Comment (by bdubbs):

 I've been using xsane for quite a while, but not frequently. For my
 modest needs it still works fine. We need to see what the overhead is for
 simple scan and what its features are like.

 It seems that Upstream has stopped working on XSane, per Debian.

 {{{

 your work.
 }}}

 The XSane domain is now unavailable as well. It's been moved to GitLab as
 of this year, but no development in 6 years.

 [https://gitlab.com/sane-project/frontend/xsane]

 I think we should replace this with GNOME's Simple Scan. It'll have to be
 upgraded at new minor versions (next is 3.34 in September) like any GNOME
 program, but it should be cleaner and work better with what we have.

 The problem with removing gtkmm2 is the need for gnome-docking-library to
 be added. I haven't really looked into that yet, finally settling down to
 take care of tickets and other work.

 This mitigates the recent DOS from certificate-flooding the keyservers,
 CVE-2019-13050

 See e.g. [https://access.redhat.com/articles/4264021]

 From that article, mitigations as per upstream:

 As per upstream: High-risk users should stop using the key server network
 immediately.

 Open ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf in a text editor. Ensure there is no line starting
 with key server. If there is, remove it.
 Open ~/.gnupg/dirmngr.conf in a text editor. Add the line keyserver
 hkps://keys.openpgp.org to the end of it.

  - - -
 I'm unclear if we ought to be modifying our install (do we need to run
 dirmngr as a daemon?) or our instructions for configuring it - I don't
 have any ~/.gnupg/dirmngr.conf

 Noteworthy changes in version 2.2.17

   * gpg: Ignore all key-signatures received from keyservers. This
 change is required to mitigate a DoS due to keys flooded with
 faked key-signatures. The old behaviour can be achieved by adding
   keyserver-options no-self-sigs-only,no-import-clean
 to your gpg.conf.  [#4607]

   * gpg: If an imported keyblocks is too large to be stored in the
 keybox (pubring.kbx) do not error out but fallback to an import
 using the options "self-sigs-only,import-clean".  [#4591]

   * gpg: New command --locate-external-key which can be used to
 refresh keys from the Web Key Directory or via other methods
 configured with --auto-key-locate.

   * gpg: New import option "self-sigs-only".

   * gpg: In --auto-key-retrieve prefer WKD over keyservers. [#4595]

   * dirmngr: Support the "openpgpkey" subdomain feature from
 draft-koch-openpgp-webkey-service-07. [#4590].

   * dirmngr: Add an exception for the "openpgpkey" subdomain to the
 CSRF protection.  [#4603]

   * dirmngr: Fix endless loop due to http errors 503 and 504. [#4600]

   * dirmngr: Fix TLS bug during redirection of HKP requests. [#4566]

   * gpgconf: Fix a race condition when killing components. [#4577]

 Even that shouldn't be necessary, just drop the consolkit part of the
 note. That said, I'm thinking members of the disk, wheel, and adm groups
 should be able to run the application, and this would be a great
 authorization example for the book (though I'm sure there are other places
 where this is true as well):

 {{{

 if (action.id == "org.gnome.pkexec.gparted" &&
 subject.isInGroup("adm")) {
 return polkit.Result.YES;
 }
 });

 /* Allow users in disk group to run GParted without authentication */
 polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
 if (action.id == "org.gnome.pkexec.gparted" &&
 subject.isInGroup("disk")) {
 return polkit.Result.YES;
 }
 });

 /* Allow users in wheel group to run GParted without authentication */
 polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
 if (action.id == "org.gnome.pkexec.gparted" &&
 subject.isInGroup("wheel")) {
 return polkit.Result.YES;
 }
 });
 EOF
 chmod 644 /usr/share/polkit-1/rules.d/org.gnome.gparted.rules
 }}}

 Note that the above has not yet been tested, but should work barring any
 syntax errors.

Comment (by bdubbs):

 GParted 1.0.0   (2019-05-29)

 Release Notes

   This release of GParted includes a significant undertaking to
   migrate the code base from gtkmm2 to gtkmm3 (our GTK3 port). Thanks
   go to Luca Bacci and Mike Fleetwood for making this happen.

   With this major change we bump up the major version number. This
   1.0.0 release is not meant to indicate that GParted is more stable
   or less stable than before. Instead it means that GParted now
   requires gtkmm3 instead of gtkmm2. Note that several other
   dependencies have changed as well.

   As with our other releases, this one also includes several
   enhancements, bug fixes and language translation updates.

