i'm a web developer, building sites with php and mysql (for the most part).
although i don't use all of bbedit's functionality it's the ultimate power
tool for what i (and apparently many others) do.

the developers have always been incredibly responsive, supportive,
proactive and consistently laugh with me rather than at me when i haven't
RTFM... especially patrick. 8-)

the global search and replace with grep allows me to spend more time on the
tennis court.

sftp, git and project support, applescriptability (and guys like chris
stone), no crashes, small footprint with big impact... what's not to like?

i first met them (and got bbedit) at macworld, long ago in another
galaxy the experience has been consistent and ever better.

bbedit is the reason i wake up every morning, look out my window, and see
this:

Re: Change CSS formatting

2015-04-11 Thread blinde
kathy -

the simplest answer to your question is 'no, not really... but kind of'.
css files are text files... which means that you're a simple search and
replace away from anything you want.

have you tried bbedit's css tools? how was what you got different from what
you wanted?

'one particular style is most useful to me' may be a true statement, but is
frustratingly unhelpful for anyone wanting to help. how are we supposed to
know what that is or what you want to accomplish without an example?

if it's just that you like your css params indented, you could do that with
a regex or command + } (or ]).

more info, please.

The problem with CTFD is that there is no way to change the Ignore Spaces
settings, like there is for FD. Yes, I know that if I go into FD and change
things the way I want them and hit the Compare button, those settings will
stick for CTFD, but that is very inconvenient. It also seems to me that
this is confusing from a UI perspective, since the settings used by CTFD
are not associated with its menu entry.

 Hey There,

I think I agree with you on this one.

Unlike in the 'sort lines' command vs the 'sort lines' dialog you cannot
open the 'find differences' dialog, change settings, dismiss the dialog,
and have those new settings work for 'compare front two documents'.

Does anyone know of a way around this? I've tried various modifier key
combinations, and can't get CTFD to show the settings dialog.

This is what the manual says:

Performs a Find Differences on the two frontmost text documents, using
the same settings currently active for the Find Differences command.

I think you should contact support with a feature request. Bare Bones
 Software sup...@barebones.com javascript:

In the meantime you can script it to your liking:

 try
 tell *application* BBEdit
*compare* *window* 1 against *window* 2 options ¬
 {case sensitive:true, ignore curly quotes:true, ignore extra spaces:true,
 ignore
 leading spaces:true, ignore trailing spaces:true}
 end tell
 on error eMsg number eNum
 set {c, s} to {return, --}
 set e to s c Error: eMsg c s c Error Number: eNum
 c s
 *beep*
 *display dialog* e
 end try

If you want more flexibility you can do something like this:

set compOpts to {All Options: false, case sensitive:true, ignore
curly quotes:true, ignore extra spaces:true, ignore leading
 spaces:true, ignore trailing spaces:true}

 tell *application* BBEdit

tell me to set compOpts to *choose from list* compOpts ¬
with title Compare Front Two Documents with prompt ¬
Select Options default items (*items* 2 thru -1 of compOpts) ¬
 multiple selections allowed true ¬
 with empty selection allowed

 end tell

Note that this script only demonstrates using choose-from for options and
doesn't flesh-out the logics of actually using the items returned.

to project, or not to project - HOW is the question

2012-12-06 Thread blinde
gang -

i just went from 10.1.3 to 10.5

10.5 changes the way sites work. in 10.1.3 i just opened whichever client's
files i wanted to work with, and could preview rendered php pages using my
global development site.

in 10.5, as far as i can tell, sites are project-specific. in other words,
the only way i can preview a properly rendered php page is to make a
project for that client, and work with the project by double-clicking on
the project file which will then show me all of the files in their folder
(essentially a duplicate of the htdocs or public_html folder on their
server).

i'm fine doing that (even though i now have to create separate projects for
some 70+ active websites)...

here's my question:

can one of you brainiacs suggest a way i might script/automate STEP 3 of
the following:

   1. go to my Sites folder
   2. click on a client folder to see the files therein (i'm in column view)
   3. double-click on the file i want to work with and have it look to see
if there is a project file... if there is, open the file in the project...
which gives me sites and all kinds of other project goodness

something applescript? automator?

thanks,
bruce

p.s.: if there's a way to have one overall dev site that will run any and
all loose files through the one php engine, that would be workable, as
well. thx.

