[ANN] BBEdit 12.0.2 (400035) pre-release

2017-11-13 Thread Rich Siegel

Good { morning, afternoon, evening },

We're working on an update to BBEdit 12.0 to address a few
recently reported issues.

Note that this is a _pre-release_ version. The intent is to fix
bugs and address areas of improvement based on what our
customers have reported. However, since the software is at this
point not fully tested, there _may_ be bugs and regressions.

If this prospect makes you nervous, then sticking with the
public release versions is your best course of action. Nobody
will be offended if you choose to do so; you're under no
obligation to install and use anything but a public release. :-)

Following is a summary of changes since the most recent
pre-release build. Complete change notes for all of the
pre-release builds in this cycle are available here: .

The change notes are organized into additions, changes, and
fixes, and are annotated where appropriate with case numbers. So
if you recognize a number corresponding to a support case that
was opened for you, you can now verify that it's been fixed
correctly. Please take the time to review the changes before
using the new build -- it'll be worth your time.

One final note: If you run into a bug in a pre-release version,
PLEASE DO NOT REPORT THE BUG TO THE LIST. This includes asking
about whether others have seen the same problem. Instead, please
send a bug report to and we will deal
with it there. This will help us keep the list discussion on
topic and productive for all list members.

Fixes

* [NFR] Fixed bug in which the modal progress panel was doing too
much work in the time before the panel became visible, and did
not give enough time to the main event loop, which compromised
application responsiveness.

* [NFR] Fixed a bug which would cause the application to become
unresponsive while reopening a large number of FTP/SFTP browser
windows and remote documents at startup.

* [NFR] Fixed a collection of concurrency bugs in the SFTP innards
which would cause strange behavior (stalls, crashes, timeouts)
during heavy SFTP activity, such as when reopening a large number
of SFTP documents at startup.

* [NFR] Fixed a regression in which contextual-menu choices (such
as Copy) for inactive selections would operate on the active
window rather than the window for which the contextual menu was
invoked.

* [NFR] [348602] Fixed a bug in which using a symlink or alias for
the `DefaultFilter_` preview filter would not resolve
the alias correctly.

* [NFR] Reversed the previous change made to address [145820],
since it doesn't really solve the problem correctly.

* [NFR] [348053] Fixed regression in which clicking in the
selection range of an editing window, or on a selected item in
the sidebar, while the application was in the background, would
bring it to the foreground but with the front window remaining
inactive.

* [348475] Fixed a bug in which completions for predefined
selectors provided by the CSS/SCSS module would be out of order,
leading to unexpected behavior in the completion panel.

* [348197] Windows are once again listed on the application's Dock
menu. Windows containing multiple documents will have those
documents displayed in a sub menu for the window's item.

* [347921] Fixed a bug which caused the tick marks used in vertical
scroll bars to be drawn in an inverted coordinate system
(and thus

in the wrong place in the scrollbar track).

* Made a change to the startup progress mechanics so that the
progress panel doesn't appear unless the application takes more
than a couple of seconds to restore its saved state. The
application is also a better citizen during state restoration.

* [347147] Fixed bug in which disconnecting from an SFTP
connection would never take less than two seconds, which made
processes like reopening a lot of SFTP files at application
startup take much longer than they should have.

* Made a change to SFTP I/O to improve performance and CPU
efficiency when waiting for data to arrive.

* [348388] Added search keywords to the Editing preferences for
the pinch-to-zoom control.

* Made a change to display the name of each remote file that is
being reopened at startup, rather than its entire URL (which
usually got truncated).

* In order to work around a crash in the OS (Radar 35052088),
BBEdit will no longer submit recently opened items to the
system-wide "Recent Items" list that appears on the Apple and
Dock menus. We regret any inconvenience this may cause, and hope
that it is strictly temporary.

*   [348483] The "Unix
