Re: Frosty Paws recipe
Here are a couple of recipes my Berners love in the summertime. FROSTY PAWS Dissolve a bouillon cube (beef or chicken) in cup of warm water. Mix in blender or food processor with 2 cups plain yoghurt. Pour into ice cube trays sprayed with PAM. Freeze. PUPSICLES Combine 1 cup plain yoghurt, 1 ripe banana and cup of water in blender or food processor till smooth. Pour into ice cube trays sprayed with PAM. Freeze. For variation add crumbly bits from bottom of dog biscuit box. Cheers! Val Whiteford with Marlee and Tonka near Ottawa, ON, Canada
RE: Eating Goose Poop
Hi Carole, I think Giardia and Blastomycosis (sp) can be carried by fowl. The latter disease is very serious. I would discourage this habit and if necessary keep her on leash. Anytime an older animal suddenly develops a passion for something not previously sought I'd be inclined to do a geriatric wellness test. Rose

I have a couple of these cooling pads and I had a puppy that learned early on that it was cool and would seek it out. The older dogs never seemed to care for it. I think it has to be really hot for them to appreciate the temperature difference. On a word of caution. I did have one of my dogs eat the smaller mat and I had to watch her since the pellets do swell up in the gut. She did get rather large and since the pellets are soft when swollen (rather jelly like) everything did pass. I can see where this could be a problem for young dogs or puppies. Nantucket berners
I wanted to say thank you again to the couple we accosted on Nantucket this weekend. My husband and I were vacationing and needed a berner fix. (our boys have been at granma's for the past three weeks!) We didn't even ask your name! Thanks again for the wet berner leans, Amy and Kent Hutson TN
non-berner rescue
I just wanted to share with the list some pictures of my recent rescue. He is a pure bred GSD from the Mercer County Pound in Celina, OH. Anyone who is interested can do a yahoo search for Mercer County Pound and read up on how horrible this place really is. They just recently stopped their old method of euthanasia, which was placing dogs in a metal box on the back of a pick-up truck and piping in engine exhaust. Anyway, I drove 8 hours (one way), for a total of 16 hours total to save this boy. I am so glad I did, he is a sweet dog. Acts like he has never been in a house though. He is extremely thin (I would guess 20-25 lbs under normal weight), and has some nasty fly bites around his mouth and on his ear tips. If anyone is interested in seeing pictures, I made a very simple website at http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/2210/zane.htm Tina
How accurate is this?
This message was posted on another breed's list and I was wondering how accurate the information is? Do most stud owners actually do this? Is the practice seen more in one area than another? In all my years of breeding and owning stud dogs, I had never heard of the practice of basing a stud fee on number of pups; interesting concept. Hi, In the Bernese Mtn dog world and maybe more other countries, It is a Set fee of say $250 to 400$ for the SERVICE of stud and a per puppy amount aprox 200$. after the litter is born. The per puppy amount usually has a cap on it of say 1200$ to 1500$ if there is an unusually large litter. Re: [BMDCAmembers] How accurate is this?
Anne, The service fee/per puppy stud fee arrangement came to my attention in the early 90's in our breed. Donar v Mutschen, two time national specialty Best in Specialty winner, was a popular stud dog at that time. His owner offered this type of stud fee agreement. There may have been others at or before that time who offered it as well. I like this type of agreement. It limits the investment in a breeding fee for an infertile bitch's owner. It allows a stud owner to refuse a repeat service if new information indicates this is prudent. The up front money required to breed to a deserving stud dog is minimized and the bulk of the fee due closer to the time payment for puppies is being received by the breeder of the litter. Those who have large litters pay large fees and those who have small litters pay small stud fees. IMO it's the fairest of all stud fee agreements. The per-puppy fee IMO opinion should be based on performance of the sire (progeny records his owner can provide) with less used (fewer progeny records) and less decorated (certifications, titles etc) sires commanding smaller fees than highly decorated sires. Unfortunately this is not always the case with owners of dogs without progeny records and/or less decorated males commanding the same per puppy fees as owners of more deserving dogs. 2004 Specialty
Do take a look at the website for the 2004 Specialty! http://www.bmdcaspecialty.org/2004/ Check the schedule of events and look at the names of the people who are chairs for the various events and functions. Are you going as a spectator? Want to learn more about obedience? Volunteer as a steward, you'll see the competition up-close and personal! Want to know what draft or agility is all about? Volunteer as a steward there, you'll see how much fun it can be! Want to meet people and put names to faces? Registration is always a lot of fun. Like to meet people and entice them to spend money? Volunteer at the raffle table! Or one of the regional clubs' Ways and Means tables! There are any number of things that need doin', and any number of volunteers will be needed to do 'em! And if you have any items that you would like to donate to the Raffle, or to the Health Fund Auction, those are always greatly appreciated as well! RE: Animal Stuff for Kids -- Summertime Things
While looking for some free dog shelter software, I happened onto the ASPCA website where I discovered some great stuff on animals (by category) for kids -- www.animaland.org/. There is even a video cartoon on picking up after your pup -- all very cute and informative! Any elementary school teacher or parent looking for things to do this summer) out there (in a previous life, I was a media center specialist), might wish to look this over for ideas for a section on animal welfare/care or things to do on a rainy day. Re: pet health insurance
Congrats on your pending motherhood! ;) You're going to love it! I was actually just about to post the same thing... I got an offer from AKC and was wondering whether it's worth it... whether others have it and find it useful. It's $24/ $42 per month (different plans) and I was curious about it and wonder if it's worth the expense. It's probably worth it just for the peace of mind, but I'd love some experts' opinions since I'm a newbie, too. jenn in VA with Beaumont my angel
Re: [BMDCAmembers] How accurate is this?
