[Bacula-users] Backup of remote PC hangs but no error message
Thanks @Jeremy and @Andre Turns out I had to set the SDAddress property in the bacula-sd config elf-definition to the actual address of the server. If left undefined it binds to the first available IP address, which is presumably localhost. Also needs the actual address to be specified for the SLR7 tape device in the bacula-dir config Storage section. An unrelated question, but one which naturally occurs now...as the laptop will obviously be disconnected at some times, how can I stop the job running if the remote client isn't connected? Otherwise the job will sit there indefinitely and block anything afterwards. Ideally I want it to wait a pre-defined timeout (e.g. 2 mins) and then give up until next scheduled time. [Bacula-users] Backup of remote PC hangs but no error message
I have got Bacula happily backing up /home directories, MySQL databases (MythTV DB) and the Bacula catalog itself on our main PC to SLR7 tape. I now want to backup /home directories on a laptop on our home LAN as well. I have installed and configured bacula-fd on the laptop. The laptop firewall has Bacula Client (port 9102) open and the main PC has ports 9101-3 open. I can see remote client status fine in Bacula console. I have created a remote backup job - the bootstrap .bsr file exists and has correct ownership and permissions. When I run the job it starts but nothing happens on either the remote laptop or the main PC (where the Bacula Director and backup storage devices are). There is no sign of any disk or network activity on either system, and no error messages in syslog or other log files, or in the Bacula log. The job just sits there with Job Bytes at zero, with nothing happening but no sign of any error message. Same happens with backup to file, so not related to the tape device. The remote laptop fileset is defined in the Director config - the file paths don't specify host, so I assume they are interpreted in the context of the remote bacula-fd. Is this correct? Anyone have any ideas what I should do / check? I am sure it is something very obvious... [Bacula-users] MTFSF error positioning tape following reboot
I thought I had fixed this by upgrading to Bacula 5 (as part of Fedora 13 upgrade) and reverting bacula-sd.conf settings to defaults. I can perform reboots, stop restart bacula-sd, and Bacula is able to append. However the other day the system locked up (due to an unrelated issue) I had to reboot the hard way with the power switch. After that I am back to MTEOM tape positioning errors:- 08-Jul 01#58;06 bacula-sd JobId 315#58; Error#58; Unable to position to end of data on device SLR7 #40;/dev/nst0#41;#58; ERR=dev.c#58;956 ioctl MT EOM error on SLR7 #40;/dev/nst0#41;. If I try to position at the end of this tape I get an I/O error:- #91;r...@localhost dev#93;# mt -f /dev/nst0 eod /dev/nst0#58; Input/output error But if I use the previous week's tape, which did not have any errors, mt -f /dev/nst0 eod successfully positions the tape. It looks as if Bacula writes the EOM marker when it is shut down nicely, not when it completes the backup job; if it is shut down brutally it doesn't get written and so the end of the medium can't be found. Is this how Bacula really works? If it is, how can I get round it, or is it a bug? Bacula version is 3.0.3. OS is Fedora 12 (kernel 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.x86_64). I have seen numerous postings about this on this forum elsewhere - one post here had recommended settings which seemed to fix the problem for a few days before it resumed. I have tried numerous combinations of driver and Bacula settings but always get this error (or a similar one with MTEOF). It seems the tape is either writing a marker it shouldn't, or *not* writing something it should, when the system is rebooted. How do I correct the tape drive behaviour and/or configure Bacula to handle it? Any ideas gratefully received. @Win Htin: You are definitely on the money with your suggested change to bacula-sd.conf and your mt commands to set the driver options. Cannot find any appendabl e volumes. I could write any time if the tape was initialised, and append while still in the same Linux session. This was not due to fixed block size - I had already had that problem after erroneously configuring bacula-sd.conf, which meant I could never append. I haven't had time to work out by trial error eactly which settings make the difference, but it is definitely down to the driver writing a MTEOM marker if the system is cycled with a tape mounted. [Bacula-users] Can Bacula set job pool from environmental variable?
Is it possible for Bacula to get the pool to be used for a job from an environmental variable, or otherwise set it programmatically? I have a Tandberg SLR7 tape drive for backup of home directories on our HTPC. I want to have a weekly full backup, followed by daily incremental on the following 6 days, all on the same tape. I want a 5 week rotation, with a separate pool for each week to make sure the right tape is used. I have got a script to work out which pool to use (by time elapsed since start of the backup regime) and set the appropriate pool name in an environmental variable I can set this as a pre-job command, but director gives an error if the job pool is set to anyhting other than the string literal ID of a defined pool. I can schedule to use the correct pool by using W01, W02 etc., but it is cumbersome will have need to be re-worked over the year end.
