2017-09-18 Thread Ray Molenkamp
Allright! Good to know it was given some thought, that being said, I still had
to talk some users into finding  the .zip  distribution. Clicking
'MacOS/linux/other' apparently

isn't *that* intuitive. Also my 32 bit Ubuntu just got served a 64 bit build,
so I still feel some

tweaking can be done here.

2017-09-18 Thread Julian Eisel
Just a quick update on Ray's concerns (we already discussed them in IRC):

Term 'portable' was replaced by '.zip'.
Re hiding of other platforms, the platform is automatically detected.
So if you're running 32bit Linux, the big download button should
download Blender for 32bit Linux.
I'd say there was definitely some thought on how end users actually use it! ;)

Why is the .zip file advertised as 'portable' on the download page ?
We write to the users profile folder for settings and any 3rd party
add-ons that get installed by the user. Which is exactly what portable
applications are not supposed to do [1]

'standalone' instead of portable will probably be better.

Also it being hidden behind the 'macOS, GNU/Linux, and other platforms'
drop down is making the 32 bit builds (and zip versions) harder to find
for end users (people on irc were already complaining about not being
able to find things).

The website looks great, but can we give some thought on how end users
will actually use the website?

Re: [Bf-committers] Blender 2.79 Release Candidate 2 AHOY

2017-09-12 Thread Gustavo Niemeyer
Hello all,

Congratulations on the great release!

I'm one of the developers responsible for snapd at Canonical (
https://snapcraft.io), and would just like to let you know that on Ubuntu
or other Linux distributions that accept classic snaps, installing 2.79 may
now be done with:

sudo snap install --classic blender

This works on any of the latest Ubuntu releases, and the installed binaries
are the exact ones made available in the downloads page (IOW, it was not
rebuilt as typical for deb packages).

The 2.80 release is also available via the --channel=edge command line
flag.

As a regular Blender user, I'm a fan of your work. Thanks, and keep it up!

Hi,

We are ready for the 2.79 final release!

Information for platform maintainers:

- Build from the blender-2.79-release branch,
SHA 5bd8ac9abfa2fa5db8ddfef393fc2c4dc82ba22d
- Addons revision: f1c6cfa21594e7c8b7a43cd1e0653d8a812929c6

2017-08-18 Thread Sergey Sharybin
Hi,

All the builds are available now at
http://download.blender.org/release/Blender2.79/

Now we need to wait for mirrors to pick up the new builds, and then web
team would need to update the download page.
