It’s been an interesting few days with my bacula system.

Also asked along the way was where I got the suggestions for my configuration
attempts, and one of the pages I used for reference was:
http://www.bacula.org/5.2.x-manuals/en/problems/problems/Testing_Your_Tape_Drive.html

I think I started with a configuration (an incorrect one) and after a btape
test succeeded I tried a backup, which failed. After that failure I’d change
the bacula-sd.conf, re-run btape test, then run a multi-tape btape fill test.
Which would always fail. I was going nuts trying to get it to work and wasting
many hours per iteration

[Bacula-users] Director will not connect to a remote client

So I made sure that everything was running and it still didn't work. Then, I
tried to ping the machines and it turns out that the server can ping the
clients but not the other way around. I have no idea why that is the case

What kind of changer have you got, and is the robot accessed via a
bridge from one of the drives or directly/via an external bridge?

I ask because I have a Quantum i500 and if a bad (*) tape is loaded into
the drive which is the bridge into the changer, both of them will drop
off the SAS/FC bus. (The changer logs a critical drive error, visible in
its GUI)

(*) Either very dirty, damaged or has tagged itself as "end of life,
read only"

The fix is to login to the Changer's GUI, go into diagnostics and "drive
reset"

The (better) fix is not to load in dirty tapes, which is easier said
than done.

I'm looking at buying a MPTapes.com LTO tape cleaner and LTO health
checker but this is a $6-7000 option. I can justify it because we have
over 1000 LTO5s onsite and replacing them is not practical.

[Bacula-users] FD error during copy job

2016-03-04 Thread Andrea Venturoli
Hello.

After some suggestions here on the list, I'm trying out copy jobs.

I assembled a query which selects from most recent Full, Differential
and Incrementals and copies them from a NAS (running Bacula-SD) to a
Tape (on the local SD).

While it has worked the first time, it gives an error now: what
surprises me is that the error mentions the File Daemon (see below for
the full log).
IIUC, the FD should have nothing to do with a copy job...
Any hint on why this appears?

Also, in director (but not in the mail) I also see:
> 04-Mar 13:20 backup-xxx-fd JobId 1348: End of Volume at file 32 on device
> "Backup" (/i-data/209ad83a/bacula/backup), Volume "Full0133"
> 04-Mar 13:20 backup-xxx-fd JobId 1348: End of all volumes.
> 04-Mar 13:20 backup-xxx-fd JobId 1348: Elapsed time=15:07:17, Transfer
> rate=2.577 M Bytes/second

Some notes:
_ the version is 7.2.0 on FreeBSD 9.3;
_ all devices are on the same LAN and work perfectly for non-copy jobs;
_ AFAICT there have been no network outages (and it would be a very
strange coincidence of them to always happen at the end of a NAS Volume);
_ the NAS is a Zyxel NSA;
_ there is no FD running in the NAS (does that backup-xxx-fd mean sd?).

  bye & Thanks
av.

Hello,

It seems you are having hardware problems with your tape library. Are you
receiving warning or critical alerts (TL operartor panel, TL web interface
or TapeAlert messages)?

Best regards,
