Re: [Blackbelly] lamb disappeared

2012-02-02 Thread Cecil R Bearden
I have lost a lamb in a larger pasture, and it weighed about 7 lbs. I
finally concluded it was to hawks. I have good anecdotal evidence that
a hawk can pick up a 15lb poodle.

Hi Jerry,
Here in California I've lost bigger ABB lambs to coyotes and eagles. Ususally
with the coyotes I can find some tracks, but the eagles just snatch them up
(yes I've seen it). The coyotes are more prevalent though and they just grab
them and run.

A 2 day old ABB lamb, one of a twin pair, has disappeared. There is no sign of
intruders, no hair, no bones, no evidence.

We do have coyotes, hawks, owls, and buzzards here, but no panthers and no
eagles nearby, This lamb was in a small flock in a 2 acre paddock completely
enclosed with a good 4 foot hog wire fence. Our guard dog was with the main
flock in another pasture. I'm guessing the lamb weighed about 3 lbs, could be
a little less; it was the smaller of the twins.

Have any of you had that experience? Do you know what manner of critter can
either totally consume such a lamb or remove it out of the paddock without a
trace?

Thanks for your help,

Any chance that your lamb crawled through the fence and the LGD ate him?
Also, I think that Eagles only weigh about 10#. Surprised me as they look
bigger due to their large wing span, but they are opportunistic and usually eat
carrion. But a 3# lamb would probably be doable. Just a few thoughts.

[Blackbelly] transport trips are forming now!

2012-02-02 Thread Ron Keener

hello everyone!

I am accepting reservations now for FEB-MAR-APR transport trips. I have
a few reservations (going coast to coast) but I don't have enough
reservations to make the trips feasible. Your need for transport could
be the deciding factor in allowing me to be on the road again. Gasoline
prices continue to rise so transport fees are going to be going up also.
I do not expect a worldwide recession to happen again to save us on
gasoline prices.

Using the Bruton luxury limo trailer allows me to make trips with
smaller loads while still paying my expenses. Speaking of expenses I
have decided to retire two of my tow vehicles (short van and van/RV with
a total of 1 million miles between them), to rebuild the long van, and
to build a new heavy duty tow vehicle based upon an extra heavy duty
'people mover' mini-bus. I have to build the tow vehicles that I need
because no one builds a vehicle that is appropriate for the unique
application that I have. This is lots of expense for me! Just more proof
that I plan on being around for a while.

For long range planning I will be transporting a load of T4 genetics
boer goats to Pennsylvania for the True Colors production sale Memorial
Day weekend. The consignors for this sale will have some of the very
best colored boer genetics there for auction. Google 'True Colors Boer
Sale' for information. My plan is to deliver the Texas consignees to the
sale location, wait for the sale to complete, and then begin a coast to
coast transport trip including sale animals (and other animals - my
'normal' loading) from the central Pennsylvania location. This is an
opportunity for colored boer breeders to pick up new genetics with
transportation guaranteed and for other breeders to move animals
westbound. I may have limited space so help me by planning ahead!

Go to www.jackmauldin.com/Articles/our%20article%20010.htm to see a
recent endorsement of my transport services. Thanks Jack!

also:

several people who have bought from me have used Ron Keener and have had
good luck. Thanks to Jon in TN jongiezentan...@yahoo.com

We have used Ron Keener and were very pleased. The trailer was clean,
the doe was fed and watered and not stressed when she arrived.