No. The browser only renders the document sent to it. PHP is a server side
processing language; on the Mac, the PHP interpreter runs through Apache. If
you drag and drop files to your browser, they are NOT being processed by the
Apache/PHP combination, and thus will not be rendered as HTML, but rather as
plain text files containing PHP code. There is no going through localhost
-- localhost is just the name that Apache responds to on your local machine.

You might check out VirtualHostX (http://clickontyler.com/virtualhostx/).
This application provides a graphical front end to Apache's Virtual Host
functionality, and might help you do something similar to what you want to
do. As far as I know, however, you will NOT be able to drag and drop raw PHP
files to a web browser and have them render through Apache/PHP
 automagically.

Re: BBEDIT Support folder is not created

2012-02-07 Thread blinde
spencer -

why are you asking about the scripts folder in a thread about multiple
dev environments and localhosts?

twice now i've logged in to see if anyone answered my question, and
thought that someone had replied... only to find out the posts had
nothing to do with this thread, or my question.

please start your own thread about your own topic, for best results
and to help keep threads on topic.

as for the manual saying there are scripts supplied by bbedit, the
manual i just downloaded says:

Scripts
[Global, Local]
BBEdit will automatically create this folder if it does not exist. The
Scripts folder may contain AppleScript files, Automator workflows,
text factories, and executable Unix files (scripts). Items placed in
this folder will appear in the Scripts menu (left), and you may place
items within subfolders (up to four levels deep) to organize them.
You may run these items from the Scripts menu, the floating Scripts
palette, or via assigned key equivalents. (You may use the Menus
Shortcuts preference panel to assign a key equivalent to any item in
the Scripts menu.)
BBEdit runs such items by simply loading the item and calling it
directly, without providing any inputs. (Naturally, AppleScript
scripts and Automator actions may query BBEdit for more information,
and Unix scripts may obtain information from the environment variables
that BBEdit sets, while text factories will use their stored target
list if any.)
The first time you launch BBEdit 10, it will copy all of your existing
Unix scripts into this folder.
If you are upgrading from a version prior to 8.5, you must instead
manually move or copy over any customized scripts that you wish to
preserve. Note also that scripts written for use with such older
versions of BBEdit may no longer work. (Please see Chapters 13 and 14
for more details and tips on modifying your existing AppleScripts and
Unix filters scripts.)

what manual are you looking at, and what specifically does it say to
make you think there are scripts provided with the app?

again, please continue the scripts folder discussion in a new thread.

thanks,
bruce

lame-o needs help with preview sites

2012-02-06 Thread blinde
guys -

i've got my environment set up so i can work in php using bbedit, and
then just hit control+command+p to preview any file i'm working on in
the browser of my choice. the php renders just fine... as long as the
file is anywhere under ~Sites.

i often end up with php files on my desktop, and want to be able to
open them in bbedit, make a quick tweak or not, and then preview as
above... with the php rendering just as if it were under ~Sites.

under 'setup', i currently have:

 site name: dev
 server url: localhost/
 path on server: ~blinde/
 default page: index.php
 addressing: automatic
 local site root: blinde-Sites
 use local preview server: yes

this works.

i made a copy, called dev 2, and tried variations on the 'path on
server' setting, to new avail.

i want to be able to preview correctly rendered php pages located
under ~Sites AND off my desktop.

how do i do this?

more info:

  HOSTS FILE
  7 127.0.0.1 localhost
  8 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
  9 ::1 localhost
 10 fe80::1%lo0 localhost

 14 file:///Users/blinde/Desktop/

apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf file

 30 ServerName localhost
 31 /VirtualHost
 32
 33 VirtualHost *:80
 34 DocumentRoot /Users/blinde/Desktop/
 35 ServerName localhost
 36 /VirtualHost

am i even mucking about in the right place?

again, i want to be able to preview correctly rendered php pages
located under ~Sites AND off my desktop. i definitely want to be able
to do this via bbedit, but also wouldn't mind being able to drag-and-
drop a php file from the desktop into an open browser window such that
the page gets rendered correctly (ok, that last one isn't a bbedit
thing...)

how do i do this?

idiot-proof instructions and/or pointers to applicable tutorials would
be appreciated!

