[Ontbirds] White Eyed Vireo (Continues in Ottawa)
The White-eyed Vireo found by Roberta Kay on 30 Oct, and enjoyed by many observers on a daily basis since then, continues today in Ottawa. The bird was seen this morning actively foraging in its favoured area a few metres north of the parking area where the trail forks west and (north)easterly. Folks looking for the bird should note that it continues to loosely associate with a flock of up to five chickadees. Carefully check the area near the small creek immediately north of the trail intersection; the area north of where the trail turns easterly; and the small meadow with the single apple tree north of the trail intersection. Patience may be required: the bird will show well for a few moments then become difficult to find for extended periods. Directions: Follow OTTAWA REGIONAL ROAD 174 (THE QUEENSWAY) in Ottawa’s east end to CHAMPLAIN STREET opposite Place d’Orleans. Follow CHAMPLAIN STREET northerly for approximately one kilometre to the dead end with parking for FRANCOIS DUPONT PARK. The trail intersection and general area favoured by the bird are just few steps north of the dead end. [Ontbirds] American Avocet (ALFRED, Eastern Ontario)
The American Avocet at the Alfred Lagoons -- first reported late yesterday on e-Bird by Daniel Lafortune -- continued as of late this morning. I was able observe the bird from the observation tower as it actively foraged in both cells of the lagoon and occasionally at close range. The bird briefly relocated to the marshy area just south of the entrance to the lagoon but returned about ten minutes later. The Alfred Lagoons are located on 2 kilometres south of Alfred, Ontario. Directions: Follow COUNTY ROAD 17 to the EAST side of ALFRED. At the intersection with COUNTY ROAD 15/PEAT MOSS ROAD, head south for 2 kilometers on PEAT MOSS ROAD. Welcoming signage, the lagoons and an observation tower are readily found on the east side of the road. [Ontbirds] Barnacle Goose Yes (Sunday morning 25 Mar 18)
The Barnacle Goose showed well this morning for five observers until approximately 0840 when it departed the lagoon behind the Trisan Centre and headed northerly with a small flock of CANG. As I had to return to Ottawa, I did not attempt to relocate: hopefully it is still faithful to its established habit of visiting nearby fields and then returning to the lagoon. Directions for Trisan Centre as previously posted: from the intersection of Highways 27 and 9 in Schomberg, head south on Highway 27 to Dillane Dr, then follow Dillane Drive easterly to access the Trisan Centre parking lot. [Ontbirds] Chuck Will's Widow continues in Prince Edward County
In addition to five Whipporwills in the area, the Chuck Will's Widow was calling well last night (Saturday 21 June) between 2200-2230. Bird was vocalising from the previously reported location: the north side of Hill Top Road about 600m east of the intersection of Hill Top Road and Brewer's Road, south of Milford in Prince Edward County. Visitors should be mindful that foilage is heavy along this narrow seasonal road and there is some local traffic even at 2200.
