Eg: Option { File = C:/database/mydb.mdf Always Back Up = Yes } you could create a backup job with just that file in it and run it always as full. - Thomas I think his goal is to recreate some differential backups for MSSQL (RMAN provides it for Oracle). you can't do a Differential or Incremental backup of MSSQL data files. this would require a FD plugin or another tool. To do that, he needs to know which datafiles moved... If you perform a touch on each of them, it's not a differential backup but a full one. Are we sure that all data pieces have been flushed to disk before the VSS snapshot occurred ? yes, MSSQL provides a VSS Plugin. so MSSQL knows when it has to flush to disk. - Thomas -- Benefiting from Server Virtualization: Beyond Initial Workload Consolidation -- Increasing the use of server virtualization is a top priority.Virtualization can reduce costs, simplify management, and improve application availability and disaster protection. Re: [Bacula-users] Network performance
I had to disable the Maximum Network Buffer Size in the mean time, coincidence or not the director started throwing out unknown errors while connecting to storage, so this test is run with default buffer sizes (which shouldn't be a problem - I got 91-93% of the max link speed with iperf using default buffer sizes) This test: * Uses TLS encryption [encrypted comms] * Uses PKI encryption [encrypted backup data] * Does not use compression I don't think TLS/PKI is the cause - there's plenty of CPU% while it's running. Could investigate this further. are you sure PKI (data encryption) is not the bottleneck? IMHO PKI is single-threaded (as gzip compression is) and can just use one processor (or one core of a multi-core processor). the plenty of CPU% could be the other cores which cannot be used to do encryption. on linux, start top, press 1 and you will get stats of every core. - Thomas -- This SF.net email is sponsored by Make an app they can't live without Enter the BlackBerry Developer Challenge http://p.sf.net/sfu/RIM-dev2dev ___ Bacula-users mailing list Bacula-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/bacula-users

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula slow, possibly network
Am Tue, 11 May 2010 03:47:05 -0700 schrieb martinofmoscow: Hi, we've come over from an Amanda backup system which had become a nightmare to administer, and generally we're very happy with Bacula. My concern thought is speed: Bacula is proving to be very slow, possibly in relation - it seems - to its network utilisation. We're backing up over a managed 100Mbps LAN, so not lightning-fast, but ought to be ok for 400Gb overnight full weekly backup and typically 5Gb nightly differential. Although the methodology of Bacula and Amanda are different, I'm fairly certain Amanda was much, much faster at backing up over a network than could deal with this quite well. I kicked off a [400Gb, full] bacup at 1am on Saturday and it completed 11 hours later at mid-day. Interestingly, I just noticed that the Bacula dir was able to reel off a backup of the fd on localhost of about 750Mb in under 10 seconds, which is why I'm looking towards the way Bacula uses the network as the possible source of the problem. Conversely, a differential of 6Mb from a client on the local LAN just took a few minutes to complete. Another possibility is spooling. I've set up a spool directory on the director/sd but have never seen it used. Relatedly, the tape drive during backups is very stop/start, with a lot of pauses. We're using an HP StorageWorks Ultrium 960 with LTO-3 tapes. The dir/sd is a PowerEdge running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and the supported Bacula 2.2.8. The clients are running Ubuntu LTS and Redhat EL5 across a 100Mbps LAN. I am not using TLS encryption for these servers, although I will be using it soon for backing up two more servers across the internet. did you read: http://www.bacula.org/en/dev-manual/Data_Spooling.html and did you enable the SpoolData in the Job definition? the tape is likely faster than 100mbps resulting in starting/stoping alot (== slow) if data-spooling is not configured correctly. -- ___ Bacula-users mailing list Bacula-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/bacula-users

Considering all this parameters I need some advice about the choice of my hard disks. I'm planing to buy a StorageWorks array from Hp (DAS) but I don't know what's the best choice for the hard disks. I'm pretty sure that a fast hard disk is better for performance but it's not for money saving :), I'm wondering if big sata disks of 2TB/7.2k rpm are fast enough to achieve my backups in time or is it better to buy faster/sas disks to be sure it's done in time. 100Mb == 100mbit? 100Mbit will result in about 9MB/s . To transfer 3,5TB over ethernet you would need about 108hours. you need _at least_ 1Gbit ethernet on the backup-server. if there are millions of small files involved on the backedup servers, there will be much less throuhput. also do not place the DB data not on the same spindles as the backup volumes. Re: [Bacula-users] Problems with automatic labeling
be sure to set Retention times on the pool (e.g. for your schedule maybe 18 days) and and a use duration (maybe 1 day as you change it on a daily basis). I know that my Retention times is wrong right now, but I'm just doing some test so I purge volumes manually. But Thanks for the use duration, I will set it up. Well, again, assuming that the volume is purged from the catalog, the tape is rewind and woef-ed.. I still don't unterstand why bacula doesn't want to relabel the volume. if you purge a tape , the tape label is still in the database. you would need to delete it. I mean, the label format worked fine for the first backup but apparently there is no way to relabel the tape. Will it really fix the problem if I change the label format ? i've never used your method to write woef with a pre-script. IMHO bacula is not designed to work this way (what doesn't mean that you could not do it this way with scripts and try and error). The tape cycle is the following: label the tape - write to it (append) - full or used (when use duration is over) - prune it (retention time is over, purged) - reuse the tape (recycle) you only label it once. the label remains also with recycling. so you write the bacula label on the tape and you will know which tape to insert if you need to restore something. - Thomas -- Download Intel#174; Parallel Studio Eval Try the new software tools for yourself. Are barcode labels a requirement, or is there an alternative ? no there is no requirement, but the drive is slow on changing tapes. an update slots scan (for all 16 slots) takes about 20min or so (but not 12h) whereas with barcode labels it takes 5s. Apologies, for my bad description, I have been using the GUI version of BAT to label the tapes, I know there is the label console command, but apart from the console in BAT, I haven;t found how to get into a CLI console. the command is bconsole for the cli version. http://bacula.org/5.0.x-manuals/en/console/console/index.html -- SOLARIS 10 is the OS for Data Centers - provides features such as DTrace, Predictive Self Healing and Award Winning ZFS.
