Re: [Bacula-users] Backing up MS SQL server with Bacula?
Hi, thank you all for your ideas. @James The idea of your client sounds very good. Seems to be a great plugin for Exchange - perhaps sometime for MSSQL, too. At the moment I'm not able to you use VSS because the operating system is Windows 2000 Server an we are using MS SQL Server 2000, so there is no VSS available. So I have to use the builtin backup routine of SQL Server and backup these files with bacula as usual. What backup procedure do you use for your MS SQL databases? There are several options available - I use the SQL maintenance function with a Transact SQL script that does a full backup of all databases once a week (filextension *.BAK) and an everyday backup of the transaction logs (filextension *.TRN). Not the best method, I think... There is another way doing this with a virtual tape file - anyone using this? Matthias - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. [Bacula-users] Backing up MS SQL server with Bacula?
Hi list, anyone backuped a MS SQL server with Bacula? Is this somehow possible - are there any plugins for that or do I have to use the built-in backup functionality of the MS SQL server and backup the database dumps / transaction logs later with Bacula? [Bacula-users] Does the File-Daemon store temporary files?
Hi list, does the Bacula File-Daemon store temporary files on the client if I use the gzip compression? If so where can I find this temporary fileson Windows and Linux systems? Is there a max. size for the temporary storage or is it all done on-the-fly so no additional storage space is needed? Matthias - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Hi, Arno Lehmann schrieb: If so where can I find this temporary fileson Windows and Linux systems? It does not need disk space for that, only a certain amount of RAM and, more important, CPU cycles. Thanks Arno! This is what I wanted to hear - no waste of harddisk space on the client for compression ;) Matthias - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. [Bacula-users] What happens if I won't change a full tape?
Hi list, I'm just wondering what would happen if Bacula wants to write a backup on a full tape or is waiting for a new tape? Will the backup completely stop or will it somehow get spooled? I'm just asking because I want to know if I can delay the change of a tape for a few days or so while Bacula still makes backup (spooling them or writing them to a temporary location and then writing them back to tape when I insert a new tape). Or can I change a tape before it is full so I can be sure it needn't to be changed the next few days? Matthias - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Re: [Bacula-users] What happens if I won't change a full tape?
John Drescher schrieb: Or can I change a tape before it is full so I can be sure it needn't to be changed the next few days? You can change a tape before it hits the Full as long as no jobs are running, the new tape has the Append status and it is in the same pool as the old and you have configured Accept Any Volume = yes in the pool definition. If you have tape auto mounting on make sure when you unmount the Full tape you use release command. That way you can just insert the new tape into the drive and auto mounting will work. If you use the unmount command bacula will require you to mount the tape from a bacula console after inserting it. Thanks John. This sounds like a good idea. I will try that to keep backups running even when I can't change the tape. Matthias - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Still grepping through log files to find problems? Stop. Re: [Bacula-users] Backup to disk AND tape
Hi, thanks for your answer, Arno. Arno Lehmann schrieb: Hi, No, that's not possible. There are a number of workarounds possible, but the ideal thing is currently not possible. It's discussed, though, and I think anyone (relevant :-) thinks such athing would be useful. Which workaround is possible at the moment to get the files to tape AND to disk? I did not find an suitable answer when searching the lists. Would be nice to have the files on disk for some period to get a file back quickly ;) Matthias - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. [Bacula-users] Compress files on storage daemon and not on client
Hi everyone, I'm just getting used to Bacula and I'm really impressed about it! But one thing bothers me: I'm using the built-in gzip compression. The files to backup are always compressed on the client side so that the client has a lot of cpu usage at that time. As I'm using a dedicated storage server for the director and storage daemon I'd rather like to compress the files on this server. Is this possible with bacula? [Bacula-users] Backup to disk AND tape
Hi everyone, I want to use Bacula to backup my files to disk AND to tape at the same time. The backup on disk should be available for 3 months or so while the backup on tape should not be overwritten before 12 months. Is this possible with Bacula? How do I accomplish this without the need to run the backup job twice? Matthias - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges.
