[Bacula-users] restrict pool to write to single volume
Hi there, I don't know if this has been discussed but google won't show me relevant results. I use bacula to backup to eternus library with 4 drives. Multi drive config and simultaneous write works great. But what I need is to restrict one pool (offsite pool) to write to only single volume so that I can take it out of the library and store in a safe place. My total backup size fits in single media. Single media restriction is required for only one pool. The other pools should not be affected. How can i achieve this? My pool config is below. Thanks. Pool { Name = Offsite Pool Type = Backup Recycle = yes # Bacula can automatically recycle Volumes AutoPrune = yes # Prune expired volumes #Use Volume Once = yes Volume Retention = 365 days # one year Maximum Volume Bytes = 4924983103488 #Recycle Pool = Offsite } -- Site24x7 APM Insight: Get Deep Visibility into Application Performance APM + Mobile APM + RUM: Monitor 3 App instances at just $35/Month Monitor end-to-end web transactions and take corrective actions now Troubleshoot faster and improve end-user experience. Prefer Mounted Volumes=no it's a directive that could allow to write multiple volumes within the same pool at the same time, however this is a little buggy and not recommended at this time. It's not a bug, but it is a little buggy?? I think that the only problem with setting Prefer Mounted Volumes = no is that it will result in a lot of moving of a volume back and forth between drives. While it might not be a bug, since it works as advertised, it CAN be a problem. For tape, it will really slow things down because it takes a substantial time to move a tape out of one drive and into another. For disk virtual autochangers, though, the moving between drives is simply closing a disk file and then re-opening it, meaning that the delay is very negligible. I would really prefer autochanger to move volumes back and forth rather than wait a couple of hours for the job to finish especially when there are 3 drives just sitting lazy. If there is some other issue, like a race condition that I am not aware of, then that would indeed be a bug in my book. But I have used PreferMountedVolumes=no for disk virtual autochanger without (so far) encountering any such problems, just the swapping between drives. And for disk virtual autochangers, I don't see that as a problem in and of itself. [Bacula-users] bacula can't make use of multi drives
Hi, I am trying to make bacula use multi drives in a Fujitsu Tape Library with no success. Recently I added 3 more drives to bacula configuration to reduce backup time. But bacula insists on using only the first drive. Backup jobs are not sent to other suitable tape drives. Jobs are started at the same time and queued. Re: [Bacula-users] exclude day from schedule
Sample schedule is missing weekly and montly pools. Each pools retention time is different. Daily pool expires after a week. Weekly pool expires after 4 weeks, monthly pool expires after 12 months. Sometimes it is necessary to restore previous backups not the latest. This way I have a wide range of options to restore. But i'm not sureif itis better by including weekly and montly pool media to daily pool and set the expiration time to 365 daysand only backup to daily pool. If you want to restore a 6 months old backup, how do you configureyour schedule? You are right that I have two full backups on sunday, it is a mistake. I should remove daily backup on sundays. The really strange thing is that you are running a full backup to the Daily pool at 3:17 each morning and an incremental each day except Sunday at 19:05 to the Weekly pool. Assuming normal business hours, that means you are doing an incremental followed by a full each day. Do you need two backups each day? The sample schedule looks pretty good and appears to do what you want: Schedule { Name = ScheduleTest Run = Full 1st sun at 23:05 Run = Differential 2nd-5th sun at 23:05 Run = Incremental mon-sat at 23:05 } In fact, you could even simplify it to running a full every Sunday and incrementals in between. Schedule { Name = ScheduleTest2 Run = Full sun at 23:05 Run = Incremental mon-sat at 23:05 } If you put the incrementals into a different pool from the full/differential then you keep the size of the pool you want offsite manageable. If you are backing up the catalogue (a common practise) along with the files, then you don't need to run a full backup to an Offsite pool. I just copy the Weekly pool to a removable drive/media each week after the weekly Full or Differential backup finishes. This can be done as a RunAfterJob script or as a cron job. Should you need to restore the pool, just copy it back to your disk drive. -- Get your SQL database under version control now! [Bacula-users] exclude day from schedule
Hi, I read the docs but couldn't find any info. Is it possible to exclude from schedule? My schedule is as follows: Schedule { Name = MultipleRUN Run = Level=Full Pool=Daily mon-sun at 3:17 Run = Level=Full Pool=Weekly sun at 9:05 Run = Level=Incremental Pool=Weekly mon-sat at 19:05 Run = Level=Full Pool=Monthly 1st sat at 2:05 Run = Level=Full Pool=Offsite 1st fri at 2:05 } What I'm trying to do is to prevent Daily full backup from running when thereis a Monthly full backup is scheduled for the same day. Is the following possible? Run = Level=Full Pool=Daily mon-sun at 3:17 *not 1 st sat* Thanksfor your time. -- Get your SQL database under version control now! He does a full on Sunday to the weekly pool and incrementals the rest of the week. Each incremental should have just the day's changes. What I find strange is that he's running the Offsite a day before the Monthly while the Weekly full is 31 hours after the Monthly. Given that the month doesn't always start on the same day of the week, the various backups could be done on different weeks (e.g. the first Saturday may be before or after the first Sunday). Another strange thing is that he's running both full and incremental backups each day, with two full backups on Sunday. I don't understand why anyone would do this. -- Get your SQL database under version control now! Version control is standard for application code, but databases havent caught up. I am also not sure about upgrading from Simone Caronni's repo. If purging works fine than there is no need to break Bacula. On 07-02-2013 16:08, Summers, James B. I seem to remember that was a bug in some old version of Bacula. Which version are you using? We are running 5.0.0-9 on a RHEL 6.3 machine. I'm quite happy with Simone Caronni's Bacula builds for RHEL from http://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/slaanesh/bacula/epel-6/x86_64/ . It's currently at release 5.2.12-7. Scanning through my old logs, I see I did get that same message back when I still ran 5.0.0. It disappeared after the upgrade to 5.2.6 in March 2012. Before I actually do the upgrade, I was wondering, if it is just an erroneous message and it actually is purging on the 180 day job retention? The reason I ask is last week I had reached a point where I needed to start re-using old volumes. Which I was able to resolve by adjusting the Volume retention time. But I think when I did that it also overrides the job and file retention anyway, so it really was not a problem. I think I will use bconsole and see if I can determine if the job and file retention times are being used as expected.
