reason for not sharing info
I am curious if there are reasons that a breeder would not give an owner of their dog information regarding owners of littermates. Is this a privacy issue? Is there any other reason why I should or shouldn't let one owner contact another? Just curious Susan Ablon Gweebarra BMD Balch Springs, Tx http://www.pageweb.com/gwebara
Berner Days
If you are within reasonable driving distance of Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia, Care A Lot Pet Supply Warehouse (some of you are familiar with their mail order services) has a retail outlet right on the border of Norfolk/Virginia Beach. Each weekend day, a different breed is featured. August 3, 2003 is Bernese Mountain Dog Day. Show up with your Bener and get 5% off your entire purchase. I was wondering if anyone wanted to get together at a specific time and show Care A Lot what a "bunch of Berners" looks like. Maybe afterwards, if anyone is interested, we could have a little Berner picnic at a nearby park. Please reply to me if you are interested and I'll keep you posted on the developments. I have no affiliation with Care A Lot other than I love the place, they have the cheapest prices in town on all things pet (dog, cat, reptile) and have a large, pet-friendly warehouse where leashed pets are welcome, all the time. They have a website, www.carealotpets.com, if you are interested in pre-shopping... It would be really great to meet some of you since I'm new to Berners but have already decided I definitely need another one!!! PetSmart...puppy classes
What's the story on these. One of my puppy people wants to take classes here. My first reaction is UGH. What do you all think? Does anyone know their training methods? Are they positive or negative trainers? Does it vary by area or is it consistant? I am located in CT. Thanks. Briana Bunsen Berners
Fw: asking for your help to save my bernese puppy
This is a heartbreaking email that I received last night, the sad reality is that this is what is happening to our breed. The number of Berner puppies in pet shops, x-bred and unregistered litters advertised in the papers is now common when only a few years ago it was unheard of, I fear what the future holds for our breed. Goat in the House!
Phew Gone ever so hot and humid again!! Got woken up around 5.30am with torrential rain, dogs barking, cats everywhere a leaping and goats kicking up a terrible fuss! Hah! Was so hot last night had not put the goats in the shed, left one tethered near the kitchen door and the other loose on the bank behind the house, all doors and windows wide open! Well, when the heavens opened goat on the loose came in the house, they hate getting wet! So picture us all at this Ungodly hour of the morning with Abbi in the kitchen and sister Elli still outside going berserk! Honest the cats and dogs did not know what to do apart from jump on me and wake me up! Hastily pulled on me wellies, chased Abbi out, and went to let Elli off her tether and both goats fled to their shed! Closed down some doors and windows and got all the cats and dogs inside again! Thankfully, there was no-one around with a camera!! Don't ask what I was wearing apart from the wellies!!! Then was a lot cooler! When the downpour stopped, me and the Dogs went for wonderful walk up in the woods and the cats and ponies came too! (Sunny is doing really well! Walking off-leash now and back to normal!) This evening is getting hot and humid again, suspect more torrential rain tonight!! Only put the goats out on the yard today, now in their shed again, enough excitement for one day! >From my last post -- I want to clarify that the puppy is indeed symptomatic -- not asymptomatic. In other words, the puppy already has symptoms of her INHERITED elbow dysplasia. Mary-Ann Bowman Utah
Elbows and caution
I just spoke with an acquaintance about her puppy. She purchased the puppy as a show/breeding prospect. At nine months old, this puppy is symptomatic with elbow dysplasia and will be spayed. The person's hopes and dreams about a show dog that she could one day breed just went up in smoke -- she cannot even show the puppy because her gait is affected by the bad elbows. Bad things happen even with the very best of intentions. Breeding is always something of a gamble, and we never know what cards we will be dealt. But isn't it important to stack the deck in our favor in the ways that we can, and in the favor of those who have so much pinned on that small, sweet puppy? This dysplasic and asymptomatic puppy is at least the third generation of failed elbows on the maternal side. She is from a breeder who has more than once stated in a public forum that dysplasia is not necessarily genetic. Well, does three generations of failed elbows tell you anything?! Even the most careful and ethical breeders will produce problems but let's review the definition of insanity -- doing the same thing and expecting different results. Continuing to breed dysplasic dogs is wrong -- plain and simple. It is not fair to anyone. I once again urge puppy buyers -- check those clearances!!! Do not accept those lame excuses -- "jumped off a grooming table" or "jumped off the deck" or whatever other baloney we are fed to excuse elbow dysplasia. There is indeed plain bad luck, which can happen to even the most careful breeder or buyer. But is it bad luck when you are breeding dysplasic bitches over and over -- for generations??? No -- that is not bad luck at all but I will leave it to you to label that kind of behavior. Mary-Ann Bowman Utah

Beware, another virus around!