 ### Key changes include:

   * Port to Gtkmm 3
   * Port to GNOME 3 yelp-tools documentation infrastructure
   * Enable online resizing of extended partitions
   * Add F2FS support for read disk usage, grow, and check
   * Fix slow refreshing of NTFS file systems

 Bug Fixes
   * Port to Gtkmm 3 (#7, !9)
   * Increase minimums to libparted 2.2 and glibmm 2.32 (!22)
   * Enable online resizing of extended partitions (!23)
   * Port to GNOME 3 yelp-tools documentation infrastructure (!24)
   * Remove support for btrfs-progs < 3.12 (!26)
   * Set title of Resize/Move dialog for an extended partition (#44, !28)
   * Add F2FS support for read disk usage, grow, and check (!29)
   * Replace String::ucompose() with Glibmm equivalent (#46, !31)

#12244: python3-3.7.4
-+---
 Reporter:  bdubbs   |   Owner:  bdubbs
 Type:  enhancement  |  Status:  assigned
 Priority:  normal   |   Milestone:  9.0
Component:  BOOK | Version:  SVN
 Severity:  normal   |  Resolution:
 Keywords:   |
-+---

Comment (by bdubbs):

 What's New in Python 3.7.4 final?

 *Release date: 2019-07-08*

 Core and Builtins
 - bpo-37500: Due to unintended side effects, revert the change introduced
 by
   :issue:`1875` in 3.7.4rc1 to check for syntax errors in dead conditional
   code blocks.

 Documentation
 - bpo-37149: Replace the dead link to the Tkinter 8.5 reference by John
   Shipman, New Mexico Tech, with a link to the archive.org copy.

 What's New in Python 3.7.4 release candidate 2?

 Security
 - bpo-37463: ssl.match_hostname() no longer accepts IPv4 addresses with
   additional text after the address and only quad-dotted notation without
   trailing whitespaces. Some inet_aton() implementations ignore whitespace
   and all data after whitespace, e.g. '127.0.0.1 whatever'.

 Core and Builtins
 - bpo-24214: Improved support of the surrogatepass error handler in the
   UTF-8 and UTF-16 incremental decoders.

 Library
 - bpo-37440: http.client now enables TLS 1.3 post-handshake authentication
   for default context or if a cert_file is passed to HTTPSConnection.

 - bpo-37437: Update vendorized expat version to 2.2.7.

 - bpo-37428: SSLContext.post_handshake_auth = True no longer sets
   SSL_VERIFY_POST_HANDSHAKE verify flag for client connections. Although
 the
   option is documented as ignored for clients, OpenSSL implicitly enables
   cert chain validation when the flag is set.

 - bpo-32627: Fix compile error when ``_uuid`` headers conflicting
 included.

 Windows
 - bpo-37369: Fixes path for :data:`sys.executable` when running from the
   Microsoft Store.

 - bpo-35360: Update Windows builds to use SQLite 3.28.0.

 macOS
 - bpo-34602: Avoid test suite failures on macOS by no longer calling
   resource.setrlimit to increase the process stack size limit at runtime.
   The runtime change is no longer needed since the interpreter is being
   built with a larger default stack size.

 What's New in Python 3.7.4 release candidate 1?

 Security
 - bpo-35907: CVE-2019-9948: Avoid file reading by disallowing
   ``local-file://`` and ``local_file://`` URL schemes in
   ``URLopener().open()`` and ``URLopener().retrieve()`` of
   :mod:`urllib.request`.

 - bpo-36742: Fixes mishandling of pre-normalization characters in
   urlsplit().

 - bpo-30458: Address CVE-2019-9740 by disallowing URL paths with embedded
   whitespace or control characters through into the underlying http client
   request. Such potentially malicious header injection URLs now cause an
   http.client.InvalidURL exception to be raised.

 - bpo-33529: Prevent fold function used in email header encoding from
   entering infinite loop when there are too many non-ASCII characters in a
   header.

 - bpo-35755: :func:`shutil.which` now uses ``os.confstr("CS_PATH")`` if
   available and if the :envvar:`PATH` environment variable is not set.
   Remove also the current directory from :data:`posixpath.defpath`. On
 Unix,
   :func:`shutil.which` and the :mod:`subprocess` module no longer search
 the
   executable in the current directory if the :envvar:`PATH` environment
   variable is not set.

 Core and Builtins
 - bpo-37269: Fix a bug in the peephole optimizer that was not treating
   correctly constant conditions with binary operators. Patch by Pablo
   Galindo.

 - bpo-37219: Remove errorneous optimization for empty set differences.

 - bpo-26423: Fix possible overflow in ``wrap_lenfunc()`` when
 ``sizeof(long)
   < sizeof(Py_ssize_t)`` (e.g., 64-bit Windows).

