Subject: Wilmette Institute courses on Advent of Divine Justice (Aug.
15-Nov. 15), Tablets of Baha'u'llah Revealed after the Aqdas (Sept.
1-Nov. 30) start in next month
To: sman...@gmail.com

Have you ever wondered why Shoghi Effendi's secretary, writing on his
behalf, said THE ADVENT OF DIVINE JUSTICE has been rightly described as
the Baha'i Charter of Teaching? At this time when the American Baha'i
community is developing new habits and systems for teaching
systematically and effectively, study of THE ADVENT OF DIVINE JUSTICE is
particularly relevant, for it helps us understand the spiritual, mortal,
and ethical prerequisites for perfecting our characters and attracting
new souls to the Baha'i community. In addition to its relevance in our
efforts to teach the Faith and develop race unity, the book could be
described as a spiritual manual of living. The lead faculty, Jane Faily,
has been studying the text for decades.

The Wilmette Institute online course on ADVENT begins August 15 and runs
for three months. In addition to a slow read of the text, the course
provides background readings, recurrent study questions, and hundreds of
specific study questions geared to specific passages of the text.

Two weeks later, on September 1, the Wilmette Institute offers a
three-month online course on TABLETS OF BAHA'U'LLAH REVEALED AFTER THE
KITAB-I-AQDAS. The sixteen tablets studied cover such themes as
reformation of society, personal transformation, teaching the Faith, the
Covenant, the station of `Abdu'l-Baha, and various theological and
philosophical questions. The course has been extensively reformulated,
every tablet is accompanied by extensive descriptions and commentaries
by Shoghi Effendi and prominent Baha'i writers, and study questions will
be available. The lead faculty, Dr. Necati Alkan, knows Arabic and has
studied the time period extensively. This is an excellent opportunity to
familiarize oneself with these weighty and important works from
Baha'u'llah's pen.

Tuition for each course: $150 for individuals; $120 for senior citizens
(65 and older), university students (full time), pioneers (international
and home front). Financial aid, in the form of partial scholarships, is
available to individuals. $300 for groups (2-12 members). Course
registration closes two weeks after the course begins.

Wilmette Institute: Women in the Baha'i Faith

2009-07-18 Thread Susan Maneck
The Baha'i Studies Listserv
To encourage more people to register for the Wilmette Institute course
“Women in the Baha’i Faith,” everyone who registers for it will be
able to take a second Wilmette Institute course for free. What a deal!

Women in the Baha’i Faith looks at the role women play in the Faith. A
compilation of Baha’i writings opens the course with an opportunity to
consider the role given to women in the Baha’i writings. That
understanding is then enriched by reading Baha’i authors about the
subject, and enhanced by reading the ideas of non-Baha’i women.
Finally, we will look at the lives of individual women and consider
how they fulfilled their potential, furthered the advancement of
women, and fostered development of the Baha’i Faith.

The course is available on the web only; there are no classes to
attend. It starts July 21 and will run three months, with a two-month
grace period to complete work. We recommend that you not take the
second (free) course until this course ends, so as not to overload
yourself. All Wilmette Institute courses exist to help individuals to
develop their potential and strengthen their ability to serve the
Baha’i Faith and humanity.

Watch for further information about “The Advent of Divine Justice,”
our on-line course that surveys the classic book by Shoghi Effendi,
which starts August 15 and lasts three months.

Tuition: $150 for individuals; $120 for senior citizens (65 and
older), university students (full time), pioneers (international and
home front). Financial aid, in the form of partial scholarships, is
available to individuals. $300 for groups (2-12 members). Course
registration closes two weeks after the course begins.

Wilmette Institute

2007-12-05 Thread Susan Maneck
The Wilmette Institute has decided to offer a special deal it has never
tried before: a transferrable course coupon.

Register for either of our two December on-line courses-*The Secret of
Divine Civilization* or *How to Study the Baha'i Writings*-and we'll
provide you a numbered electronic coupon allowing you or anyone else to
take one Wilmette Institute course FOR FREE. The registered coupon can
be used only once.

