Dear David,

Baha'u'llah doesn't use the word 'saved' that passage you cited.

I don't think it is our place to make judgements as to why others
believe or don't believe. We should concern ourselves with our own
spiritual condition not that of others.

warmest, Susan

Re: Too stupid to be saved?

2007-03-16 Thread SKYGRAM

David,

It seems to me that by using that same reasoning,

some of us will be "saved" as a result of pure dumb luck!

I would have thought that God might be pickier than that.

Bill

Too stupid to be saved?

2007-03-16 Thread David Friedman
The Baha'i Writings say one must believe in and follow the laws of the
Manifestation to be saved:

The first duty prescribed by God for His servants is the recognition of Him
Who is the Dayspring of His Revelation and the Fountain of His laws, Who
representeth the Godhead in both the Kingdom of His Cause and the world of
creation. Whoso achieveth this duty hath attained unto all good; and whoso
is deprived thereof hath gone astray, though he be the author of every
righteous deed. It behoveth every one who reacheth this most sublime
station, this summit of transcendent glory, to observe every ordinance of
Him Who is the Desire of the world. These twin duties are inseparable.
Neither is acceptable without the other. Thus hath it been decreed by Him
Who is the Source of Divine inspiration.

[Bahá'í Library CD-ROM: Baha'u'llah: Kitab-i-Aqdas, Page: 19]

Some Baha'is will fall away from the Faith, not believing in Baha'u'llah
anymore. One or more things He says don't seem right to them anymore. Some
of these people may come back to the Faith eventually when their issues have
been resolved. Are people who turn away from the Cause necessarily in
possession of some spiritual flaw? Everything I've read suggests so. The
above passage says such a person has gone astray, and the Tablet of Ahmad
says " Be thou assured in thyself that verily, he who turns away from this
Beauty hath also turned away from the Messengers of the past and showeth
pride towards God from all eternity to all eternity." If a person who turns
away from God shows pride towards God they obviously must possess a
spiritual flaw. I find it difficult to believe that a person falling away
from the Cause is always going to be due to a flaw. Some of these people
come back to the Faith after resolving their issues. Some may come back
after other people answer their questions. Everything I've seen indicates
one doesn't have to be bright to recognize Baha'u'llah. How, then, do you
explain people who come back to the Cause after their intellectual problems
are answered? That some spiritual flaw of theirs was the reason they
weren't able to intellectually figure out answers to their questions? If
so, how do you explain how they were able to resolve their problems and come
back to the Cause? If whatever flaw was being a veil to their eyes why
would they still be see the truth? Couldn't a person who took a while to
think of answers to their problems simply not be all that intelligent or
have not thought of something initially? Can a person be too stupid to be
saved?

Regards,
David
