Can you advise when that segment will air? Given the increasing popularity of the breed, and the undesireable consequences that go along with that...the Bernese community is anxious to see what material MSL presents to the public. Hopefully it will go beyond the beauty of the breed and discuss things like the BARC organization (which rescues BMDs from exploitive situations like puppy mill auctions, www.barcinc.com) and responsible dog ownership. AKC CHF Fundraiser - There is STILL TIME.......
The drawing for the two gorgeous paintings that Willem Wijnberg painted for our AKC CHF Fundraiser to fight canine cancer will be on Thanksgiving Day. Both of these Berner paintings are just gorgeous and once you see them you are going to want to make a donation to help fight Cancer and to try to win one of these paintings. The first painting (14 x 14 inches) is of Yasper, the father of Willem's Berner, Dingo, who died from Malignant Histiocytosis. The second painting (12 x 10 inches) is of Jean Cheesman's puppy, Sam (from England) who died about 3 years ago from cancer at the young age of six years. Here is the website with all of the directions for entering the drawing: http://www.overthefence.com/raffle/CHF/ Thank you, Karen Pickel, for once again making such a great website. If you haven't visited the website, please take a minute to check it out. You'll be happy you did!!! PLEASE support this very important fundraiser. This is something that everyone can support. If you know anyone who has lost a Berner to Malignant Histiocytosis, then you know the heartbreak that they have experienced. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to eradicate this terrible disease by supporting this study through our donations? You can help. It is NOT TOO LATE to send your checks to me. Please send me an e-mail at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] and tell me how much you are sending and how you would like me to distribute your tickets. I will cover your check and put your tickets into the drawing, even if your check doesn't arrive in time for the drawing. This is a fundraise that is vital to the lives of our current Berners and our future Berners. Won't you please be part of the solution. I am hoping to get an avalanch of checks over the next week. Winston is waiting to be able pull a whole cartload of checks to the house from all of you generous Berner lovers. We can do it. Thanks in advance for your generosity!! http://www.overthefence.com/raffle/CHF/ Joye, I also found out that Matthew Breen (who is also working on this study in North Carolina in concert with the lab at Fred Hutchinson) is known to the Berner community in the UK. It may have even been his influence that helped target the Bernese malignant histiocytosis as the best cancer to research in order to find better ways to detect chromosome aberrations associated with canine cancers. Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery
IMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY Don't take this the wrong way, but for the longest time now, I've been trying to imitate my dog. Not his look, which is furry and black. Not his walk, which, as with most of a waddle. And not his tail. I don't need a tail. I have enough trouble buckling my pants as it is Also, I can live without his bathroom habits, which can be summed up this way: Tree or bush? Tree or bush? Aw, how about right here on the grass. No, what I admire about my dog is his fascination with the simple routine of life. Every day for him is like boarding the space shuttle. For example: In the morning, I tumble out of bed, grumble, yawn, open the door, and TA-DA! There he is, the canine answer to Richard Simmons. He is so worked up, he doesn't know which way to go, toward me or away from me. So he does both. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! he seems to pant. It's morning, and I'm gonna eat! Never mind that he has eaten every morning since he was born. Or that he's had the same food every morning since he was born, and that was 7 years ago. Never mind. He pulls me downstairs and waits breathlessly as I scoop yet another helping of boring brown nuggets into his bowl. