Dear Friends: The Wilmette Institute's next three-month e-learning course, Islam for Deepening and Dialogue, starts on February 15. It will will briefly survey pre-Islamic Arabia, examine the life of Muhammad, the process of revelation and subsequent compilation of the Qur'án, cover the teachings and practices of Islam, explore its rich civilization, and consider its current situation in the world. The subjects will be studied for the purposes of deepening and dialogue, that is, understanding the basics of Islam as a divinely revealed religion (and by comparison, the Bahá'í Faith) and dialoguing with Muslims (something we increasingly must do).
The lead faculty is Dr. Nesreen Akhtarkhavari, a Jordanian-Iranian Baha'i with a doctorate in multicultural education and a Masters degree is Islamic law. The readings include a wide variety of texts by Baha'is, Muslims, and others, some academic, some journalistic, some more popular. All texts will be available on the course's website and all discussion will occur on a web-based Forum. The course is a perfect opportunity to study Islam in order to understand the historical background of the Faith. The course also aims to develop skills in presenting to others and writing. One local study group is already forming. Individual tuition is $150, but we have financial assistance available. Local study groups can be formed with as many members locally as you wish and cost $300. For more information, write us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit our website at http://www.wilmetteinstitute.org .