thanks,
bruce

applescript?

i use two applescripts to toggle my bbedit (and other app) window
sizes and locations, depending on whether i am at my desk and plugged
into my big monitor, or mobile somewhere with just my laptop screen.

when i get back to my office and plug in, i run this:

tell application BBEdit to activate
tell application System Events
tell process BBEdit
repeat with x from 1 to (count windows)
set this_name to (name of window x) as text
--display dialog this_name
if this_name is not Utilities and this_name is not
HTML Tools
and this_name is not Windows and this_name is not Entities and
this_name is not CSS and this_name is not Find and this_name is
not Multi-File Search and this_name is not BBEdit Preferences and
this_name is not System Events and this_name is not Clippings then
tell window x
set position to {11, 21}
set size to {1345, 1121}
end tell
end if
end repeat
tell menu bar 1
tell menu bar item Window
tell menu Window
tell menu item Workspace
tell menu Workspace
click menu item
default
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell

it resizes my windows (leaving room for dragthing) and selects the
right workspace.

there is a corresponding script with different settings for when i'm
mobile.

you could set a keyboard equivalent to each script, yes?

For example, I am writing a document full screen within BBedit.  Then
I decide I need to type something into the document based upon what I
am observing in another window or application, so I would unzoom my
BBedit window to about 10 percent of the screen size and type what I
need and then zoom it back up again to full screen size.  The problem
is that I presently have to manually decrease the size of the window
with the mouse and that window size preference is lost once I exit the
document.  I would like two (2) defaults -- zoom would be 100% and
 unzoom would be 10%.

Any ideas to have these two defaults survive closing the file and/or
 closing the application?

jamie -

i appreciate the links, but i've already visited them and more.

i've got php running just fine... as long as a .php file is anywhere
in my Sites folder (where i keep separate folders for all my client
websites), and i preview it using LOCALHOST, all is well. the page
gets rendered, life is good.

i guess a better phrased question would be: when i drag and drop a
file from the desktop to an open browser window, it shows as file:///
Users/blinde/Desktop/index.php.

i want it to go through localhost, so the php gets rendered.

maybe some kind of .htaccess re-write trick? is there a way to 'trick'
the browser into doing this, when 'Sites' and 'Desktop' are folders
that exist at the same level in my home directory?

help, mr. wizards!

if the former, you could just 'save' or 'save as...' from there.

I like this idea, too. It's a small step in a very interesting

As far as I know the uppercasing of tags was a convention borrowed from SGML.
But you're absolutely right about the case-insensitivity. I still know more

HTML5 backtracks from that, but they're still not down with all this crazy

If Barebones were ever to make it possible to have upper case tags

been sedated.  Do you write your validated code in HTML 4.01 (1999)

When I first started coding HTML in 1992, tags were uppercase. In fact, you

As of HTML 4 (1999), the W3C (the group that dictates HTML standards)
recommended lowercase tags; HTML5 and XHTML require lowercase tags to
validate. There's nothing stopping you from using uppercase tags in HTML, but
if validation is needed, you shouldn't.

 I hope that clarifies.

'restore/select workspace' bug + workaround

2011-09-28 Thread blinde
release 3077 broke the ability to restore saved workspaces.

this has been a problem for me as i switch back and forth between my
home office with big monitor, and being on the road; manually
resetting palettes and windows has been a drag.

the problem has been reported and confirmed as a bug, and queued up
for fixing.

in the meantime, patrick woolsey has provided a work-around:

Due to this bug, BBEdit will not reposition any palettes which are
already visible when you choose a workspace; however, it can still
open and then position palettes. So, for example, if you have two
workspaces: Home and Away, you can Option-click any palette's close
box to close all open palettes, then choose the desired workspace,
e.g. Home, and BBEdit should open that workspace's palettes at their
saved locations; just repeat this process after moving to the other
location.

life is good again,
hope this helps others,
thanks again to patrick and team,
bruce

When I code HTML in BBEdit, the process for adding a URL anchor to
some text used to be really simple. It was select the anchor text, hit
the keystroke, paste in the URL from the clipboard. If the anchor text
was a URL it was even simpler because BBEdit would magically detect it
and fill it in for me. Then it was just select, keystroke, return.