*The Secret of Divine Civilization* course just started, but the next
week is devoted to introductions. This central text on the social and
economic reformation of the world was composed by `Abdu'l-Baha in 1875
and was one of the first Baha'i books ever published. Its theme of the
social impact of the spiritual transformation of the individual reminds
us why we have an outward-looking orientation and what the larger
purpose of the core activities is. It's an important work for Baha'is to
study.

*How to Study the Baha'i Writings* seeks to help develop the ultimate
skill Baha'is need: reading authoritative Baha'i texts in order to
understand them by both mind and heart. Scripture is not an easy thing
to understand; it uses symbolic language to express spiritual truths
with material imagery. Using a windows on the Baha'i writings
technique developed for this course by Dr. Sandra Hutchison, the course
will provide with nine different ways to look at a text; nine different
lenses with which to bring it into focus. This skill is of considerable
relevance to the institute process in particular and the core activities
in general; it can make daily study more effective, classes easier to
plan, and devotional programs quicker to put together.

Each course costs $120 for seniors, students, and pioneers; $150 for
other individuals; $300 for groups. Considerable financial aid is
available for those who cannot pay these prices. For more information,
visit our website or contact us.

Wilmette Institute

2007-04-14 Thread smaneck
Dear Friends on the winews, academics, and highered listservers:

The Wilmette Institute's course on the development of the Baha'i
community in the context of the Five Year Plan has been undergoing a
lot of revising in the last week or so. The Universal House of
Justice's recent message about Baha'i elections has been added to it.
The very important annual message of the American National Spiritual
Assembly in its annual report (which apparently parallels some themes
in the Universal House of Justice's Ridvan message) has also inspired
the course planners to rethink parts of the course. For these reasons,
we are pushing the course's start date back to May 1.

The course now has the following study units:

1. Introduction
2. What is a Community, in general?
3. What is a Baha'i Community?
4. What is the Five Year Plan for Community Building?
5. What is the Role of the Institutions in Community Building?
6. Integration and Conclusion

As you can see, the course is meant to be a significant contribution
to the Five Year Plan; a chance to review the existing guidance from
the Baha'i World Center about community building and the roles of
Spiritual Assemblies in the process. Community building is a key idea
behind the core activities; they are meant to create something that is
attractive to inquirers (not just the core activities themselves, but
a networked, unified, and transformed community of believers). We hope
you can join us in the conversation about how to accomplish this goal.

The course price is $75 for most adults; $60 for students, pioneers,
and seniors; and $150 for groups (which can be as large as you wish).

Wilmette Institute

2006-11-10 Thread smaneck
The Wilmette Institute is pleased to offer its course on the Ministry
of Shoghi Effendi (1897-1957), again. Guardian of the Bahá'í Faith
from 1921 until his passing, Shoghi Effendi devoted much of his early
ministry to construction of the administrative order defined in
`Abdu'l-Bahá's Will and Testament, then used it as an instrument for
carrying out the vast spread of the Bahá'í Faith called for by `Abdu'l-
Bahá in the Tablets of the Divine Plan. Throughout his ministry Shoghi
Effendi worked tirelessly to translate the writings of Bahá'u'lláh
into English and to pen hundreds of epistles clarifying basic Bahá'í
teachings. His devotion, self-sacrifice, and suffering are an
inspiration to Bahá'ís of all generations.

The beginning of a new plan is an ideal time to study him, for he set
the pattern of our plans. The Wilmette Institute's course will use a
unique collection of published biographies, articles, and
commentaries, assembling them together in a systematic framework for
the learner who wishes to understand the Guardian in depth.

The course will be taught by Peter Terry, Zaid Lundberg, and Duane
Troxel. It starts November 15--a week from now--and last three months.
It is taught completely via the Worldwide Web, with all readings and
the discussion Forum available in a few clicks. The cost is $150 for
an individual, but ample scholarships and discounts are available;
just email us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Group registrations are
$300. Anyone can start a group, pay for it, and recoup the fee from
those who join the group. Everyone in the group is assigned the same
mentor, so he or she can call the group at their convenience.

Plan to take the course in order to give presentations about the
Guardian to study classes, deepenings, children's classes, firesides,
and other gatherings. Your mentor will be ready to advise and assist
you.

