Gt. Swiss and herding instinct.
I was so impressed with the following message about some Gt. Swiss that live near Toronto, Ontario, thought you might like to hear about it. The owners also breed Norwegian fjord horses as well as Amstaffs "I can honestly say that I have had experience with these dogs moving horses. Both of my dogs have the most amazing natural droving abilities & both have very different techniques. My bitch is a calm drover, she swings back & forth behind the animals (up to 6 horses at a time when we are leading them to & from fields) & keeps them moving forward in a tight group. She acts like a 25+ ft extension of my arm, I signal to her & she'll move out or in depending on where the horses we are trying to catch or move are. My male, on the other hand will work much the same way, but if a horse falls out of the group (his circle), he will bark. He works very close to their hocks (too close to get kicked), with the occasional woof to keep them moving forward. Once the horse gets his point, he continues driving them silently. I was truly amazed at how they took to this on their own. My male had his first experience working on his own with horses at 8 months old. My two fillies got loose & I took him alone to see how he'd deal with them (every other time he was working with my older bitch). When I pointed out the two loose youngsters, he ran to them, they went back to the horse yard & stopped. He stopped quietly beside them. I led one of them & he worked the other filly (she's totally untrained) in beside the one I was leading. He barked at her hocks until she was right beside the one I was leading. He then quietly drove them (close at their hocks) until they were right up against the gate & they both walked back in calmly. It was remarkable. What I find interesting is how the horses respect these dogs. They stay calm & calm down when the dog dictates it. I've never seen such a confident natural drover. This is the added bonus of this breed when you live on a farm!" Coral. .

Counted Cross Stitch
I did not have any luck with counted cross stitch patterns for an alphorn. Am now on the search for small Bernese counted cross stitch patterns, about 29 x 27. I do have the one of the Bernese puppy with his paw over a stocking. Am doing mini stockings for our booster in October so would like to use a few different patterns, if possible. Please email me privately. Thank you. Coral.
Happy Story
Will enclose a lovely message about the ten year old Appenzeller. It is nice that the Bernese and Entlebucher people are so helpful. "Hello Everyone, I wanted to update you all on Zola, the 10 year old Appenzeller in Gainesville. Thanks to the quick responses and networking from all of you, it looks like this boy is going to have a wonderful home. A retired veterinarian in TN saw Lisa Allen's post to the Appenzeller list and immediately became very interested in the dog. She and her partner have a 4 month old Appenzeller mix, a 14 month old Carolina dog and they just lost their old Newf/Ridgeback. From my communications with her, I know that they would provide a wonderful and loving home for this poor dog so sadly abandoned by his owner. She is making arrangements to go down to Gainesville to meet Zola and take home. I cannot thank all of you enough for your help in this sad situation. I have been involved in several Appenzeller rescue situations over the years and your people have been of great help in each and every one. I'll follow up and let you all know how Zola is doing once he gets to his new home. Thank" Makes a nice start to the day to get this kind of message. Coral.
Appenzeller Rescue.
That message was kindly forwarded to me yesterday. I in turn forwarded it to my contact with the Appies. Hope this story has a happy ending. If I hear anything further will let you know. Coral.
Alphorn
Does anyone happen to have, or know where I could purchase, a counted cross stitch pattern of an alphorn? Can contact me privately and I thank you in advance. Coral.
First Draft Test by Swissy Club in the Northwest
Ruth Neilsen and Cindy Switzler are probably too humble to brag, so I will brag for them. On Friday the 27th. the Northwest Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club held its first draft test. There were two Gt. Swiss, one Rottie and four Bernese entered. Very proud to see how Ruth and Cindy and their dogs worked. There were three Bernese that passed. Ruth with Max (who is nine years old) earned their Open Draft and Cindy with Windee and Katee earned their Open Draft as well. It was extremely hot and on the one mile freight haul it must have been very taxing on them. These were the only passes as well. Today the same Club is holding a AHBA Herding Test and I see Ruth has Winter entered. Look forward to hearing how they do It was so nice to see so many Gt. Swiss and Bernese and two mini Swissies ( Entlebuchers) all in one place. There is talk of trying to form a Swiss Dog Group so we can get together and have a lot of fun. Thank you Ruth and Cindy for making us proud to have our beautiful, wonderful, clever Bernese, and showing how well they can work. Coral.
Swiss Dogs
This is probably not on topic, but, last week Bobbie Hefner gave a person my name as a person to talk to about a Swissy puppy. I have lost Bobby's email address or I would have thanked her.. I had two lengthy telephone conversations with the novice person, first dog, etc. etc. Hopefully, I have put this person onto the right track and he now has his wonderful new puppy, Cruiser (wonderful name for a Swissy). What makes it really nice, after a lot of digging, found out that "Cruiser" is a fifth generation from our wonderful Swissy, Liesel. Gee it feels good to be able to help someone, at least I sincerely hope I did. He told me that he probably would not have got the puppy without all the advice I gave him. (sure hope he thinks so in a few months down the road). Coral.
Odd Request
My friend in England would like to get a collar for her lovely big Berner boy that looks like jewels around it. Does anyone have any ideas. You can contact me privately if you like. Thank you. Coral.
Limping Appy
I forwarded the message about the Appenzeller that was limping to a breeder of these dogs for a long time. This is her reply. "Coral, I haven't heard of anything like this occasional lameness. I would suggest taking him to another vet. It could be a nerve problem, maybe in the spine. Sorry that I cannot offer a better answer."
Swissy Puppy
I have passed the message on regarding a Swiss puppy to some folks in the :"Swissy World". Your friends have made a good choice. We are so pleased up here in the North West. We opened up our draft test in April to include Miscellaneous Breeds (per the CKC) and we have a Swissy entered. I know he is practising very very hard and the Seattle folks have been very kind helping them to do the Canadian rules. The Swissy folks are having their own draft test in Washington in June so we are looking forward to seeing it. Coral.
Copper Cookie Cutters and Oz. Cha.
I am desperately trying to locate Bernese cookie cutters to make dog biscuits for the dogs at our draft test in April. Would be better than doing Easter bunny ones. Anyone have any leads. Would appreciate it please. You can email me privately My cousin in Oz sent me a picture on the cover of Qld. Dog World.this month. It is Bernese Australian Ch. Zeigen Impashioned Prince. If anyone wants a look at him just email me privately please. Coral.
Susan Berlin.