Dear Anne, Yes stud fees be done this way and this is not uncommon particularly in Europe. The set up fee or up front fee is paid at the time of breeding - this is basically payment for the stud dog owners work involved in getting the breeding accomplished, and often the general work and responsibility involved in housing the bitch during the breedings. The balance is paid sometime after the arrival of the pups - usually at the time the stud dog owner is requested to sign the litter registration papers. Some breeders have a set fee and others have a fee per puppy whelped and is often capped at the usual stud fee rate minus the up front fee. In this way if the bitch has a very small litter (say three puppies) they are paying less than the normal stud fee and is much fairer to the bitch owner who may be incurring a great amount of expense for that small litter. For my own stud contract I use a bit of both worlds - I have an upfront fee and a balance is paid upon my signing the litter registration papers on a litter of 3 or more puppies - if the bitch does not take the first time or has a litter of less than 3 pups then she can come back and any resulting puppies are assessed at a certain rate up the maximum balance of the normal fee. * The upfront fee is only paid once. Happy 13th Birthday
He has been everything I have ever wanted in a dog. He has been my partner, my pal, my companion, and like a child, a major part of my life. A little independent with a great attitude, he has been extremely pleasant to live with, a joy to be around. As he turns 13, the age related problem of rising with difficulty has arrived. He sees, catches treats, hears, barks for my attention, and has a sparkle in his eyes. He seems happy. He knows he needs to be here to oversee his family and to keep things running smoothly. After I helped him up this morning, he went out, albeit slowly, and fetched his beloved newspaper that lay in the driveway. Nitro has a passion for bringing things to us and has fetched the paper since he was 8 weeks old. Retrieving is his number one talent, followed closely by scent work This birthday is a bonus! Thank you for 13 wonderful and memorable years, Ch. Swiss Star's Nitro Whatagas UD,TDX, DD, U-CDX, HCT, TDI, CGC. Yes, Nitro, I am remembering that I am 13 years older too! Love beyond words, April
Re: keeping cool
If your pup does not seem to 'get' the idea of a cool bed, sometimes a thin cotton sheet will help with a more familiar texture. Don't make a big deal out of it, maybe toss some treats on there. Re: Puppy Weight Gain Question
- Original Message - From: eve berman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Anyone have any thoughts or specific concerns we should be looking for? We don't need a giant behemoth of a Berner but do not want to starve our little guy or miss some condition that could otherwise be identified and corrected. They all grow in their own groove. I would not worry at all. They seem to go out and then up and out and then up. Mic grew like a house on fire until 8 months and crashed to a halt. He weighs at 4 yrs old about 10 lbs more than he did at 8 months; he always outweighed our Pyr, Lliira, by 10-15 pounds each equivalent month in their ages. They are now less than 6 lbs apart as adults. Nessie the Newfie was about 10 lbs heavier than Mic at each equivalent month until 8 months when he stopped and she kept going; now at 3 she outweighs him by 50 lbs! Mic is smaller than both his mother and father in weight. (105 and 120). Lliira is almost her dad's size and quite a bit bigger than mom. Nessie is just about exactly mom's weight and 30 lbs smaller than dad (as well she should be!). Eileen Morgan The Mare's Nest http://www.enter.net/~edlehman --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