Please share this news with others in the next few days. For more
information, go to http://wilmetteinstitute.us.bahai.org or call us
toll-free at 877-wilmette (945-6388).

The cost of the three-month course *Baha'i History, 1863-2000,* which
was to
start November 1, has just been cut in half to encourage more
participation.
Heretofore, individual tuition will be $75 and local study groups will
cost $150.

Don't miss this great opportunity to study the unfoldment of our
beloved Faith! But to get the discount, don't go to our registration
page
and click on register; the software can't offer discounts. Email
us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead and we'll tell you how to
register.

The course is the first in a series of new courses by the Wilmette
Institute to explore Baha'i history. Focusing on *God Passes By* (which
Covers 1844-1944) and *Century of Light* (which covers 1900-2000 and
looks at
events both inside and outside the Baha'i community), it will provide a
golden opportunity to read both of these works slowly, carefully, and
comparatively. A small library of other documents on Baha'i history
Is also available as pdfs to provide background and context as
desired by the reader.

History is not a dry collection of dates, but the dynamic evolution of
a community as it grows and faces internal and external challenges. It
teaches us where we have come from and helps us understand the tasks we
face today, during the new Five Year Plan. Join us in this exploration
of the progress of the Baha'i community.

Dear Friends:

The Wilmette Institute is pleased to announce its 2007 course
schedule. Please spread this information around among your friends,
take it to Feast, etc., Also, please let people know about our
upcoming courses in November and December. We have a lot to offer over
the next year to personal transformation, development of human
resources, fostering community life, and helping the Faith build
toward entry by troops. We hope over the next year to make important
contributions.

THE MINISTRY OF SHOGHI EFFENDI

TOPIC: Shoghi Effendi Rabbani (1897-1957), the eldest grandson of
`Abdu'l-Bahá, is a crucial figure for understanding the Bahá'í Faith.
Guardian of the Bahá'í Faith from 1921 until his passing, Shoghi
Effendi devoted much of his early ministry to construction of the
administrative order defined in `Abdu'l-Bahá's Will and Testament,
then used it as an instrument for carrying out the vast spread of the
Bahá'í Faith called for by `Abdu'l-Bahá in the Tablets of the Divine
Plan. Throughout his ministry Shoghi Effendi worked tirelessly to
translate the writings of Bahá'u'lláh into English and to pen hundreds
of epistles clarifying basic Bahá'í teachings. His devotion, self-
sacrifice, and suffering are an inspiration to Bahá'ís of all
generations.

DATES: November 15, 2006 to February 15, 2007

TEXTS: A special package of readings assembled by the Wilmette
Institute.

FACULTY: Peter Terry, Zaid Lundberg, and Duane Troxel.

THE QUR'AN

TOPIC: The Qur'án is the divine revelation on which the religion of
Islam is based. The Bahá'í sacred writings are filled with quotations
from it and allusions to it, and many words used by the Báb,
Bahá'u'lláh, and `Abdu'l-Bahá have qur'ánic resonances. Its study by
Bahá'ís is emphasized by Shoghi Effendi: They must. . .approach
reverently and with a mind purged from preconceived ideas the study of
the Qur'án which, apart from the sacred scriptures of the Bábí and
Bahá'í Revelations, constitutes the only Book which can be regarded as
an absolutely authenticated Repository of the Word of God (ADJ
49). The Guardian would certainly advise, and even urge the friends
to make a thorough study of the Qur'án, as the knowledge of this
sacred Scripture is absolutely indispensable for every believer who
wishes to adequately understand and intelligently read, the writings
of Bahá'u'lláh Directives of the Guardian, p. 63). The course will
examine the entire text of the Qur'án and Is
lamic and Bahá'í commentaries on its meaning. Technical terms will be
explained in order to make the text accessible to those who do not
know Arabic.

DATES: December 1, 2006, to February 28, 2007

TEXTS: The Qur'án and various commentaries and supplemental readings
assigned by the Institute.

FACULTY: Peter Terry, Omid Ghamaeghami, Cynthia Shawamreh, and others.