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! Food, food, food! I yawn. Three minutes later, he is off the food thing and into a new obsession: going out. Again, he runs forward and backward. I'm going out! I'm going out! Is this great or what? Never mind that going out has not changed one bit since we've lived here. He is so thrilled by the notion of exit that he almost bites the doorknob off. He bolts into the backyard as if heading for Tomorrowland with a sack full of E tickets. I slouch and yawn again. The great outdoors! Then comes the bathroom routine, which I already have described. Humans deal with these functions begrudgingly. Not my dog. It's a real thrill for him. He scouts for the perfect spot as if looking for beachfront real estate. Tree or bush? Tree or bush? And I don't have that many trees. Then, once his business is taken care of -- and I make a mental note where we're going to have to shovel come summer -- he is off the going out obsession and onto a new one: going back in. It doesn't matter than he was in just two minutes ago. Things have changed! Things have changed! he seems to pant. I gotta get in there! I gotta check it out! Hurry up, hurry up! When I open the door, he bolts in, races back and forth -- looking for space aliens, I suppose -- and when he doesn't find any, he isn't disappointed. Instead, he snarls at some ratty toy he's played with for months, throws it into the air with his teeth, and watches it and Look at that! he seems to say. It goes up, it comes down! As I make a cup of coffee, he jumps up to watch. Whatcha doing? Whatcha doing? Coffee, huh? That's amazing! He then clamps onto my leg and does a dance that, were it the early '50s, I might call the Hootchie Coo. I am not sure what he gets out of this --Oh boy, a leg! Oh boy, a leg! -- but he seems to be having a better time than many of the dates I've had. When I disengage and disappear behind a door, he lies down outside and waits for me to come out again. If it is only 30 seconds later, he will still react as if I were a released hostage. The sunny side. Now, my dog does not work. He does not pay taxes. He does not create anything new (unless you consider the bushes outside). But he also doesn't need clothes, doesn't covet cars or jewelry, and doesn't care about houses, as long as he can find a sunny spot on the floor and lie there for a few hours. Meanwhile, I am bored with my same routine. Getting up is a drag. I can't get excited about breakfast. And going out then coming back only makes me wonder how many flies I've let in. So I'm trying to imitate my dog. I'm trying to find wonder in the everyday. After all, when you think about it, it is pretty remarkable that you open your eyes each morning. And since every few hours you get to quench your hunger, well, that's a thrill, when you consider the alternative. So while I can't match my dog's drool, I am trying to match his zeal. Don't worry. If you come to visit, I will not clamp on your leg and do the Hootchie Coo. On the other hand, that sunny spot on the floor looks pretty tempting. * The information transmitted is intended solely for the individual or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material. Berners and Newfs/ was Looking for Breeder
- Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am looking for a breeder. I used to live in Colorado and had talked to many people with BMD's. After researching quite a bit, I feel that this is the companion I am looking for. I used to have a Newf, she was a great companion. Although others didn't appreciate her slobber, her good traits more than made up for that inconvenience with me. In talking with a couple of owners they reccomended I research out the BMD. As owner of both a Newf and a Berner, let me gently point out that while they are both loving and clingy, they are VERY different dogs indeed when it comes to the point of it: living with them. If you really, really enjoyed the Newf personality and want the same basic thing in a smaller package, you probably won't get that with the average Berner. In my experience, these are trends, and individual dogs will fall closer and further from these averages: Berners are more agile and energetic than even a high energy Newf like my Nessie, so they require a lot of exercise. There is no living with my Mic unless he gets a serious activity period on a regular basis. I find that as puppies, Berners are more likely to be sharks and eat your hands, arms, and be a little more chew destructive than the average Newf puppy. They are more inclined to temperament problems such as territory aggression and fear aggression; they were farm guardians in the early years and this sharper personality has remained a consistent subset of Berner temperament. Shy personalities are also not uncommon. Do a search on the Berner archives for some recent shyness and temperament issues and you'll see what I mean when you see how many people talked about their shy dogs and what they were trying to do to solve the problems. I believe while both suffer from health problems, Berners have a slight edge in terms of more health issues. They require similar amounts of grooming, they have a similar love of their families, and they are both funny, engaging, and endearing companions. I am not trying to dissuade you from a Berner! They are excellent companions for a variety of families. However, they are really not particularly Newf-like in my opinion. Lliira always was getting ear infections; she also has airborne plant allergies which render her completely miserable from late August until the first frost. Understanding HD/ED Ratings