Do not fret, All well here!!! My AVG picked this one up OK, well, I am scanning all attachments now before I open even though this is taking up a lot of time! Came in as from support @ microsoft.nb (Hackles rose, not microsoft.com?) Header: Your Subscription, mail addressed to me personally. Body: Attached details of your recent subscription Attachment: YourDetails.zip Hmmm! Well, I had recently re-registered with Microsoft, but didn't like it, somehow! Scanned attachment and contained new version of W32/[EMAIL PROTECTED] Instant delete! Just checked and this has just been upgraded to medium risk priority within the last few hours! Be very careful out there, they are getting very clever! And do an update on your antivirus program now, the new DAT files only just went up on McAfee All Love, Jean, Sunny, Sim, Barney and the Longlease Gang http://bernese.biz
Re: First Draft Test by Swissy Club in the Northwest
Indeed congratulations to Ruth and Cindy! And do tell us about the herding. I don't think I've ever heard of herding trials in Maryland. I know that Daisy (my Berner) herds instinctively. When Buddy decides to pretend he doesn't understand the Come command, I send out Daisy and she herds him right to me. Anyone in Maryland know if we have herding? Or some sort of test to see if your dog herds? Maria Crifasi Home of Daisy and Buddy Catoctin Mountains, Maryland

Good so far: canine cooling beds
I have a canine cooler water bed and two Berner boys, one 20 months old, 95 lbs, and the other 4 months old and 45 lbs. I bought the Canine Cooler on ebay after seeing a post about it on the Berner L last year. I think it's supposed to be about 112 F here today and my dogs will be on that bed a lot of the day! They tend to scratch at it and circle before laying down and we have not had a leak yet. Jennifer Mesa, AZ - Original Message - From: "S. Walquist and J. Vermont Berner events.....
Hi Barbara! I saw your post on the Berner-L concerning Berner events in Vermont.there is not much here in the way of Berner specific events (if any at all!!-which I'd like to help change someday!!!) but the Champlain Valley Kennel club is having a show at the Champlain Valley expo grounds on July 12. That's in Essex Jct., outside Burlington (on your way home I think!) and there are 9 Berners entered in Berner classes. I am due to have a baby sometime that week, so I will not be able to go:(. I just aquired my first of manyI hope!!!Berners, a female from the Barking Bunch in NL, and I adore her to pieces. I am so looking forward to meeting other Berners and thier people soon! My husband and I did make it to the regional specialty in Mass. last month, and absolutely loved seeing the 95+ Berners there!!! Hope you have a great vacation here.sorry for replying personally but I still have not figured out how to get my post on the L. Would love to meet you if you'll be in the area! Internet Bernese Mountain Dog Consortium's PandaSite
Well, after almost seven years online, the Internet Bernese Mountain Dog Consortium's PandaSite finally has its own domain space. It was starting to become a question of what would come first -- getting the domain space, winning the lottery, or Panda earning his CD. [Panda earned the first leg of his CD in his first try(!) and just missed the second leg.] So I'm proud to announce, on behalf of Panda and everyone who has helped build the Internet Bernese Mountain Dog Consortium's PandaSite over the years, the new location. It is now http://BerneseBreeders.org/ Please update your bookmarks (and site links!) Thanks! Adam Conn Panda, Pockets, and Bison Plymouth, MN __ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! First Draft Test by Swissy Club in the Northwest
Ruth Neilsen and Cindy Switzler are probably too humble to brag, so I will brag for them. On Friday the 27th. the Northwest Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club held its first draft test. There were two Gt. Swiss, one Rottie and four Bernese entered. Very proud to see how Ruth and Cindy and their dogs worked. There were three Bernese that passed. Ruth with Max (who is nine years old) earned their Open Draft and Cindy with Windee and Katee earned their Open Draft as well. It was extremely hot and on the one mile freight haul it must have been very taxing on them. These were the only passes as well. Today the same Club is holding a AHBA Herding Test and I see Ruth has Winter entered. Look forward to hearing how they do It was so nice to see so many Gt. Swiss and Bernese and two mini Swissies ( Entlebuchers) all in one place. There is talk of trying to form a Swiss Dog Group so we can get together and have a lot of fun. Thank you Ruth and Cindy for making us proud to have our beautiful, wonderful, clever Bernese, and showing how well they can work. Coral.
Re: Bungie Cord Leads
Hi Christy, I have two of them gathering dust in the garage. I did not buy them as training tools. They just looked really comfortable w/ handles and all. The dogs did pull on them and I felt that a good ol' fashioned leash would work much better. Because of the give in the bungee material the dogs really didn't feel it as much when they walk to the end of the leash and tended to keep on going. Susan Kowitz, Mercedes, and Bentley Sequim, WA
RE: Puppies in NJ pet stores
There is also a puppy for sale in Marlboro, NJ at the Pet Paradise, just absolutely horrifying that there are such unresponsible breeders out there. This one was "allegedly" bred out in Kansas. -Original Message- From: Teri [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 27, 2003 5:01 PM To: Bernese Mountain Dog Mailing List Subject: Puppies in NJ pet stores Just FYI, this past week, 2 pet stores in Central NJ have Berner puppies for sale $1500. - the pet store at the Phillipsburg mall had a sign up - not to purchase puppies from puppy miller. It said that all of their puppies are from local breeders and they do not support puppy mills. Can't imagine any breeder selling their dogs through a pet shop. It's so sad that now our berners in the the pet store cages. Teri