BAHA'I THEOLOGY: CONCEPTS OF GOD, REVELATION, MANIFESTATION, CREATION,
HUMANITY, AFTERLIFE, AND COVENANT

Bahá'í Theology is neither highly abstract, nor excessively difficult,
nor a narrow and specialized study. Rather, it consists of many of the
most basic and central teachings of the Bahá'í Faith: its concept of
the nature of God; how that God guides humanity through revelation
vouchsafed unto Manifestations; the nature and purpose of the
Manifestations and their successive teachings (progressive revelation
and the Covenant); the nature and purpose of human beings and their
physical existence; the nature of physical creation; and the nature of
the next world. In short, Bahá'í Theology answers the basic questions
human beings have always asked about the nature and purpose of life.
The course should be a great help in answering seekers' questions
about the Faith and providing a context in which other Bahá'í
teachings fit together.

FACULTY: Peter Terry, Ted Brownstein, and Zaid Lundberg.

TEXTS: A compilation of Bahá'í scriptural texts, articles and chapters
by Bahá'ís, and some material on theology in general.

COST OF ALL COURSES: $150 (individual); $120 (senior citizens [65 and
older], students, pioneers); $300 (group); financial aid is available.

Wilmette Institute Course

2006-04-17 Thread smaneck
The Wilmette Institute is about to launch its new three-month e-

have been too low. Since this is an experimental course, we have

Wilmette Institute Course

2005-05-07 Thread Susan Maneck

The Wilmette Institute will be offering a three-month e-learning course
titled The Baha'i Administrative Institutions: This Unique and Wondrous
Systemstarting May 15. The National Spiritual Assembly has asked the
friends in the United States to study the two arms of the administrative
order-the institutions of the Houses of Justice and the Counselors-in the
last year of the Five Year Plan. The Wilmette Institute course will examine
the unique nature of the Baha'i administrative order, its two arms, their
complementary and collaborative nature, and their relationship to the
individual believers. Background information about the Will and Testament of
`Abdu'l-Baha and the Guardianship will also be provided to trace the
administrative order's roots. The course is a perfect opportunity to acquire
basic knowledge about the Baha'i system of organization, information
relevant to its functioning in your local community. It will also provide
the necessary background for offering classes on the annual educational
theme in your local community; and since the theme often involves input from
the Universal House of Justice, it is clear that the institute process is
not meant to be the only educational efforts going on locally.

The cost is $150 for individuals and $300 for local study groups. The course
consists of seven study units, each of which involves reading and discussion
of the subject over the internet. At the end, each student completes a
project of his or her own choosing in consultatin with a mentor assigned by
the Institute.

Come join this course and develop your knowledge of the unique and wondrous
system that will be the pattern of future society.

about the Wilmette Institute for local dissemination
Dear Baha'i Friends:
The Wilmette Institute seeks your assistance to let
the friends know about its upcoming summer session of the Spiritual Foundations
for a Global Civilization program.
http://www.wilmetteinstitute.org/press/sfgcflier2005A.pdf

The flier describes the program, which involves
"e-learning" (study over the Internet) AND attending a ten-day residential
session in Wilmette July 29-August 7, 2005. The program this year focuses on the
physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual development of the individual and the
creation of strong Baha'i marriages and families. These are immensely important
topics for everyone, and very interesting; furthermore, we have Michael Penn,
Saba Ayman-Nolley, and Leslie Asplund, all seasoned Baha'is and experienced
professionals, giving the classes. They should be very engaging, and at $450
tuition (lodging and meals are extra, but local students can commute if they
prefer) they're a bargain. Please consider coming to Wilmette to pray daily at
the House of Worship and engage in intense study with a group of very
interesting Baha'is. If you need financial aid, we have some we can offer. If
anyone is interested in applying after June 1, they can be considered on a space
available basis, so don't wait!
The Wilmette Institute greatly appreciates your
assistance in publicizing this course to the friends in your area and welcomes
questions, ideas, and suggestions so that we may serve the American Baha'i
community better. Contact us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or at 877-wilmette
(877-945-6388).

 Sincerely
Yours,
