Correct I see what is causing this problem. I only need to code a workaround
and test it so that will take some time to do it right. As I expected
the current
extended attribute code is sufficient perform the backup and restore no
need to implement yet an other interface.

I installed a Fedora 16 VM and can now test on that.

I backup to permanently attached USB disk (3 weeks retention of weekly full +

the permanently attached disks has just failed. Is there a shortcut to tell
Bacula to purge all volumes on that disk (they aren't coming back), prompting
it to just do a full backup next time the jobs run?

My fallback is to just create a shell script based on a query result but
maybe there's another trick someone knows?

You said that the physical volume is dead, so the bacula media files

Our director/storage run on a Linux box with bacula version 5.2.3
On the AIX machines we upgraded this week also to bacula 5.2.3.
Previously we did not see this message but that was probably because those
AIX machines previously ran bacula 3.0.2 and that version/build did not
support AIX acl's.

I don't see any problem with the aclget command on /smit.log (backed up
from the same filesystem without warning) and /.odbc.ini (causing a
warning):

# aclget /smit.log
*
* ACL_type   AIXC
*
attributes:
base permissions
owner(root): rw-
group(system): r--
others: r--
extended permissions
disabled

# aclget /.odbc.ini
*
* ACL_type   AIXC
*
attributes:
base permissions
owner(root): rw-
group(system): r--
others: r--
extended permissions
disabled

Should i worry about these messages ?
And how can i get rid of them (other then disabling acl support in the
build or configuration files) ?

Kind regards,
Michaël Devogelaere

A device can only handle one volume at a time. You can configure another
device on the SD pointing to the same Archive Device to use more than one
volume at a time.

Read about copy jobs [1].
To make them run after normal backup jobs you have to assign your copy jobs
lower priority.
Both storage devices (tape drive and NAS) have to be managed by the same
storage daemon (SD) for the copy jobs to be able to work.

Bacula is not designed for that kind of backup plan.

I see two ways of forcing it to do that anyway:

a) create a separate pool for every weekday containing just
the single tape for that day, and put into your schedule a
separate Run entry for each weekday requesting the
corresponding pool for that day

b) set the Volume Use Duration of the daily tapes lower than
a day, forcing Bacula to use a different tape every day, and
take care of mounting the correct tape manually every day

But if you do not have a special reason for doing it that way,
it would probably be better to play along with Bacula's design,
that is, use every tape until it is full and then continue with
the next one in the pool.

You are obviously running a version of bscan compiled for PostgresQL.
Use a version of bscan built with MySQL support instead.

For example, if you installed Bacula from rpm packages, install
the bacula-storage-mysql package instead of bacula-storage-postgresql.

Ok interesting, could you run a truss on your bacula-fd so
I can see what aclx_get returns. The code currently only checks for
ENOENT but as it seems you get an other error. The error printing is
also kind of bogus so if you show me error number I can add an extra
check and ignore those errors as it seems on non existing acls
you get an other errno then I expected. Most of the stuff is written
using the man-page so sometimes we need to fine tune the code somewhat
when it gets out into the wild.

[Bacula-users] Disk backup strategy advice / help

2012-01-04 Thread keith
I have Bacula 5.2.3 up and running and need some advice with the following

I used this tutorial
http://bacula.org/fr/dev-manual/Automated_Disk_Backup.html as a starting
point and it's working well and I have backups appearing as follows...

460M Dec 29 23:19 Full-0001
26.3G Dec 30 23:52 Full-0003

702MDec 24 23:05 Inc-0001
10.0GDec 30 01:54 Inc-0002
2.3G Dec 31 00:06 Inc-0004
3.1G Dec 31 00:56 Inc-0005
611MDec 31 00:56 Inc-0006

Now that the backups seems to be working I need to figure out how to
implement an offsite strategy, I want to use a combination of removable
disks and rsync to do this.

I want to use removable disks to take a backup offsite either
weekly or forthnightly. (Just copy that most recent Full- file to
the removable disk)
I would like to rsync the daily INC Weekly Diff backups offsite
if possible (100MB Link).

My plan is that for complete recovery I will use a combination of the
full backup that i will get from the Removable disks and the Rsync'd INC
/ Diff

If I add a new server to be backed up to Bacula midweek it does a full
backup in the INC pool. This might be a big backup and screw-up my Rsync
job.

Does this seem like a good idea and goes anyone know how keep Full
backups out of the INC or DIFF pool

Thanks
Keith

[Bacula-users] RHEL 4/5/6 - Fedora 16 Bacula RPM repository

2012-01-04 Thread Simone Caronni
Hello,

I'm in the process of updating the repository with the latest changes from
rawhide.