In version 10, the dialog that shows up makes me type in 'href' and
won't auto-detect that I have a URL as my selection. I can see the
potential for these in-line editors, but I feel like some basic
functionality has been removed and I'm hoping it's just something I've
 missed in the preferences.

Any ideas? Thanks. This sounds like a nice group of people.

very cool feature... search in document's folder

2011-09-07 Thread blinde
99% of my searches are within client folders/sites, within my Sites
folder.

typically, a client emails a question or problem. i will, of course,
not have the slightest recollection of what i did or how i did it. i
will start researching my response by opening the main controller doc
that contains all of the site logic and functions, and searching
around.

i'll find a clue, and then want to search throughout the site for
where a variable or param is used in other places.

i emailed the guys with a feature idea/request to have multi-file
search automagically add the document's folder to the list of possible
targets, and patrick pointed out that search-search in document's
folder already exists. (doh!)

so... for multi-file searching, i've assigned command + shift + f to
'search in document's folder', rather than multi-file search, where i
had to manually select (or add) the desired target search folder.

if i need to search elsewhere, i just uncheck the one checked folder.

bbedt f-ing rocks.

unhappy about 'algin'

2011-08-19 Thread blinde
i'm kind of tweaked that bbedit still puts 'algin' instead of 'align'
in some of my tags... especially when i'm typing quickly.

i thought this would have been fixed in 10.

It crosses my mind that you are allowing completion to use the system
dictionary, which could easily include the word algin.
 See:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alginic_acid
You can disable this behavior by going to Preferences-Editing-Include
dictionary words in completion list and deselect it (remove the checkmark).
Without a more detailed explanation of the behavior you are seeing (in what
context BBEdit is inserting algin vs. align) it is hard to say for sure what
you can do and whether or not it is a bug or an intended behavior.
 Ted Stresen-Reuter

ted -

the detailed steps to reproduce the bug are:

1. type 'algin' instead of 'align', because you're moving too fast
2. notice the error (or not)
3. blame others (in this case, bbedit 10)

the error code returned is: PEBCAK (problem exists between chair and
keyboard)

does this additional information help clarify the issue?

'using terms from application BBEdit'?!?? 'end postmenuselect?!? how
do you know this stuff?!?!??!? 8-)

anyway, i use the keyboard shortcut to preview in (mostly) safari...
i.e., a browser instead of bbedit.

i created the script, but it didn't work at first. i looked at it
again, and thought ah ha... i need to change the 'if' clause to read
like the menu... i.e., 'Preview in Safari (5.1)'... which did not
work.

i went to the prefs to double-check what the keyboard shortcut thought
it was attached to, and prefs said only 'Preview'.

i changed the script name to Markup•Preview.scpt, changed the 'if'
check to look for just 'Preview', and life is fantastic.

you rock.

thank you for your help and expertise!

bruce

p.s.: i used to think that javascript was fragile voodoo, and
applescript was obscure voodoo. i still feel the same way about
applescript... when it works, it rocks... but it's the weirdest, most
inconsistent language i've even come across. i'm sure glad it makes
sense to you!

 Hey Bruce,

 Script Name: Markup•Preview in BBEdit.scpt

 Script Path: ~/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/Menu Scripts/Markup•Preview
 in BBEdit.scpt

This should save every time you use the keyboard shortcut or select the menu
 item.

Let me know if it doesn't do what you want.

Props to Rich and Patrick; the example script in the manual wasn't hard to

also... the manual references documentShouldSave: called when the

documentShouldSave when previewing a document? is this a viable hook
for what i want to accomplish and if so, how would i use it?

confusement/question: default window size and 'arrange'

2011-08-03 Thread blinde
i wanted to express my appreciation to the team for grace under
pressure as they deal with a number of complex issues.

i think the issues drop (roughly) into two buckets: functionality and
usability. many of the posts here are about usability... this is
different, that is different, etc. some changes can be absorbed, and
some will always feel like losses... but bbedit still rocks.

i have a usability issue that drives me nuts... in a very small way. i
mentioned it to the guys, and patrick said they would look at it for a
future release. i wanted to find out if it bugs anyone else, and how
they deal with it.

i run bbedit with my main window on the left, and palettes on the
right... on a 30 monitor.