 - bpo-36829: :c:func:`PyErr_WriteUnraisable` now displays the exception
 even
   if displaying the traceback failed. Moreover, hold a strong reference to
   :data:`sys.stderr` while using it. Document that an exception must be
 set
   when calling :c:func:`PyErr_WriteUnraisable`.

 - bpo-36907: Fix a crash when calling a C function with a keyword dict
   (``f(**kwargs)``) and changing the dict ``kwargs`` while that function
 is
   running.

 - bpo-36946: Fix possible signed integer overflow when handling slices.

 - bpo-27987: ``PyGC_Head`` structure is aligned to ``long double``.  This
 is
   needed to ensure GC-ed objects are aligned properly. Patch by Inada
   Naoki.

 - bpo-1875: A :exc:`SyntaxError` is now raised if a code blocks that will
 be
   optimized away (e.g. if conditions that are always false) contains
 syntax
   errors. Patch by Pablo Galindo. (Reverted in 3.7.4 final by
   :issue:`37500`.)

 - bpo-28866: Avoid caching attributes of classes which type defines mro()
 to
   avoid a hard cache invalidation problem.

 - bpo-27639: Correct return type for UserList slicing operations. Patch by
   Michael Blahay,

Comment (by bdubbs):

 Notable Changes in NSS 3.45

 *Bug 1540403 - Implement Delegated Credentials (draft-ietf-tls-
 subcerts)
 - This adds a new experimental function: SSL_DelegateCredential
   Note: In 3.45, selfserv does not yet support delegated
 credentials. See Bug 1548360.
 - Note: In 3.45 the SSLChannelInfo is left unmodified, while an
 upcoming change in 3.46 will set SSLChannelInfo.authKeyBits to that of the
 delegated credential for better policy enforcement. See Bug 1563078.
 *Bug 1550579 - Replace ARM32 Curve25519 implementation with one from
 fiat-crypto
 *Bug 1551129 - Support static linking on Windows
 *Bug 1552262 - Expose a function PK11_FindRawCertsWithSubject for
 finding certificates with a given subject on a given slot
 *Bug 1546229 - Add IPSEC IKE support to softoken
 *Bug 1554616 - Add support for the Elbrus lcc compiler (<=1.23)
 *Bug 1543874 - Expose an external clock for SSL
  - This adds new experimental functions: SSL_SetTimeFunc,
 SSL_CreateAntiReplayContext, SSL_SetAntiReplayContext, and
 SSL_ReleaseAntiReplayContext.
  - The experimental function SSL_InitAntiReplay is removed.
 *Bug 1546477 - Various changes in response to the ongoing FIPS review
  - Note: The source package size has increased substantially due to
 the new FIPS test vectors. This will likely prompt follow-on work, but
 please accept our apologies in the meantime.

 Certifiate Authority Changes

 *The following CA certificates were Removed:
  -   Bug 1552374 - CN = Certinomis - Root CA

 And lo, a list of vulnerabilities '''did''' appear.

 [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/advisories/mfsa2019-21/]

 Various CVEs rated as moderate - I think the moderate vulnerabilities
 include the item mentioned above, but there are also high risk and
 critical fixes.

#12242: firefox-68.0

 Reporter:  ken@…|   Owner:  ken@…
 Type:  enhancement  |  Status:  assigned
 Priority:  normal   |   Milestone:  9.0
Component:  BOOK | Version:  SVN
 Severity:  normal   |  Resolution:

Comment (by ken@…):

 From the Release Notes: (comments in parenthesis are min)

 This is also the start of the next Extended Support Release (esr)

 Dark mode in reader view expands so that windows are also dark on the
 controls, sidebars and toolbars.

 Improved extension security and discovery:
 New reporting feature in about:addons allows you to report
 security and performance issues with extensions and themes.
 Redesigned extensions dashboard in about:addons provides easy
 access to information about your extensions, including data and settings
 access required by each extension.
 Find high quality, secure extensions via the Recommended
 Extensions program in about:addons, which now displays user count and
 ratings for each extension. "Recommended” badges for these extensions also
 appear on AMO. More extensions will be added over time.

 Cryptomining and fingerprinting protections are added to strict
 content blocking settings in Privacy & Security preferences.

 WebRender will roll out to Windows 10 users with AMD graphics cards.

 Windows Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) update download
 support, which allows Firefox update downloads to continue when Firefox is
 closed.

 Fixed

 Various security fixes (At the moment, the latest details there are
 for 67.0.4, but that might get updated later)

 Local files can no longer access other files in the same directory.
 (There is a report today at The Register saying a poc worked on 67.0.4,
 and that mozilla responded that a patch would be supplied in a few days.
 This was not initially fixed because it *might* break local html
 documentation.)
