Doing a netstat -an on the director machine I can still see port 9102
and I can see that clients are connected.
I can telnet to the director on port 9102 for a remote machine and get a

I've looked through the logs in /var/bacula/working/ but can't see
 anything wrong.

The Storage daemon is on another server and seems ok.
We use file based backups, By doing a df -h I can see that the backups
stop as the backup files stop increasing.

Doing just a bacula stop / bacula start and we can connect to the

Our Bacula install was working quite well until last week.

Until a week ago we were using Bacula 5.2.3

Last week we upgrade the director to 5.2.9. The catalog was already at
the latest version (I think V13)

I realised that LZO compression only works on unix clients Doh!!! Gzip
is now enabled on our Windows servers (The manual doesn't make that very
 clear)

I was trying to get data encription to work and managed ! WooHoo but
have disabled it on my test client until this issues is resolved.

I realized that the director and storage daemon should be on that version.

Upgraded Bacula and Storage to 5.2.10

We have two Schedules A B
It seems like there's an issue with something on Schedule A. (
Currently I am eliminating clients form schedule-A and trying it to do a

I need to make sure that a given baucla file daemon is unable to do a

Is there a way to do that by configuration option or if there's not, could
you point an easy way to modify the bacula-fd source and disable the FD

Thanks

[Bacula-users] Bacula MTX Tape Autochanger does not work

2012-07-05 Thread comport3
That's a good suggestion - thank Gary.

I've located the mtx package, and have tried two versions: mtx_1.3.12-4_amd64
and mtx_1.3.12-3_amd64. The actual binary is in /usr/sbin/mtx and was installed
by the Debian Aptitude package manager.

When I tried editing this in nano, it appears as if it's not a shell script but
rather a compiled executable file - and I can't for the life of me work out
what arguments to pass, or variables to change to increase the timeout value.

Any thoughts?

That depends and sounds a little contradictory.

If one job must finish before another starts, you should use lower
priorities (higher numbers) for the later jobs as you already tried.

If the jobs should only _start_ in a specific order, no matter when they
finish you could just set them to different starting minutes (1:00h,
1:01h, 1:02h, etc) with the same priority. IMHO that's a very vague
concept and it doesn't scale.

But perhaps I misunderstood your requirements?

We have also set Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 8 but this will

Well, I guess there's a good reason for this: Having maximum control
over when which job runs through priorities,

Oops! I meant the mtx-changer script! Sorry.

Also, if you can, build the mtx binary yourself, from the source at

I know I'm paranoid, but sometimes just removing any enhancements that

So, should I set schedule time for this job one minute less than

Yes that's what we do here too in our setup for long-running jobs. This
way, they just run parallel to the others.

Perhaps you should use data-spooling for parallel running jobs. See the
documentation for Maximum Concurrent Jobs in the director resource.

Yeah, your btape results look better than mine, so I guess there's some
hardware bottleneck here.

Do you have any non-default values set for your tape drive (block sizes,
max file sizes, etc.) which could have an influence on the btape test?

Interesting though that you also get no more than 85 MB/s on real
backups. Are your 85 MB/s the despooling rate or the total backup rate?

No special settings just the dfaults.

Interesting though that you also get no more than 85 MB/s on real
backups. Are your 85 MB/s the despooling rate or the total backup rate?

It's the despooling rate.

For this example backup (a file server) bacula wrote 1.9 TByte of data to the
first tape, so compression seems to work.

Doing a netstat -an on the director machine I can still see port 9102
and I can see that clients are connected.
I can telnet to the director on port 9102 for a remote machine and get a
 response.

I've looked through the logs in /var/bacula/working/ but can't see
 anything wrong.

The Storage daemon is on another server and seems ok.
We use file based backups, By doing a df -h I can see that the backups
stop as the backup files stop increasing.

Doing just a bacula stop / bacula start and we can connect to the
 director again.

Our Bacula install was working quite well until last week.
Unfortunately I've changed loads since then and It's only since last
weekends full backups failed that I've realized that there's something
 not quite right.

 RECENT HISTORY...

Thanks for the reply, it seems like it's actually the version of Bacula
that's the problem. I rolled back to 5.2.3 and Bacula started to work
again and then upgraded to 5.2.6 and it carried on working. I'm away for
the next week and will do some more investigation as to what the problem
is when I return.

The Director is running on a OpenBSD 5.1 x64 virtual server and I think
it might be the OS that's the problem but I don't have the time to test
just now.

You may have to play with increasing the block sizes. The default of

[Bacula-users] bacula jobs use volumes from the wrong pool - bug?

2012-07-05 Thread Stephen Thompson

Hello,

Running 5.2.9, though I believe we've seen this sporadically in earlier
versions. Jobs are using volumes that are in pools to which they have
not been assigned.

This is likely a bug as I don't see anything peculiar about our
configuration. We are using a tape library with 2 drives, both set to
autoselect. The library contains volumes that are properly assigned
(i.e. database entries for volumes look fine) to various pools,
including a Full pool and an Incremental pool.

Twice in the past week, Full jobs which specify the use of the Full pool
using jobdefs are using volumes from the Incremental pool. I haven't
narrowed down all the details, but I believe it's if the Incremental
volume is already loaded in a drive when the Full job in question is
launched.

Example:

Hello again,

Here's something even stranger... Another Full job logs that it's
written to a volume in the Full pool (FB0956), but then the status
output of the job lists a volume in the Incremental pool (IM0093). This
Incremental volume was never even mentioned in the log as a volume to
which the job despooled.

 Hello,

This is likely a bug as I don't see anything peculiar about our
configuration. We are using a tape library with 2 drives, both set to
autoselect. The library contains volumes that are properly assigned
(i.e. database entries for volumes look fine) to various pools,
including a Full pool and an Incremental pool.

Twice in the past week, Full jobs which specify the use of the Full pool
using jobdefs are using volumes from the Incremental pool. I haven't
narrowed down all the details, but I believe it's if the Incremental
volume is already loaded in a drive when the Full job in question is

[Bacula-users] Debian Squeeze (6, current) to Wheezy (7, testing) broke mtx

2012-07-05 Thread comport3
Hi All,

Performing a test upgrade of our Debian Squeeze server to the new Wheezy

however under Wheezy there is only /dev/sch0.

Yes, I raised that Debian bug/wish-list item:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=657948

I have just held my udev package at the version that isn't broken (Debian
package version 172-1).
But for a fresh install that wouldn't be an option.

The change removed the following lines from /lib/udev/rules.d/80-drivers.rules

SUBSYSTEM==scsi, ENV{DEVTYPE}==scsi_device, TEST!=[module/sg], \
RUN+=/sbin/modprobe -b sg

You you probably put that rule into your own local file underneath the
/etc/udev/rule.d/ directory.
Failing that, manually running '/sbin/modprobe -b sg' at the right time would
probably also do the trick.

Regards,

[Bacula-users] Bacula MTX Tape Autochanger does not work

2012-07-05 Thread comport3
Thanks again Gary - I am reluctant to run the mtx-changer script included in
Bacula just yet, as this usually hangs and results in having to restart the
tape library, the bacula server, or both.

I have compiled mtx from source, and replaced the Debian packages version -
however, I'll have to wait until early next week to try it, as the recent
Wheezy (including Linux Kernel 3.0.2) upgrade has removed the /dev/sg* devices
from the server!!

(surely it wasn't meant to be this difficult...?)