Good Morning All!! I have what I hope is a simple question. I thought I knew what all the different ratings were for HD and ED and I'm finding out real fast that I know very little. What does HD Normal mean? OFA grades HD as either excellent, Good, Fair, Borderline, Mild, Moderate, or Severe. However I have seen some breeders post the HD grade for their dogs as Normal. For elbows, is it general that most breeders will state their dogs are ED clear if they are not graded? OFA will only grade ED if it is abnormal and therefore will not give a grade for ED that shows no signs of ED. Something else I just noticed looking at some of the pedigrees from Europe. HD A and ED 0/0. That is probably the equivalent of HD Excellent and ED clear here in the US. Question with regard to this. If you have a dog with HD D and ED 0/0 would you consider that the equivalent of HD Borderling and ED clear here in the US? This is just really more for my education and trying to make sure I have been reading the HD/ED on the pedigrees correctly. I think I have, but somehow when I saw Normal I realized maybe I missed something. For the benefit of some of the PPOs out there...what are your recommendations to watch out for in terms of looking at HD/Ed on a pedigree. If there is in a pedigree, 1 dog with HD - Moderate and all other HD Good and Fair, should they discount that dog because of the HD Moderate in the pedigree? Should they look for pedigrees with all Excellent, Fair, and Good? Since the risk really is with the PPO who is looking for a puppy, what would you caution them against? My hunch is to say, in the US, HD Excellent, Good, and in Europe HD A and B. And of course Elbows clear in the US and ED 0/0 in Europe. I apologize ahead of time if this is a topic that has already been discussed, and if so, please point me to the digest this is on and I can go research it myself. :-) Thanks, Karyn Waugh _ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail
ADMIN: Plain Text versus HTML
HTML, or hyper-text markup language, is what allows us to post with colors, underlines, italics, and all of the special text editing techniques that we have available to us. The Berner-L cannot handle it properly, nor can everyone's email software. Plain text is what is required to post to the Berner-L so that all of us can enjoy all of the posts. When you post in HTML some people will see your message, some others will see the message along with an error message, and some of us will ONLY see that error message. It seems to have something to do with the way that the List Proc sends out the messages and the way your email software displays what it gets. Anyway, please learn how to post in plain text. If you are on AOL 7.0 or later, I can tell you right now that you will have to go to www.aol.com to post that way. AOL helpfully removed the ability to post in plain text from their recent releases. Other email software often has an option for HTML, Rich Text, or Plain Text formats. Please select plain text as your default for the List. My [EMAIL PROTECTED] address I use with MS Outlook. When I recieve an HTML email and then reply to it, my reply is in HTML. I have to switch it to plain text. I do not know all of the different email software out there, and I can't tell each of you how to post in HTML. But I'll be happy to try to help you figure it out! If you aren't sure, then send me email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll let you know if it's in HTML or not. I know of one person that is posting in plain text, but error messages are still generated. I have no idea what is causing this, and can only guess that the email is being treated as an attachment somehow - also a no-no. In case you're wondering, the scrubbing software at the List Proc that causes this issue was put in place to stop the viruses we were getting so many of last year. That part seems to have worked just perfectly! Re: chronic ear problems
