I'm a one.

 2. How many are active in attending the Bangalore meetups?

None of the meetups, but attended most of Indian editions of PyCon. Gave a
tutorial last year at PyCon India.

 3. How much is the participation of these women for any of Bangalore Python
 outreach activities.

What do you mean by outreach activities?

 4. Of the active members, how many have been active in producing good
 quality talks, workshops, etc.

AFAIK, there're very few active women on this list.

@Annapoornima
Being an active user of Python, I'm curious to know what are the goals of
PyLadies chapter. I've been listening to this list for many years now, but
never came across any posts from you before this discussion. Would be great
to know more about what you've been doing with Python lately.

Combine your questions, answer for 2, 3, 4, plus the fact that there are
three of us in a 1100 odd list. Please do the math. That combined with your
above answer, u pretty much answered your own questions. If you are still
not happy, shoot an email offline or join Pyladies Bangalore mailing list.
We have a growing community of women programmers and discuss quite a lot of
them.

Same here. Never knew you existed also..:-) Quite mutual ..! I am learning
python and helping others learn Python.

Just a couple of things, I am a Bangalorean. However I studied and did my
masters in US. And I shuttle between California and Bangalore a couple of
times in a year. I am very interested in Bangalore startup culture. Hence I
am trying to see what I can do to improve the less than .2% women
participation from Bangalore.

Its great to connect with an experienced lady python programmer. It will be
nice if you can come down and talk to some of the ladies to teach them
python programming.

Thanks for your email. Its always nice to know there is other ladies on
this list.

Thanks and regards,
Annapoornima

What do you mean by outreach activities?

The PSF has various committees[0] and one of those is the outreach and
education committee, which funds activities like sprints and
workshops. The Pandas workshop I organised last year was funded by the
Sprints committee as was Asheesh's (who helped me a lot) travel.

They have a specific application format and if Pyladies-BLR would like
to host sprints, workshops, bug-squashing sessions, documentation,
etc... for core Python libs, I would love to help you draft an
application for the local event.

Although this is not addressed to me, I'll take the liberty of
answering it. From, http://www.pyladies.com/,

We are an international mentorship group with a focus on helping more
women become active participants and leaders in the Python open-source
community. Our mission is to promote, educate and advance a diverse
Python community through outreach, education, conferences, events and
social gatherings.

PyLadies also aims to provide a friendly support network for women and
a bridge to the larger Python world. Anyone with an interest in Python
is encouraged to participate!

There is an irc channel #pyladies on freenode, which averages between
60-70 people on any given day. Besides, Pyladies is pretty active in
providing FA to women who wish to attend/speak at Pycon. From this
year on, speakers can apply for FA directly on the pycon website.
Also, this year, they have started workshops on helping women submit
more proposals:

Re: [BangPypers] Pyladies Bangalore

2013-08-26 Thread Devi
Thanks for the detailed answers Svaksha and Annapoornima. I just joined
pyladies-blr list.

Still, I'm not sure of how having a separate group for ladies could help
more women to learn Python. This is going to be my personal opinion, though.

If we (ladies) have different needs in learning Python/programming than our
counterparts, then it makes sense to have a separate group. For example, it
makes more sense, IMO, to have a pyfreshers group than pyladies, where
people who're starting with Python don't need to hesitate to ask/discuss
basic doubts/questions. When we're aspiring to learn and share the same
thing in a no different way than others, why a separate group?

I think, if we have any concerns/suggestions to make BangPypers more woman
friendly, they can be posted and discussed here. We are already a part of
larger Python world and I doubt if we need a separate identity first and
then to bridge the gap later. We could take from the larger community and
give back to the same. (s/we/women/g)
