I suspect a spam filter).

 Paul.

Paul,

Thank you for your suggestion.

I assume that you run Daily1 and Daily2 every day. So you have one
failed backup every day and it is difficult to be alerted when really
something goes wrong.

Regards,
Marco

Re: [Bacula-users] slightly annoying bug in the console

2008-02-04 Thread Flavio Junior
Well... a workaround that i use with it is, instead of backspace I use
shift+backspace ..

This also works when console unrecognize backspace and put a ^] at screen...

But, I thought it isnt a bacula bug, just a miss config at your
terminal (termcap/terminfo, term environment... )

Hope could be useful..

I'm not sure if this is just something peculiar to my configuration, but
in the text console for bacula, if I type a command then backspace over

This also happens with the 2.2.8 version built from the src.rpm on
sourceforge on a CentOS 4.6 system.

Just a guess, but is R: a real disk partition (since you called it share)
or is it something user-spesific stuff that wouldn't be valid for the bacula
client that runs as a system service?
