For anyone that is interested in reading more about the study done at
Perdue, here is a link: http://www.vet.purdue.edu/epi/bloat.htm. In
particular, there is the sumary of findings on the 3/1/2000 update page
(http://www.vet.purdue.edu/epi/update2.htm), where it is stated that raising
the bowl increases the risk of bloat by 110%.

Re: Cute Valentine Berners (CDN)

I saw them too. Picked up the last 3 they had at the Zeller's closest to me
(anyone living in the Ottawa, Canada area, forget the Zellers at Hazeldean
Mall - they're sold out :) ) Pretty cheap too. $10 (US$6) for the little
one, and $15 (US$10) for the bigger one.

Try and pick out the real berner!

I saw some cute stuffed Valentine's Day berners at Zellers today.

There are two sizes - one is a pup, about a foot tall (very very cute) and
the other one about a foot and a half tall (also cute), both sitting up
and
holding a plush red velour heart in their paws.

 Thought I'd pass it on...

Re: Licking and chewing paws

2003-01-11 Thread Mike Alexander
Can anyone help with the following? My 13 month old Berner Boy licks and
gently chews on his front paws. The skin between the toes appears red
and
sore. I tried putting a bit of Vaseline in there to no avail. Is there
anyting topical anyone suggest to stop this?

Could be an allergy. My older non-berner, Bart, is allergic to ragweed, and
the symptoms sound the same. He will lick his paws until they are raw if I
let him (I don't). Bart's allergies are seasonal (late summer to late fall).
I have pretty good success by giving him fatty acid supplements starting in
June, and antihistamine when the allergy effects begin to show (talk to your
vet about appropriate doses). During really bad years, he goes onto Vanectyl
P tablets, but this is best avoided if possible, since it contains a steroid
and is not good for the liver. It also increases his drinking and urination.

Re: Car sick Cooper

2003-01-04 Thread Mike Alexander
Is this motion sickness or car sickness something they will outgrow or am
I
going to have to have a Berner confined to the house?

My non-berner boy (read: mutt), Bart, hated the car. He used to be so
nervous about the car, that he would fight me to get him in it, and once he
was in, he would throw up within the first block or two.

To get him more accepting of the car, I started taking him on short trips,
to places I knew he liked to go. After a while (several months), he got to
understand that the car took him to good places, and he relaxed about going.
Today, he is 6 yrs old, and he still only tolerates the car, but that is all
I ask. He doesn't have to love it, as long as he gets in, and holds his
lunch.

On the positive side, since he doesn't love the car like most dogs do, I
don't have to deal with the disappointment of telling him he's not coming
when he hears my car keys, and he doesn't bounce around in the car like a
lot of dogs do. In fact, once he is in the car, he lies down, and hardly
moves until we get to where we are going.

I am looking for better durability and something easy to clean. Is
leather the way to go?

Hi Ruth! Sounds like Timber is living the pampered life. Sophie has recently
discovered that she can get on the couch as well (Sophie is Timber's sister
and litter mate).

My older dog, Bart, is not a Berner, but he is about the same size, and
sheds just as much. When I went looking for a new couch for my TV room a few
years ago, I mentioned to the sales people in every store that I had a large
dog that would be on it, and every one of them said the same thing -
leather. After 4 1/2 years of Bart climbing on that couch regularly, it has
held up great. Barely a mark on it anywhere.

Also, the leather is much much easier to keep free of shedding hairs. Just a
quick wipe with a cloth is all it takes.

Two years ago, I replaced the cloth furniture in my living room. With my
experience with the couch in the TV room, there was no question I was going
to be buying leather again.

  They ALL loved
chocolate. They ALL lived normal, healthy lives.

I'm glad that you have never had any problems, but my way of thinking is
that, if they don't need it, and if there is any question whatsoever about
it's affects, why give it to them? There are lots of safe treats that my
dogs love, so there is no need to take a chance giving them chocolate.

Besides, if I did want to give my dogs chocolate, then I would have to start
keeping it in the house, and I would probably eat most of it myself, and I
REALLY don't need it! ;-)

Unexpected jealousy

2002-11-24 Thread Mike Alexander
I've got a problem I wasn't expecting. I have a wonderful 12 week old berner
girl named Sophie, and a 6 yr old non-berner male named Bart. When I brought
the puppy home, I was a little worried about Bart being jealous about having
to share my attention with a pup. In fact, quite the opposite is happening.
Bart is very good and accepting of the puppy, and I think he is happy to
have another dog in the house. Sophie is also very happy, and gets along
great with Bart, but when I pay attention to Bart, Sophie will stand and
bark at us, trying to get the attention. She is the one showing signs of
being jealous.

So far, all I have done is ignored Sophie while she is barking, and
continued giving my attention to Bart. Once the barking stops, then I start
giving her some attention, while still paying attention to Bart. Is there
anything else I should be doing? I'd like to curb this before it turns into
a big issue when she gets older.

Thanks,
...Mike

Hey, that's Sophie's brother! I posted about bringing Sophie home on
Thursday night (although I didn't have a name decided then). I saw Timber a
few times at Rose's while I was there to see my pup. He is a really sweet
dog, and I am glad to hear that he made his way to Alaska alright.