Apart from small tweaks and updates I do _NOT_ plan to make any additional
change to the repository in the immediate future; so this could be a safe
upgrade for Enterprise distributions.

The repository is at:

http://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/slaanesh/bacula/

The main difference from before are the following items:

- RHEL 4 support (i386/x86_64/ppc).
- Addition of README.fedora in bacula-common with quick install
procedures for PostgreSQL and notes.
- Removal of bacula-director-backend package in favour of a unified
bacula-director package
- The libbaccats alternatives are set up inside the bacula-libs package
so bscan can reside in the bacula-storage package.

Please read the README file:
http://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/slaanesh/bacula/README.txt

bacula-common package README:
/usr/share/doc/bacula-common-5.2.3/README.Fedora

git repository:

Fedora rawhide packages:

As before, I'm available for any questions or complaint about the packaging.

[Bacula-users] Per device Maximum Concurrent Jobs

2012-01-04 Thread Josh Fisher
I'm having a bit of trouble understanding what is causing the below two
jobs to fail. Job 25915 is a virtual full backup, job 25919 is a normal
full backup. Both jobs are writing to a two drive autochanger. The
virtual full job is writing to drive 0 and reading from drive 1. The
normal full wants to write to drive 1, but since drive 1 is in use when
it starts it blocks waiting for the drive to become available. That is
as I would expect, but when the the virtual full unloads drive 1 to load
the next needed volume, the normal full job wakes up and decides to load
drive 1 with the volume it wants to use at the same time the virtual
full job is loading its next tape. This I do not expect, particularly
since the two drives both have MaximumConcurrentJobs = 1 in
bacula-sd.conf. Am I missing something, or is this a potential race
condition bug?

      Storage:      Differential (/backup/differential)
      Pool:         Disk_Full
      Media type:   File

The file labeled Incr0169, lives in /backup/Incremental. If I
copy or symlink the file's around the backup works. I'm not sure
what is going on, but how can I fix it so I dont have to symlink
or move files around when I'm doing a restore.

The big problem is a single Job can not switch storage devices
(unless there was some change in bacula that I have not seen yet.).

  John

That would be an issue. But the job also switched from my Tape
library to the Differentials with out an issue.

I guess they fixed that then sorry for the noise. I will have to check
 into the release notes..

At least for tape to File moves. Also my Tape Library is on a different
system from my differential/incremental pools. That could be why it
worked.

Re: [Bacula-users] Disk backup strategy advice / help

Is the 10G on 24th mostly additional, changed or moved data? Are these
compressed backups?

Now that the backups seems to be working I need to figure out how to
implement an offsite strategy, I want to use a combination of removable
disks and rsync to do this.

I think bacula is not the ideal tool for running additional offsite
backups. And very likely rsync is not a good way if you use bacula.

I have 3 possibilities in mind:

1. If you are not talking about windows clients, I'd consider using rsync
(e.g. via rsnapshot) to run the complete offsite backup unrelated to
bacula. Run one rsync/rsnapshot job per client and the 'new' client will
just run longer, independent of the others except the shared bandwidth.
Via rsnapshot you only need to do 1 full backup per client, changed
files just lead to new full backupsets, but only the difference needs
to be transferred. We do that on several locations and wrote a wrapper
round rsnapshot (which is a wrapper round rsync), debian packages are
available at
deb http://ftp.lihas.de/debian stable main
package rsnapshot-backup.
If you add some file unification tool, you get away with far less used
diskspace.
+ only changes need to be transferred
+ initial backup can easily be transferred on external media to save bandwidth
- no bacula, no bacula indexes
- no backup of windows clients / anything that doesn't have rsync

2. Alternatively you can use the normal bacula backup + a copy job.
As copy jobs only work on same bacula-sd, you could e.g. NFS-mount some
external server and store the target pools there. The copy full pool is
to local disks on individual mountpoints. Move the volumes to the remote
location and replace it with links to remote NFS.
+ works with all clients
- regularily transporting volumes offsite is required

3. Run a complete seperate job instance to the remote site using a
bacula-sd installed there. Use virtual full backups to create the fulls
from the full/diff/inc backups. Initially a full backup has to pass the
remote connection.
+ works with all clients
0 initial full might be expensive in bandwidth

Currently I use 1. and 2. myself. With 3. I ran into trouble selecting
the correct pools in my environment and virtual full in general
including a tape changer with a single drive.

If I add a new server to be backed up to Bacula midweek it does a full
backup in the INC pool. This might be a big backup and screw-up my Rsync
 job.
Does this seem like a good idea and goes anyone know how keep Full
backups out of the INC or DIFF pool

Just do a manual initial full backup on the new client. As I assume they
don't appear magically in your backup setup.

Regards,
Adrian
