I need to specify a per-job Job Retention. On bacula main

Plain question: can I specify a big (bogus) Job Retention for the client

[Bacula-users] Restore hangs on bat (Postgresql)

Is the director x console version mismatch the problem or should I check

Yes, bconsole works, and It works on bat 5.0 too. Just _my_ bat 5.2 doesn't.

Where exactly hangs the restore?

On the Building directory tree for JobId(s) xxx, xxx, xxx

Do you have tuned your PostgreSQL installation? The default settings
are for wide compatibility and not perfomance, see [1]. I have
adjusted shared_buffers to 2GB and effective_cache_size to 5G and this
boost the building directory phase of a restore greatly. Furthermore I
have tuned the squence object arrcording to [2], but I think this
isn't helpful for restores.
I felt the need for some tune, but this is not the issue. As I told
John, restore works on bconsole and bat 5.0, the issue is just with my
bat 5.2.

Regarding Postgre tunning, will procrastinate this since it is not the
issue. But will definitely do it when time is available.

Before migrating to postgres (which is a good choice for big

I am running dbcheck to see how many rabbits come out of the bushes.
File table is only 6.6GB and Log is 105GB. What's that Log table for? It

Also, in a near future I will change bacula-dir to another server, which
will be a good opportunity to start a blank catalog and go with
Postgres, without any migration, just keeping the old one sitting there

As Gavin pointed out, a 150GB database is huuuge for only a

Unless you have billions of files on each client there is no reason
your catalog is that large.
Are you sure you correctly applied job and file retention on your
catalog? Also are you sure you catalog is not full of orphaned records?

Before migrating to postgres (which is a good choice for big
catalogs), I would look at the catalog to see if all retention
period are correctly applied.
I am running dbcheck to see how many rabbits come out of the bushes.
File table is only 6.6GB and Log is 105GB. What's that Log table for?
It only have blobs...
It is supposed to contain bacula report... just like in the bacula log
file.
I'm not sure having such a big amount of data in another table hurts,
may be it does if you use innodb.
If you use MyISAM... my guess is it should not hurts... but note I am
not a DBA!

Me neither, and it is innodb, in my case.

However, I'd like to know if this table can be safely purged? As one
day or another it will grow to an unacceptable size... (even more if I
have the same info in logfile).

+1
Can it?

Thanks, but nah! I'd rather purge this. I'll set another server anyway...

[Bacula-users] Maildir and mysql plugin

2010-08-23 Thread Marcio Merlone
  Good afternoon!

I was wondering... would be nice to have a maildir backup plugin, where
one could backup a maildir and have its contents indexed and restorable
by sender, subject, date, attachments, etc.. I could try to write one
myself, but wouldn't have the required skills and time. Has anyone ever
though about this? Is it doable?

Not to mention a mysql plugin, where one could restore specific
database, table, row, on a live system

I think those are the features lacking on bacula to put it side-by-side
with commercial products. Pls, no flames! Bacula is great, I love it,
and would not change it for a commercial one even if they were free, I
am just making a feature request and brain storming. That could even
pave the path for Exchange, MS-SQL, Firebird, Oracle, etc...

Best regards.

It is a good idea. It should be easy. The problem is, who wants to use it?

Good question, at least me. Not that I ever needed anyway, but seems
cool and rather useful in an event. :)

Not to mention a mysql plugin, where one could restore specific

Well, a mysql plugin for hot backup should be available soon :)

Is there an ETA?

But a problem is it will backup a whole mysql instance, not a specific
database, table or row. The main problem with restoring database
objects on a live system is database data integrity. You can't restore
a particular row without checking table or column constraints,
triggers or else.

Sure.

A plugin for backup of Exchange is available for some time. Plugin for
Oracle is on newest project TODO list.
But to compete with other commercial products, Bacula should have a
strong commercial support and development, so not all new feature will
be available on community version, only on enterprise one - check
Kerns email on bacula-devel a few weeks ago.

Thanks God I don't care about exchange. But I do about MS-SQL. Any plans
for that? Currently I use community version, but with a MS-SQL plugin it
could change.

Total bytes, blocks, position, etc, nothing changes. Could this be a
version mismatch between director and fd on the client? Any workaround?