Hi Carol I can't speak form personal experience but one of my friend's Berners used to suffer mercilessly from chronic ear problems. For years on end. Like you, she exhausted the whole antibiotic-drops- ear salves- etc- range and although all these things helped for a little while, nothing really cured the problem. UNTIL she heard of a product called THORNIT , which is a powder ( some kind of natural herbal remedy). She absolutely swears by it and everyone else I know who has tried it thinks it's nothing short of miraculous either. Now and then, my friend's Berner's ear still get a bit itchy/gunky and after a couple of doses with this powder the ears look( and smell) just fine. here is a link http://www.championpets.co.uk/ears.htm which might explain the product better. Or, alternatively, you could do a search on www.dogpile.com under the search term Thornit and you'll find lots of info. I have no connection whatsoever with this product, but I have seen first hand how helpful it is. If you can't get it in the USA, I could always send you some! All the best Michaela, Harvey Rupert Devon/UK
Re: Understanding HD/ED Ratings
Hi Karen, I will try to help you with this. There are many pedigrees where you will see dog's with ratings from foreign registries. Most of those system's ratings can be found here: http://www.malinut.com/do/hd.shtml GDC had a hip rating as Normal but it was either EN= Excellent Normal, GN=Good Normal, or AN= Acceptable Normal. FCI rates hips as: A1 = our OFA Excellent A2 = our OFA Good B1= our OFA Fair B2= our OFA Borderline C1 = our OFA Mild Dysplasia C2 = our OFA Mild Dysplasia D1= our OFA Moderate Dysplasia D2 = our OFA Moderate Dysplasia E1 = our OFA Severe Dysplasia E2 = our OFA Severe Dysplasia It is my understanding that whatever the lower hip rating is, that is the rating the dog receives. In some foreign pedigrees you will see something simillar to this: A2/C2 - My understanding of that rating would be left hip graded A-2 (our good) right hip graded C/2 (our mild HD) But, I have asked the Berner-L's new Sweedish friend Cecilia to give me a definitive answer on this as Sweeden now goes by FCI ratings. Switzerland gives: HD Frei = HD Free (compares to our Good Excellent.) I = Fair/Borderline/Mild II = Moderate HD III = Severe HD Sometimes you see HD +/- or HD -/+ That means one or the other hip was affected, one was clear. Some pedigrees you see people have just listed HD- or HD Normal left out the actual grade because they are attempting to make the hip ratings more uniform and easy to read, or the only info they have on the foreign dogs is HD - or HD frei. As far as I can see a dog that has a HD D rating with/without a 1 or 2 would be comparable to our rating of Moderate HD. Hope this is of some help, and if anyone who knows these foreign systems better than I spots any mistakes in their ratings vs ours, please correct me. : ) Bernerly, Mary Jeff Mary Chapdelaine SnoBear Berners [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://snobear.freeyellow.com

Wake Up Call
Michigan, 6:30am Friday morning, four inches of freshly fallen snow. I'm tired yet awake enough to let the dogs - who can hardly contain themselves - outside. I put them out and head for the kitchen and some breakfast. As I munch on my toast I gaze out the kitchen window across the countryside at the freshly fallen snow. The darkness of the early morning is eliminated by the snow covered fields and the trees sparkle. I must admit to myself, that as much as I despise the winter months, I can't help but admire the beauty outside my window. Then, suddenly, WHAM! There's a extremely muddy Berner plastered against the kitchen window smearing mud everywhere! My tea and toast go flying, my heart skipped several beats and I check to see if I wet myself! I scream OFF at the top of my lungs, run to the door where I'm greeted by an extremely wet, muddy, angelic Bueford. Oh no, no, no, not another crater. I slip my coat on over my bathrobe and head outside to survey the area for damage; down spouts are pulled off the house, nothing new there; water bucket upside-down and empty, normal. I walk further along the side of the house to the drive and am stopped dead in my tracks by what I see before me. There in the gravel drive is my husbands parked car covered with four inches of snow and it looks as if something has been trying to dig it up! I look down at Bueford standing beside me, panting hard and covered with the evidence. Oh, he's proud of this one. I scream, NAUGHTY pointing at the trench around the car, what were you thinking, have you totally lost it. All dogs are now in the down position, hanging their heads in shame, as I stand in the driveway ranting and raving. Suddenly, I hear a noise coming from under the car. Oh, for crap sake, The Black Cat is under the car!! I stare back in horror at my beloved Berner boy Bueford - who actually thought he could dig the cat out from under the car!! What's a mother to do. . . - Denise

Griffin has Erlichiosis!
