RE: Dog cars- need help
I have to say my favorite dog hauling vehicle is the Lexus RX300 (and i'm on my second one -- the first one was totalled in a massive 5-car interstate accident which I walked away from without a scratch or even a bruise). This midsize SUV gets 19+ mpg (even in the city traffic) and 22 on the highway, the back seats fold completely flat allowing tons of level room for dog crates, dogs without crates, and it's relatively low to the ground (more like a van) allowing for easier access by the dogs. I can also throw my mountain bike in the back and it fits fine -- I have hauled 8 X11 foot rugs, furniture, and more stuff than you can imagine would fit from the looks of this vehicle on the outside... The Lexus dealership always gives me a free loaner (always another RX300) and they wash & vacuum my car whenever I come in for service -- I've never had to do anything other than routine maintenance -- oil changes, services and replace tires and brake pads -- this car is totally trouble free -- and with almost 80,000 miles. Roadside assistance is free and wonderful if you ever need it (like for a flat tire) The air conditioner works great (and I'm in Memphis where it will be 110 heat index today!) -- there's a back seat A/C vent to keep the canines comfy..., the stereo system is superb and the seats are so comfortable. It's more like a nice comfy car with the advantages of an SUV. It also has a quick engine that will really accelerate when you need the power. Lexus has just changed the RX for this year -- it's a little wider w/ a little more space inside the cargo area and it looks awesome. They are very reasonably priced..compared to a lot of choices out there... especially when you consider the fact that you never have to spend anything other than on routine maintenance. (Even the tires aren't expensive) I could go on and on, but visit their site and see for yourself -- better yet, go drive one!! I will always have one of these! http://www.lexus.com/models/rx/index.html Happy motoring -- and I'm so glad you're OK after the wreck, Andrea!! The back windows go down - one of only two on the market that do. The Honda MPV's do also, but it is a smaller minivan and doesn't come in an AWD version. The Sienna's rear seat also folds into the floor - really handy when you are on the road and either need the seats or the space, and you don't have a handy spot to store. My current dogmobile is a 96 Caravan - so I know that the folding option, as odd as it may sound at first, will come in really handy. We have a loaded one on order - leather seats (easier to clean), and AWD. For some reason, here in NH, the AWD version is harder to find. Also, it is lower to the ground than an SUV - something we wanted to consider for the dogs. At 40K, it isn't cheap, but our plan is to use it until we run it into the ground, and it will last the life of our dogs. Good luck! I am waiting for a good excuse to get rid of my VW Passat wagon to get a bigger dog vehicle. My VW has been great but I want something a bit roomier for the dogs. I do worry about them in the car not crated. In the past I was never interested in mini-vans and one reason was because the passenger windows don't go down. However, I have decided on the new (2004) Toyota Sienna mini-van. The passenger windows do go down, the AC is in the back, AWD is available. It is wider than most vans so could fit 2 crates side by side and still have the back seat or fold down the back seat to put another crate in. It also has good ratings (as most Toyotas do). FW: Sporting Dog Seminars
FYI -- Just contributing to the Cabela's email campaign... will be interesting to see what kind of response i get... Jennifer -Original Message- From: Jennifer Burgess [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, July 10, 2003 2:49 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Sporting Dog Seminars Dear Cabela's Executive Management: I'm writing to express my concern and disappointment in Cabela's for your irresponsible decision to allow breeders to make puppies available for sale at your recent Sporting Dog Seminars. I have been a Cabela's customer for many years and I am also the responsible and proud owner of both a sporting dog, a 5 year old Labrador Retriever, and a 1 year old Bernese Mountain Dog. Both of these dogs were purchased through reputable breeders (far outside my area) after considerable research and review by me. Please note: I also had to be "screened" by these breeders to make sure I could provide an appropriate and responsible home and environment for these dogs. I'm not sure I can ever bring myself to patronize Cabela's again if you are going to condone impulse puppy buying and allow irresponsible breeders access to your facilities to "peddle their puppies." This type of activity could potentially have disastrous long-term results. Responsible breeders (those with the future and the best interests of the breed in mind) are always willing to discuss the breed, pros and cons, responsibilities of ownership, etc., in an appropriate forum or one-on-one with potential dog owners. With proper research and follow through by both the potential puppy buyer and the breeder (the screening and qualifying should go both ways!) hopefully breeding problems and unhappy owners -- and ultimately abandoned or abused dogs -- can all be avoided. But never should there be an open "marketplace" allowing disreputable breeders to take advantage of impulse buyers who are not qualified. No reponsible breeder would participate in this type of activity and no truly responsible trainer would condone it either. Anyone involved in this has to be a puppy mill or a backyard breeder interested strictly in money and not the long-term viability of the breed. I read this statement on your web site: "Cabela's is committed to providing quality products, value, service, and guaranteed customer satisfaction to outdoorsmen and women throughout the world. With over 40 years of service to our customers, our goals remain the same: a good deal, a fair shake, and better service with quality products at competitive prices. That's what Cabela's is about - today, yesterday, and for the future." I implore you to take your own words to heart and be responsible about the future of these wonderful sporting dogs... let's work together to make sure they get "a good deal, a fair shake" and that we have in mind their best interests for "today, yesterday, and for the future." Please support responsible breeding and dog ownership and through your words and your deeds -- please, no more breeder displays and puppy sales -- help us fight the battle against irresponsible breeding and sales practices. I will reconsider my decision to boycott Cabela's products once I'm sure your management understands the magnitude of this problem and does something about it! Thank you for your prompt attention. I look forward to your response and hope I don't get the same form letter I've gotten copied on by countless other responsible dog owners like me who are asking you to reconsider your position on this subject. RE: (OT) Re: scrapple
