[Ontbirds] Whitby Mountain Bluebird
I phoned the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority this afternoon and spoke with one of their wildlife specialists about the Mountain Bluebird. They were appreciative that I called and told me that they were aware of the bird's presence and are happy that people are coming to see and enjoy it. With that said, they emphasized that people are to stay on the trails, the land is owned by them and they can charge people with trespassing if they are not on the designated trails. They will be monitoring Lynde Shores this weekend. Also be very careful about parking, there is actually no designated parking on that road except for the two locations near the trails. Have a great time, hope everyone sees the bird and respects it and the conservation area. [Ontbirds] Purple gallinule - 1030am
Currently being seen. Directions as per Jeremy’s original post - > Location: John R Park Homestead cbe found by searching Google Maps, and is on County Rd 50 between Kingsville and Harrow in Essex County. If you park in the gravel parking lot up against a flower garden, walk to County Rd 50 and turn right. There is a bridge over the road, and the bird is less than 100m south of Rd50 (toward the lake). Viewing is difficult and will require patience. The bird was resting for a while out of sight, then came back into view and foraged before flying across the creek, where it was still viewable but tricky. Hopefully that makes enough sense! The approximate GPS coordinate of the bird is (41.9966, -82.8485), which is in the middle of a small marsh. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Yellow crowned night heron - Ajax
A Yellow crowned night heron was photographed last Saturday at Duffins Creek, Ajax and posted on Facebook. The bird was re-found yesterday but not confirmed until today. I just saw the bird briefly hunkered down with some other Herons. It flushed a short distance to a tree. To see the bird a scope may be necessary. Take the Westney exit of the 401 and head south. Turn right on Lake Driveway and follow road around. There are 3 spots you may be able to look for bird. The first is across from 176 Lake Driveway - there’s a spot to see into the creek. The second spot is further down the road turn right into Rotary Park and park at boat launch and look north. The other potential spot is from the bridge crossing the creek at south end of Rotary Park. Good luck! [Ontbirds] Mountain Bluebird continues
The Mountain Bluebird was still present this afternoon at 3pm -- it varies between being on Concession eight just east of Sideline 32 and North of 8 on Sideline 30. It was also seen in a small puddle in the field on the north west side of 8 and 30. A note about the location -- the whole area where the bird is is actually part of the Rouge National Park and is regularly patrolled by Park Staff. We met one of the wardens this afternoon -- they are very excited to have the bird in the park and asked us to share that they will be monitoring as people visit to make sure that no one is trespassing in the fields and also to ensure that the bird isn't disturbed while it is feeding, they want to make sure people aren't chasing the bird to get closer to it and interrupt its ability to feed. There is an offence individuals' could be charged with for interfering with wildlife under federal park regulations. That said, they are thrilled to have people come see the bird. You may run into them while you are there. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