i set my default window to the exact size i want, and hit 'save
default project window'. i have 'show open documents' default set to
YES.

when i launch the app, the 'open documents' list on the left blows out
the window to the right from where i set it, under my palettes. in
other words, the window is now left-aligned where i set it, but the
'open documents' list blows out the right side the additional width of
the 'open documents' list.

if i select window-arrange, the main window goes right to where i set
it.

so... 'save default project window' doesn't appear to respect and/or
account for the additional width of the 'open documents' list, and yet
ARRANGE does.

i have now set a keyboard shortcut of command+9 to do window-
arrange... but kind of think i shouldn't have to do something
additional to set up my workspace every time i open the app.

here's my question, in a parts:

- is it reasonable that i would have to do something additional to
set up my workspace once i've 'save(d) default project window'? why
not have the app do a default 'arrange' when it launches... especially
if there's only one document being opened?

- shouldn't 'save default project window' notice whether 'show
open documents' is YES/NO, and act accordingly?

this is admittedly a minor issue... if it's just MY issue, i will keep
hitting command+9.

comments welcome,
thanks again to all for the app that helps me do what i do, and pay
the mortgage.
bruce

the latest was that my grep patterns were not showing up.

after much trial and error, i discovered that the Grep Patterns.xml

~/Library/Preferences/com.barebones.bbedit.PreferenceData

WAS the correct file... but that 10 now appears to be looking in:

~/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/Setup

which is fine, now that i've figured it out.

so... i'm guessing that Application Support is the correct location,
as newly added patterns survive removal of existing prefs.

here's what i'm seeing:

.py docs have the correct icon
.txt docs have the correct icon
.pl docs have the correct icon
.growlRegDict docs have the correct icons

nothing else does.

using 'get info' to 'open with...' to another program correctly
switches all icons... but switching 'open with...' back to bbedit just
switches back to the results reported above.

why was this NOT an issue with 9, and now an issue with 10?

sigh.

things about 10 that are driving me batty... help?

2011-07-29 Thread blinde
here are some random walls i keep slamming into with 10... any
suggestions, tips, and/or workarounds would be MOST welcome!

=
it now takes twice as many clicks as it used to to add attributes to
images tags

old way:
click in height field, add value
and/or
click in width field, add value
and/or
click in border field, add value

in 10:
click in attribute name field, type first letter (i.e.,
'w'), tab
to or click in value field, add value
repeat 2 more times for height and border

i.e., 4 steps required instead of 2 for EACH item

how does this help me? yes, some of those tags are optional...
but
best practices is still to include them, yes? and, even if not, MY
practice is to include them. is there not a compromise solution or
workaround?

yes, i can 'update document images' at any point... but this
seems
like an added step. i REALLY miss being able to see... and the ability
to quickly edit multiple, common params.

=
i can't tell you how many times in the last many years i've clicked on
the 'preview' palette button to preview my page in the last chosen
browser... and yet now, i have to click and then select a browser
before i can see it. why the behavior change? why doesn't it just
preview in the last selected browser? since i could always click and
hold to select a different browser, why now opt for only one of the
two behaviours?

the manual says Some palette buttons are actually popup menus.
Clicking a popup menu button while holding down the Command key
invokes that menu’s last-selected menu option. but this does NOT work
for me.

yes, i can command+control+p to preview in the last browser i
previewed in... so why does the html palette button no longer provide
this functionality?

the manual also says Try pressing the Option key and watch how the
palette changes. By holding down Option as you click, you can force
many buttons that normally display a settings dialog to use their
previous settings instead... but NONE of my v10 palettes change.

=
i really want to adjust the palette sensitivity... i have to very
deliberately click on palette buttons to get them to work. if i click
too quickly, they do not respond until the next click. suggestions
welcome.

=
saved workspaces do NOT honor window width when toggling 'open
documents' on and off. if i open one document, i do NOT get the 'open
documents' listing on the left, even after trying 'defaults write
com.barebones.bbedit AutoShowFileList -bool YES' (recommended fix from
barebones... still doesn't work)

=
in all of the attribute editor windows that come up when clicking on
an html palette button, i can do everything i need to by clicking...
EXCEPT cancel. for that, i have to type, when to this point i've been
clicking. can't i have a 'cancel' button to click on?
