Re: [Bacula-users] Restore Problem

2006-06-04 Thread Ambahunen Gebremariam
If you don't have enough space on your restoration device, some files or folders could be skipped. However, I don't have enough info to make that conclusion. Do you have the log file for your restore job? You should get an e-mail if you had Bacula set up to e-mail you too.
Check your append parameter from the message resource of your Bacula director configuration file to find the location of your log file. Can you post the log file generated from the restore job?

Hi,I recently studied the Pool/Volumes section in the manual, but I didn'tfind a hint about which algorithm is running when bacula has to choosea tape from a pool for an actual job.Example (or my actual problem, you know ;-)
- the system is an autochanger with barcode, 60 slotsand 2 LTO-3 drives,Bacula version 1.38.7, running well with dozends of clients, in principle- there's a new pool with two freshly labeled, empty tapes
- two jobs are scheduled at the same time, doing full backup in that poolthe jobs have same priority et. al., only the client names differ- the first tape is loaded into drive 0, the first job completes
successfully. The tape remains in the drive, with some 100 MBs writtenout and state Append- then, the second job unloads the tape, loads the other one in the samedrive and writes to _that_ tape. Why?The first tape was OK and loaded!
- finally I have both new tapes written, and will get some problems infuture, because I want the two tapes used alternately using automaticvolume retention and recycling. The parallel initial time stamp on the
tapes will be confusing.I'm wondering if there's a clear algorithm in Bacula which decides tochoose some tape.I've got some more pools with similar configuration, and there, the tapes are (until today) used one after aneother.

[Bacula-users] Thinking like Bacula (Help) Volume Retaintion + Maximum Volume Job

2006-05-08 Thread Ambahunen Gebremariam
SYSTEM SUMMARY:Redhat 7.3, Bacula 1.32 (planning on upgrading), Backing up to a file PROBLEM:
I am afraid that we do not have full restorable backup from the day
full backup expires to the next full backup, which is for 4 days.HYPOTHESIS: For all my backup jobs, Volume Retaintion is set to 10 days in the pool resource. I understand that after the tenth day, backup is pruned from the catalog and it is labeled purged. In my case, for example, a full backup job (#1-Full) runs on the 1st Friday of the month. Since
Maximum Volume Job is set to one (1) in the pool resource, when the differential backup job (#2-Diff) runs on the second Friday of the month, it is backedup into a different volume than the volume used for backup #1-Full. So far so good, right?
According to my understanding, the Monday right after the #2-Diff backup job, #1-Full backup job expires and it is purged from the catalog. So from that Monday until the next full backup job (#3-Full) on the third Friday of the month, there is no restorable full backup.
QUESTION (Is my hypothesis correct?):1) Is the differential backup (#2-diff) written to a different volume from the Full backup (#1-Full) volume?2) Is the full backup (#1-Full) preserved because of the differential backup job (#2-diff) until the differential backup (#2-diff) expires?
MY PLAN:- Upgrade Bacula to the newest version- Dedicate a storage If my Hypothesis is correct, I am planning on doing the following:- Extend my volume retaintion period- Modify my backup schedule
Am I thinking like Bacula? Ambex

Updating to version 1.38 is my next step. I will have to create a project
plan and get it approved for that. Now would be a good time to go to a separate machine for backups.I'd advise increasing your retention time to something saner too.3 months is a good starting point. Tape is cheap.
Yes, current retention period is too short. I will present that to the team tomorrow as well.

[Bacula-users] Clarification in volume creation and utilization (Help)

2006-05-02 Thread Ambahunen Gebremariam
I am new to Bacula and to this mailing list. I have been reading people's questions and answers for the last two days and I am encouraged by the activity of this mailing list. I hope to come an active participant! I am currently half way through reading the manaul, but I am running out of time.
ENVIRONMENT:- We own 18 RedHat 7.3 Linux servers, all backing up each other- We use Bacula Version 1.32 for backup jobsQUESTIONS:1) Because of my Pool Resouce Schedule Resource configuration, I know I am required to have at least 2 pools. Why do I have the 3rd one? (Please see partial result of MEDIA LIST and CONFIGURATION FILE below)
2) On this particular client (CT), I have only 17GB of data in my FileSet to backup. But my volumes indicate that I have a total of 39GB of data in my backup. Why is that? Is my differential backup being promoted to full backup?
3) Can you please explain to me the difference between the volume statuses: Used, Append, purged, Recycled ...? 4) What is the proper way of deleting a file volume and what is the consequence?MEDIA LIST (partial):
CT-poolVolumeName VolStatus VolBytes LastWrittenCT3 Used 13 GB 2006-04-14 01:28:52CT2 Append 18 GB 2006-04-21 01:37:00

Run = Differential 2nd friday at 1:05 Run = Full 3rd friday at 1:05 Run = Differential 4th friday at 1:05 Run = Differential 5th friday at 1:05}Below this ... it is ONLY a further explanation of my situiation
BACKGROUND:I started this job a month ago and was given the responsiblity of backup (bacula) about a week ago. Since then I have been trying to learn bacula and understand the mess we are in. The people who installed and configured Bacula are not here anymore. The worst part is that they did not have any documentation. Now we are having disk space problems and no one in the team knows where to start to resolve the issues. Oh yea ... did I mention no one has tried restoration before?
MY BIGGEST ISSUE:Time! I have to understand the backup environment and present it to the team the coming Thursday Morning .THE GOOD NEWS:I hope I will have answers for most of their questions :)
Wish me luck,AmbexPS: Sorry for making my first one too long.
