dog with a mission
Once again I am looking for some advice with regards to Tatty who has just discovered her prey drive big time. Yesterday a mouse - no problems with that one though she seems to think she is a cat playing with it and making it squeak! Today it was a bird. which died in her mouth. Now we are happy to have her hunt mice, and would like to know is it possible to train her to know which things she can hunt and which she can't? Also showing my ignorance here is it safe for her to eat the things she catches (we did not let her either time)? There are a lot of birds nesting on the farm in the bushes and we don't want her to go after them particularly not before they are old enough to fly away. There are plenty of kites around so they are used to being prey but Tatty is a new predator! any advice gladly taken, can't see how she has the energy in this heatwave Emma and Tatty in France (40°) --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I would suggest NOT to allow her to eat her catch as wild things carry parasites, both internal and external, that I would rather not have my dog get. As for training her that some wild things are OK (mice YES, birds NO) and others are not, that is asking a lot of discernment in a dog in the heat of the chase. I would think it best to either train not to go after things at all, or just let her hunt at will. Our rescued Aussie was also heartworm positive (among 800 other health issues) when rescued at 10 1/2, with a life expectancy of probably six months to two years (emphasis on the six months). She was put on Inteceptor since collie breeds tend to have a bad reaction to Heartgard. She, of course, heard that and threw up everytime she was given Inteceptor. Put on the Heartgard tablets, she never threw up (and loved the cheese it was wrapped in). Last week, we received the news she had beaten the heartworm. She'll be 13 next month, and enjoyed watching Group Judging and Best In Show at the Duluth Kennel Clob this weekend while her Berner brothers snoozed at the hotel. And she's been invited to the ASCA National Specialty Parade of Rescues in September! And I don't dare mention Bison's shiny new point (nor the one withheld) lest I be subjected to owing a lavish bestowal. From: Susan [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:Re: Heartguard and Benadryl I have used Heartguard for years on both a Berner and a non-Berner because heartworm is a real threat where I live. I had a Newfie mix, same size as a Berner, who had heartworm when I rescued him. The treatment was very hard on him and me, as well. My opinion is that a reaction from the Heartguard could not be as awful as the heartworm treatment. I have had no adverse reaction in either dog from the Heartguard. __ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! That's an accomplishment worth congratulations!! I heartily second Mary-Ann's point that there is nothing like the relationship you build with a Berner by giving them jobs. The training you and your Berner do together builds an understanding that is almost beyond description. From the second VCD2 to the newest, Job Well Done. Dunbar (VCD2, UD, DD, JHD, CGC) is rejoicing from the Rainbow Bridge and cheering all you working dogs. Marjie

Oh, and in case you were wondering..all donations to the Name the Costco Berner Contest will go towards Berner-Garde. The Berner-Garde Foundation was established to collect, maintain and disseminate information about genetic diseases observed in the Bernese Mountain Dog. It is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, not-for-profit corporation and donations made to The Berner-Garde Foundation are tax deductible. The mission of The Berner-Garde Foundation is to ensure that all Bernese Mountain Dogs have a long and healthy lifespan of twelve to fourteen years! To accomplish this goal, the incidence of several serious hereditary diseases must be decreased and, over time, eliminated. It is the hope of all who know and love a Berner that the work of The Berner-Garde Foundation will lead not only to an understanding of genetic diseases in an individual dog, but also in the Bernese Mountain Dog breed as a whole. The history of the BMDCA and Berner-Garde is a lengthy one. There has always been a close working relationship between the two groups. A new effort is underway to develop a DNA Bank for the storage of Berner DNA, along with a tissue repository for the breed. Several other breeds already have a DNA bank. Berner-Garde and the BMDCA already have something like this with the Tumor bank. But think of it - the tumor bank only has abnormal tissue, where a DNA bank would also be able to house DNA samples from all Berners, healthy as well as ones with any diseases. It would include pedigree and medical history information, too, thus making it much more valuable to researchers. Genetic research could proceed more quickly without the need to wait several years for sufficient samples and would support research into genetic diseases affecting the breed, both now and in the future. This effort is a joint developmental effort between BG and the BMDCA. There are still many details to be worked out, and many issues to resolve. And when it is finally implemented, there will be costs for storage and processing. With the DNA Repository in the works and the other Berner-Garde projects, we need to raise funds to support these efforts to extend the lives of our Berners. I'd like to make this fundraiser one of our largest ones ever. Rememberit's for the LOVE of a BERNER!!! Now, you might aks, how can I see all of these wonderful items? It's easy. Go to the web site that Karen Pickel made for our fundraiser and you'll see the 97 items and the specific instructions for sending in your entries for the Name the Costco Berner Contest.