all this talk about Scrapple makes me think some folks may be interested to know that there was actually a very cute independent film called Scrapple (about a pig named Scrapple & some ski bums in Colorado) that has received some nice reviews. My good pal Geoff Hanson and his brother Chris Hanson wrote, produced and directed the film (they have done some award-winning documentaries including a couple featuring the band, Widespread Panic). Scrapple the film has a great soundtrack and it's available on DVD... if you love fun films with great characters, this one is for you... takes place in the 70s -- so for those of us who remember that era -- some fun flashbacks... it has a great story line about the pig, and some really fun characters... RE: Dogs call names
We have an unusual story behind selecting Rex's (9 months old today) name. My teenage daughter & I knew we were getting a wonderful pup from Sheila Dolan in Alabama, and we had about 10 names (that was the narrowed-down list!) that we agreed on but were having a hard time making a final decision. To narrow the list and make things more fair, we wrote all the names on little slips of paper, tossed them up in the air and let Mabel, our 4 year old beautiful Black Lab, pick her new little brother's name. She selected Rex, digging the slip of paper out of the pile & dutifully retrieving it to me. Rex it was. But even better, we found out later from Sheila that her father's name is Rex! So Mabel definitely made the right decision for all concerned! the list continues to grow --- but so far, Rex (8 months) has eaten 9 pairs of Victoria's Secret panties, 2 silk flower arrangements, 2 pairs of panty hose, a Birkenstock, a glove, a packet of hot chocolate mix, a bar of soap, a DVD case from Blockbuster (that was fun to explain), and my personal favorite, my daughter's 22-page Honors U.S. History Term paper... luckily it had already been graded -- she got an A. RE: Tennessee Police
I heard on the news last night that this is the THIRD incident recently in which this particular officer has shot a dog... a little suspicious to me. Clearly he has some issues with dogs. Such a shame. And Mary is right -- there is a different attitude here in the South.. which is a shame! Makes me embarrassed to say I live in Tennessee, sometimes. I go everywhere with my dogs in the back of the SUV, and now this video has made me wary. Maybe this tragic event will cause police depts to look into some kind of awareness training and develop some policies or standardized responses (like the canine version of the Miranda rights -- or something) that will cause officers to pause and think before shooting. If this guy had any knowledge of dogs at all, he would have known that the tail wagging was a sign of non-aggression. Looks like just shooting them is first in his mind. If I were an attorney I would take this case on with a vengeance. I am not going to either defend or accuse the officer, but let me just say, things are different here in the south. Many, many of our more rural counties have no "animal control" agency - their animal control is limited to calling the sheriff out when there is an animal problem, like an unwanted stray in the yard, and the "normal" response to such a complaint is for the sheriff to shoot the offending animal. If it turns out that the animal was someone's pet, oh, well... My point is, law enforcement officers here in the south have probably all been involved in this type of thing, so this particular officer may have not even given it a second thought. Is it right? No. Is it progressive? No. But given the mind-set here, I can certainly see how easily it could have happened. Mary and the girls, Laurel and Bailey Fayetteville, GA
RE: Lap Sitting!!
I think the lap-sitting thing is one of the endearing traits of a Berner. The image of a huge fluffy dog curled up (and over) his person, testing the weight of the chair is comical and sweet at the same time -- just why we all love these guys so much. I am actually considering a much larger chair just so the ever-growing Rex (now 7.5 months) can be comfortable while sitting in my lap. We started this when he came home with us from Sheila Dolan's farm in Ala. (in fact, he sat in my daughter's lap the entire 6 hour drive home, paws on each of her shoulders). From that day on, our laps are fair ground for him. What amazes me is that he is so graceful and gentle despite his size as he's climbing up, as if he knows to be careful and take it slow and easy while "settling in." Right now I have to push the ottoman up against the chair just to accommodate both of us. By this time next year, things will be out of hand, so I'm just going to get a really spacious chair. My couch is suede, so we try to spend our snuggle time in the chair instead! Jennifer (Rex and Mabel -- the black Lab who prefers to lay on my feet!) We have a Berner & a black Lab in a house with an off-white kitchen floor and cream-colored Berber carpet (and hardwood). I have a Rainbow Vacuum which is absolutely the best. It's a canister style but filters the dirt, dust, mold spores and hair through a water reservoir with an antibacterial solution added. Does wonders with the dog hair and really cleans the dust, dander & germs out of the air. It's really powerful but so easy to maneuver. (Comes with tons of tools, powered carpet attachment, hardwood & tile attachment, small brush, edge tool, upholstery & small power head for the stairs) When you finish vacuuming the house smells wonderful. It's a big investment, but for someone with allergies and lots of dog hair, it's well worth it. Our allergy problems have diminished significantly since I got this vacuum cleaner in Feb of '99.
