[Ontbirds] Lake Boshkung (Haliburton) Merganser "Mega-brood" Repeats Again This Year

2017-07-03 Thread Steve Kinsley via ONTBIRDS

Not at all a rarity, but for birders who might be around Lake Boshkung in Haliburton County, be on the look-out for a repeat performance of a Common Merganser "mega-brood" around the lake. Seen this morning on Beech River at its mouth into Lake Boshkung, the single female adult had 23 fledglings in tow. Last year the numbers steadily climbed to well over 30, so it looks like another repeat performance this year!
Lake Boshkung runs north of Highway 118 to the west of Highway 35, and the Beech River area is about half way north on the lake's east side (2-3 km north of 118). I believe there is a public boat launch of sorts near where Highway 118 crosses a narrows between Boshkung on the north and Little Boshkung on the south. Some great birding around this lake where Robert Bateman grew up cottaging and continues to sometimes visit his brother in the old family cottage. Happy birding!

[Ontbirds] More GTA ravens, Pair in northern Scarborough, Reesor and Steele's.

2017-07-03 Thread Barry Kent MacKay via ONTBIRDS

I first heard, then saw a pair of Northern Ravens while walking east from
Reesor Road, south of Steele's Avenue, northern end of Scarborough. There
are lots of powerlines in that area but it is the first you encounter going
south from Steele's, and has two openings that you can enter and walk
eastward.just a few meters apart. I suspect one of those big hydro towers
has a bulky nest on it but I didn't see it. Grackles were mobbing one of
the pair.

[Ontbirds] Dickcissels in Milton

2017-07-03 Thread Gavin Edmondstone via ONTBIRDS
At 3:30 this afternoon I saw two singing male Dickcissels near the Velodrome in
Milton. From Regional Road 25 go west on Louis St. Laurent Avenue until it ends
at a right turn on Pan Am Blvd. The birds are in a weedy field on the west side
near the corner.

Sadly the Dickcissels did not come close enough for good photos in the time I
had.

Thanks for the heads up. The pair were very showy this morning--no problem
in finding. Looks like they will be around for a while.

5 young not very big.

Erin is on hwy 124 between Guelph and Orangeville.

I was surprised they weren't mute swans.

[Ontbirds] Frigatebird update, Sturgeon Creek, Leamington

2017-07-03 Thread sales--- via ONTBIRDS
The Frigatebird was observed from Sturgeon Creek last night (Sunday July 2) at
8:50 pm drifting north
along the waterfront toward the town of Leamington, as per Brian Morin. She did
not return to her roost
site of the past 3 nights on Sturgeon Creek. Observers have been looking since
6:00 am this morning
Monday, July 3, from the Pelee Wings and the Robson Road locations but have not
re-found her. If I hear
of any sightings I'll post here today.
