Re: Dogs call names

2003-02-16 Thread BLKCAT123
What a fun subject Pat.

Before Snowden arrived home I was searching for names on a baby name website that
gave you the meanings origins of the names. I already had his registered name
picked out Skylands Storm Front, since he was born on the night that I went to a
Billy Joel concert in Philadelphia, Storm Front was the album for the concert tour.

Snowden: from the snowy hillorman from the snow capped mountain. Came from the
babyname website.
I thought what a great name for a mountain dog.

So the Snowy goes w/the storm front too!
Since that's what we are having here in the Northeast as this BIG storm is finally
here in PA. Looks like we are going to get 1-2 FEET of snow until it's all done
Monday night...anyway.
Sometimes people say He doesn't looked snowed-in Ha, Ha.
He has lots of nicknames: Snowy, Snowman, Snowdrift, Snowhead, Snowfluff...they go
on.

Misha was one of the BARC rescues from the 2nd auction that came from Russia.
So I wanted a russian sounding name I remembered the mascot from the 1980 winter
olympic games that were in Russia. Misha was a really cute fuzzy bear that was the
mascot that's the name that came to my mind when I saw the little bundle of berner
fuzz. Her name that I gave her for the AKC ILP # is Misha BARC's Alot. She can be
quite vocal I wanted to have the BARC name in there also.

Looking forward to reading about the other pups names on the berner-L

2003-01-21 Thread blkcat123
We have a doggie bakery here in town, Bone Appetit!
They make a few different flavored doggie bone shaped cakes, garlic chicken, peanut
butter carob, banana something...
Anyway the kids usually get a cake from there every year. They write the doggies name
age on if you want there is a candle. It is topped off with this big dog cookie
bone that the writing goes on. It is just too cute. I have photos of them w/their
cakes.

I know he does do mail order for the cakes.

SUPER EASY DOG COOKIES

2003-01-18 Thread blkcat123
SUPER EASY COOKIES

3 cups oats
½ cup vegetable oil
1 cup flour (any kind will do)
1 cup broth or tomato juice
Garlic powder or garlic granules at least one tablespoon.

Mix all of the ingredients into a large bowl.
Spray pan with Pam. Spread mixture into pan evenly out to all of the edges. Bake at
350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Score with knife or pizza cutter into blocks. Bake
30 minutes more. Break up cookies into squares. If they are still soft bake for 15
more minutes. If not soft, leave them in the oven, while it cools down, preferably
overnight for the biscuits to dry a bit more.

My guys really love these treats. They can't get enough are so easy to make.

Dog Treat: Pumpkin-Patch Biscuits

HI Michaela, Harvey Rups list.

Thank you for posting your treat recipe.

I have many to share with the group so as I get them into the computer I will post
them.

My dogs really liked this treat.
The only problem is they stay very moist I just had them on the counter in a ziplock
bag they became moldy after a week. So next time I'm going to store them in the
fridge the rest in the freezer take them out as needed.

Enjoy,

PUMPKIN-PATCH BISCUITS

1½ CUPS WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR
1 TBSP. BROWN SUGAR
½ TSP. GROUND CINNAMON
½ TSP GROUND NUTMEG (OPTIONAL)
4 TBSPS BUTTER FLAVORED CRISCO
½ CUP CANNED PUMPKIN
1 WHOLE EGG
½ CUP BUTTERMILK

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Combine flour, sugar, cinnamon and
Nutmeg and cut in shortening. Beat
egg with buttermilk and pumpkin and
combine with flour, mixing well. Stir
until soft dough forms. Drop by table-
spoons onto ungreased cookie sheet
and bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Cool
thoroughly before serving.

Enjoy in moderation, as eating too
much of anything could upset your
stomach. Limit yourself to no more
than two at a time. “BONE” appetite!

You can substitute other flours such as
rice, rye, oatmeal, potato, etc… if your
dog has allergies to white wheat flours.

Best if stored in refrigerator or freeze and
take out as you need them.

When making treats for my allergic Snowden we substitute the wheat, white corn
flours w/rice or rye flours he seems to be fine.

I do have a bunch of recipes that my mom, Snowy's treat chef :0), has that she makes
for him all of the time. If there is interest I could post them to the list.

When baking make sure you roll out the dough at a consistent thickness (1/8 to 1/4).
You can also leave the treats on the cookie sheet in the oven with it turned OFF
door open so they harden up a bit more, usually overnight.

Have fun baking for your pups,

chasing tails

2002-12-06 Thread blkcat123
Hi there,
How many of your berners out there chase their tails?
Misha is crazy about hers. She chases it round round. Then when she finally gets
hold of it in her mouth she just spins across the yard, living room where ever she is.
It is just too funny.
When she finally stops she looks so dazed confused, then she starts all over again
usually in the opposite direction, maybe she is unwinding herself then.
She has done this one time that I must have watched her for 10-15 mintues. She's just
a girl having fun.

I wish I could catch it on film.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner these cooking tips might come
 in handy

The proper way to cook with dog hair--by Mary E. Wooley

Do you remember the last time you had company for dinner and how
embarrassed you were when you dug up several dog hairs from your best
gourmet effort? That is because there is a right way and a wrong way to
 cook with dog hair.

First, we must remember each dish calls for a different variety. If you
are unfortunate enough to own only one variety, I'm sure you can come up
with a friend who will be willing to exchange the proper variety of hair
with you. Or one could send off an order for a rare variety as they are
 light and easy to mail.

There are many dishes that are basic to most menus these can always be
spiced up with the Buff variety. These are especially useful when baking
biscuits, pastries and yellow cakes. The Black and Tan hairs go well
with fall dishes, Thanksgiving turkey, mince, or pumpkin pies or even
yams. Black of course is for your roasts, steaks, ribs and hearty dishes
including stews which carry blacks well.

Naturally, Chocolate will go well with most desserts, unless it is a
very light Jell-O type dessert. then go back to the Silver Buff. If you
are especially interested in foreign foods most varieties can be used in
Mexican Japanese and Chinese cooking. In fact, any nationality food will
accept most dog hairs without hurting the food.

A good rule of thumb to remember which dog hairs go with which dish is--
use them as you would a good wine-- white wine and light hair with the
delicate dishes. Dark wine and dark hair with the more robust, heartier
 dishes.

Use your dog hair in Good Health!

(Comment overheard at a dog show. one sure way to tell a real dog
person, if we find a human hair in our food, we immediately say oh
yuck, I can't eat that it has hair in it! If its a dog hair we just
flick it out and go right on eating. Think about it )
