I think your description is accurate, and while it may intuitively sound
problematic, it turns out it does not actually cause any issues.

Even in a scenario where one entity is consistently creating all the
spacechain blocks, they can only do so as long as they consistently leave 0
profit on the table for others. This is actually perfectly acceptable,
because that means this entity is not censoring anyone. As soon as they try
to abuse their position with censorship, it's trivial for anyone to step in
and outbid them.

How trivial, you may wonder? Well, there is very little difference between
being a spacechain miner and a spacechain user. Both are expected to run
full nodes, the only difference is that the miner has some BTC available
and is willing to use it to "mine" the block reward in the spacechain. This
means that the barrier for users to act as miners is low to the point where
it may happen altruistically, and, interestingly, it also doubles as an
appealing way for users to purchase spacecoins in a decentralized fashion.

Btw, I personally prefer not to call a "BMM chain" a sidechain, because in
my eyes it's not a sidechain if the chain has its own altcoin. The
spacechain design (which avoids the use of an altcoin) comes closer to
being a sidechain in that regard, but even there the use of the term
"sidechain" is debatable.

What bothers me about BMM is the B.

Mainchain miners assume that sidechain functionaries check the sidechain rules.
Their rule is that if the sidechain functionary is willing to pay an amount, 
then obviously the sidechain functionary must benefit by at *least* that amount 
(if not, the sidechain functionary is losing funds over time and will go out of 
business at some point).
Thus the BMM is an economic incentive for sidechain functionaries to be honest, 
because dishonesty means that sidechain nodes will reject their blocks and they 
will have earned nothing in the sidechain that is of equal or greater value 
than what they spend on the mainchain.

But the BMM on mainchain is done by bidding.
Suppose a sidechain functionary creates a block where it gets S fees, and it 
pays (times any exchange rates that arise due to differing security profiles of 
mainchain vs sidechain) M in fess to mainchain miners to get its commitment on 
the mainchain.
Then any other competing sidechain functionary can create the same block except 
the S fees go to itself, and paying M+1 in fees to mainchain miners to get 
*that* commitment mainchain.
This triggers a bidding war.
Logically, further sidechain functionaries will now bid M+2 etc. until M=S 
(times exchange rates) and the highest bidder earns nothing.

That means that sidechain functionaries will not earn anything once there are 
at least 2 functionaries, because if there are two sidechain functionaries then 
they will start the above bidding war and all earnings go to mainchain miners, 
who are not actually validating anything in the sidechain.
So they are doing all this work of validating the sidechain blocks, but gain 
nothing thereby, and are thus not much better than fullnodes.

Even if you argue that the sidechain functionaries might gain economic benefit

It's not necessary for everyone to burn individually. My preferred design
is to only let BMM block creators burn BTC, then others will have to buy
spacecoins from them. This limits the potential burn outputs to one per
block (likely much less, because BTC will logically only get burned when
spacecoin demand increases). It's also possible to create more spacechains
inside the initial spacechain, at no additional storage cost to Bitcoin.

Businesses storing data on-chain is undesirable but sadly unavoidable.
Therefore one might as well *facilitate* data storage beyond just OP_RETURN
by offering a more efficient way to store data on-chain, while still being
almost as expensive in use per byte of payload (i.e., data) compared to
using OP_RETURN.

Storing data using OP_RETURN is still inefficient per byte of payload so a
more efficient dedicated data storing facility might be created that stores
more payload data per on-chain byte. Such a facility should be (marginally)
cheaper to use per payload byte compared to using a hack such as OP_RETURN.
This would encourage the use of this facility in favor of OP_RETURN or
other hacks, while at the same time dramatically reducing the footprint of
storing data on-chain.

This has already been discussed and proposed in various papers and 
articles, typically to replace SHA-256d with something else. It 
basically works, but there's a some tiny issues:


1) Who goes first?

If you first calculate the expensive PoW and then do a cheap SHA-256d 
around it, anyone can malleate it by changing the outer PoW.


If you first calculate the cheap SHA-256d and then do an expensive PoW 
around it, it would work, but then you would have to retool the P2P 
protocol.


2) What's the incentive for miners?

In a "normal" soft-fork, miners have the incentive to upgrade because 
their blocks will be orphaned if they don't, and even the old clients 
won't accept them.