Four days on the list and I'm already asking for help ... My 3 year old intact male, Griffin, was diagnosed today with Erhlichiosis. He had had a very tiny nosebleed, no other symptoms and to be on the safe side, I took him in earlier this week for the vet to check him over. I had had him on a tick repellent, Frontline Vet, but did find the odd tick on him this summer. The results arrived this morning. My vet (I love her for being so smart) has prescribed oral Doxicycline 550 mg/day for 3 weeks. She said that all his other blood work was completely normal, but that he had very high titres for Ehrlichia. I have read through the material at the BMD Health Links site and well, frankly, I'm even more scared now than I was before I read through them. Has anyone on the list had any experience with this? Is there anything else besides the antibiotics that I can give him to help him beat this? Thanks in advance, Cecilia Ståhl Stockholm, Sweden

Re: Dog Food
My question would be is this added to the food or being added because they are using euthanized pets in their food and it's getting into the food through these pets. No it is from euthanized cattle and horses that have been processed for the food. It is not being added by hand. Kelly Weir Michigan http://home.twmi.rr.com/skylinebmd/index.html/hopeindex.htm
RE: AKC CHF Raffle.
Of course, if I know Joye (and I do), then she's probably going to allow procrastinators all next week to get their donations in - I'll bet all you need to do is to let her know that they are on their way!! Joye - mine should be in the mail if you don't have it already!!! Pat Long, a babysat Gabby ( Luther) Berwyn PA

Learning lessons the hard way...
Vicky Whitney wrote -- (No lectures, please, on how I should have been doing this since he was a baby puppy -- I've learned my lesson, and make a solemn oath that I'll do so with the NEXT puppy. Damn, I hate learning lessons the hard way . . . ) Same goes for me! Except that I completely freaked out when I was clipping Mickey's claws at about 7 months and I cut one too short and he started bleeding. So now, even with some counter-conditioning and positive reinforcement and desensitization, he STILL gets very goosey about nail trims. He KNOWS what I'm up to with all that peanut butter and praise. he just looks at me like I think he's stupid or something. Such characters! I'll be interested to hear if anyone has tried an anxiety wrap technique for nail trims. And, next puppy, I'll do things much differently! Catherine in Madison WI Shadow, Mickey, Jenny Canoe

One time (c. 1989) I clipped my bulldog girl's nails and made her bleed...The next time she was fine. But.. even with some counter-conditioning and positive reinforcement and desensitization, *I* still get very goosey about nail trims. I need to be clicker trained! Re: Understanding HD/ED Ratings
This is my understanding of the Swiss system, and I am open to correction! Since 1st January 1992 : HD A = Clear, HD B = Transitional, HD C = Mild, HD D E = Severe and not permitted for breeding. ED 0 = Free (Clear), ED 1 = Light, ED 2 3 = Severe and not permitted for breeding. I think that the FCI system if it is applied by more countries will be a very useful guideline for us to work with. The system used in Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland and Germany (and maybe others) where a breeding value for each dog is assessed and used to work out whether potentially a dog will be likely to be beneficial to the breed is, I believe, very useful. It seems that the countries where the Breed Club has most control over what happens to their breed are being more effective in achieving their objectives. Re: Dog Food
One must read all of the reports as this story of cats and dogs in dog food has been around for a long time. The following is from the FDA report on testing of Pet Foods. Despite suspicions that pentobarbital may come from euthanized dogs and cats from animal shelters, the FDA says DNA tests on the products show no sign of dogs or cats. The same report list three of the foods that tested for Phenobarbital. So one had to read all of the reports at the Government FDA site to get the full story. Not just what NEWS stations want to report. To use the term feed Kibbles is a very broad statement as their are many very good kibbles on the market that pose no threat of any kind to our Dogs or Cats. I do not think the Whole Dog Journal would list the top 10 Dog Foods in the Journal if they felt for one moment that they were dangerous to our Pets.
