Black frost

2002-07-27 Thread Allane67
Hello to all
Just back from the Nth coast of NSW where frosts have "burnt"almost all of the crops. So bad that the term black frost was used.
I roamed all over and found practically every cultivated crop,be it banana, peas, beans not to mention pasture totally browned of,damaged from cell rupturing.
All except three acres of garlic I came across.
Can garlic withstand constant frosts?

Re: Certification

2002-07-03 Thread Allane67
Hi Christiane
I understand that 10acres won't be enough land to produce a income. My mention of 10acres was in context of having around 10acres of irrigation. The total arable acreage is approx 70.
Yes factored in a washing facility for the shed, developed from last summers Zucchini
crop grown on a neighbours farm.(working towards chilling the water more after the second wash).
As for the implements, as I mentioned before Mic,a bean and snow pea grower and Chris who crops garlic, lucherne, corn and cucumber have all I need for the property in very close proximity. For my part I have two poly tunnels with all the bells and whistle's
from which I can raise seedling transplants for them. This summer we hope to plant out 2,500 Watermelon on Chris,s land.
As for the soil samples this month I intend to grid the 70 acres and with a back hoe dig pits to profile the soil layers.Soil samples from the grid positions will then go to UWSH for analysis.I can e-mail you off list with the results.
As for the mineral rock dusts I need more data in regard to your comment.

Thank you very much for your help and Gils

Certification

2002-07-02 Thread Allane67
Hello to all!.
Thank you all for a very informative group forum.
I am at the moment in the process of buying 98 acres of land that has had only been used for horse and cattle agistment for the last 7yrs and before that nothing.
Can this forum give me some advise as to how to go about certification?.
Should I approach an Organic certification body and have the acreage go through their process?,then attempt Biodynamic?.
Are there any more questions I should ask the land agent?.
I will be contacting the various organisations here in Australia of course but before that I would like to have some of this lists wisdom first.

Best Regards

David:Thanks for the advice.Yes I will be contacting a certifying body however which one?.Are they all much of a muchness?.
I have spoken to the neighbours and they have said the place has had only horses and cattle on it for the last 7 odd yrs. Before that there was a small dairy.
I intend to grow a range of vegetables and citrus which leads me to another question.Should I start contacting agents / merchants for the produce?.

Re: Certification

Gil:thanks for the feedback.
In answer to your considerations have done most of them myself.I managed to get two years of study under my belt at UWSH,in Hort/Sci before economic pressure forced me to go back to the work force.
I am very sure that the land is suitable and in addition I have two conventional farmers who are willing to lend a hand,ie their tractor and implements and their local knowledge in exchange for my experience.(I helped one farmer establish 4aces of garlic in Feb).
As far as plant and equipment is concerned $20,000 Aud will see me with a packing/equipment shed and cool room.I have all the irrigation for 10 acres and only need a pump house.
I would like to add that the conventional farmers took to the BD way of thinking(some of it.I haven't told them of the esoteric side to it yet),with real enthusiasm I feel there is a real opportunity here to improve the village community and the sustainability of other farms in the area.
Your mention of Mineral rock dusts,I would be very interrested in your contacts.
