Re: proselytize/teach

2007-04-03 Thread firestorm
my dim recall of the oed has proselytising coming from how old greek
sheepherders cuased to turn etc a bunch of sheep,
and teach coming from how an old german or friesian or such would show
somebody how to or why to do something. i also recal a pilgm's note from a Hand
of Cause who happenedto be married to shoghi effendi that webster's 2d int'l
was his source reference for finding the right meanng of a word, tho frequently
he found it in the 3rd or 5th defintion given in an entry.
i would offer that the differce between the 2wrds becomes clearer with a
vsualisation of each acticitys history.

Yes, the dictionary isn't of much help when it comes to understanding
what the Guardian meant by not proselytizing.

What I found odd about that was the OED didn't mention the
 pressure
aspect but defined it as conversion:

 proselyte, v.
trans. To make a proselyte of; to cause to come over or turn from
 one
opinion, belief, creed, or party to another; esp. to convert from
 one
religious faith or sect to another; to proselytize.

 proselyte, n.
 1. One who has come over from one opinion, belief, creed, or party
 to
 another; a convert.

What's the difference between proselytizing and teaching?

The way the Guardian uses the term it seems to apply to any
 behavior
which might put undue pressure on a contact to become a Baha'i.