Here, miners will be able to produce an alternate chain that will appear 
valid to old clients, and that the new miners won't be able to orphan 
(since their hash power is much weaker).

aggregation services that already exist, but I had some different ideas
that integrate into some other services. Also thanks for sending the link
to the single use seal asset transfer. I will take a look at that.

But timestamping is useless for most things people want to do, as it can't
commit to a unique history. It merely proves something existed in the past. For
uniqueness, you need something like:

Anyway, at current fees being what they are there's no compelling reason to try
to prevent people from embedding data in the Bitcoin block chain with consensus
changes. Economics is preventing that just fine.

The same technique can be used on P2PKH as well --- the "pubkey hash" need not 
be a hash of a public key, it can be a 20-byte commitment, or even an ASCII 
message like "ZmnSCPxj is the best" (20 characters, I counted).
There is nothing that *can* check if the hash of a public key is indeed the 
hash of a public key unless you actually reveal the public key.

If you need a 32-byte commitment, a P2WSH would work --- again the "script 
hash" need not be a hash of a script, it can be any 32-byte commitment.

In all these cases you have to waste 547 satoshi, but that tends to be small 
compared to tx fees currently.

myself and others. Allowing one hash per block allows for what I call
"fee-bidding Blind Merged-Mining" (BMM), which as far as I know was first

If only one hash is allowed per block, then those who wish to utilize the
hash will have to out-bid each other ("fee-bidding"). This hash can then be
used to create another chain ("merged-mining"), while the Bitcoin miners do

fee-bidding variants that function e.g. by burning or locking up bitcoins
in order to create consensus.

As it turns out, fee-bidding BMM can be achieved using only a covenant

Thanks for the feedback. Will update the 40 bytes to 80 bytes (40 bytes was
the previous value, but it has since been updated to 80 so that's correct).
Regarding the L2 proposal. I think the BIPs I am working on will address
your questions and I'm hoping to have two more out early next week so
please stay tuned. I'm open to merging those BIPs into this BIP or
vice-versa, but for the sake of making things more readable I broke them
down into several BIPs for the time being.

Doing so would confiscate coins, and also it is impossible to remove
legacy multisignatures in general without gutting almost all of Script.

I guess you are right that it doesn't technically require a hard fork, but
I see this proposal as more likely being merged with other hard fork or
soft fork features. It depends on which upgrades are happening at the time.
If there's a specific soft fork being proposed to merge this proposal with,
I can update it.

This will be discussed further in a future BIP, but the basic idea is that
each miner can run an additional piece of software that builds the tree
structure. It's much like submitting a transaction to the network today, if
one of the miners does not accept it, another likely will.

Good point, there are other ways to do proof of burn.

You don't seem to provide any data as part of your rationale, so I'll
provide some context. As it stands, the chain size sits around 386 GB, with
OP_RETURN data accounting for 2.5 GB of that.

I'm also concerned about the coordination required to get into The One
OP_RETURN Per Block, as this certainly requires some measure of
centralization of that Merkle Tree construction.

Some of those OP_RETURN outputs have non-zero value. As such, those outputs
are provably unspendable, and they are essentially paying the rest of the
coin holders via supply deflation.

Finally, Bitcoin nodes may safely discard OP_RETURN outputs at any time,
since they are unspendable. Thus, nodes can clear a few GB of disk space
whenever they need it, but that data is less than 1% of the total chain
size at the time of writing.

Firstly, a minor point is that your proposal is a soft-fork, not a
hard-fork.

But more importantly, adding limitations on OP_RETURN transactions is not
helpful.  Users who want to embed arbitrary data in their transactions can
always do so by encoding their data inside the values of legacy
multi-signature scriptpubkeys (pubkeys can be generated without knowing the
private key in order to encode non-key related data).  Not only can users
do this, users have done this in the past.  However, this behaviour is
problematic because such multi-signature "data" scriptpubkeys are
indistinguishable from "real" multisignature scriptpubkeys, and thus must
be kept in the UTXO set.  This differs from outputs using OP_RETURN which
are provably unspendable, and therefore can be safely omitted from the UTXO
set.

Thus, given that it is otherwise impossible to stop people from putting
arbitrary data values into their transactions, then we rather encourage
people who are going to encode their arbitrary data in transaction to use
the OP_RETURN outputs in order to avoid UTXO bloat.

Also, as it stands, fees already nudge various participants to consolidate
their data in the way that you suggest they do.
