Re: [BlindHandyMan] How to Clean or Replace Your furnace Filter

2006-08-03 Thread David Ferrin
If anybody ever wonders down the isle where the furnace filters are located
especially if they have never gone there before it can be a bit overwhelming to
be sure. There is an extremely extensive selection of shapes sizes and types of
filters to choose from. I get the 90 day variety that are of a hire quality and
it only costs just over $20 per year. Mine takes 2 at a time and they only need
changed every 90 days which lasts through the winter. Right now it is so hot
that it's a bit hard to believe that the thing will need to be started up again
in a few months, we just can't win.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] How to Clean or Replace Your furnace Filter

Hi
Has it been more than a month since you ventured into your furnace's filter
area? Then it's probably time to clean or replace this dust and dirt catcher
to prevent you from sneezing your way into winter mornings. A clean filter
maximizes your furnace's efficiency and longevity-- and minimizes your energy
bills.

Steps:
1.
If the floor or area near the furnace is a dust-bunny breeding area, vacuum or
sweep prior to replacing the filter.

2.
Locate the service panel, usually on the furnace's lower front or side.

3.
Turn off the furnace, then gently pop open or pull down the panel door with
your hands; tools usually aren't needed.

4.
Locate the filter--a framed-mesh rectangular screen inserted either
horizontally or vertically near the intake-outtake blower.

5.
Slide the filter screen out (see A). (Image 1)

6.
Check for brown, dusty buildup on the mesh screen (or a screen you're unable to
see through).

7.
If you have a reusable plastic-frame or metal-frame filter, use a hose to rinse
away the dust particles on the screen in the backyard or driveway (see B).
Let it dry, then return it to the furnace. (Image 2)

8.
If you have a disposable cardboard-frame filter, write down the size, then
throw it away. Buy a new furnace filter of the same size (available at hardware
and home supply stores).

Overall Tips:

If someone in your home has allergies, you may want to consider an allergenic
reduction filter.

To keep the air in your home healthy, replace your furnace filter monthly
during chilly months and at least once a season.

Overall Warnings:

Be sure you turn off the furnace before opening the front panel.

Do not use the furnace until a clean filter is installed.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] generator sizes

2006-08-03 Thread Trouble
That is not the problem. The problem with that is gas is a combustion
engine and diesel is a compression engine.
The gas engine compresses the fuel and then lites it with a spark.
The diesel engine just lites it by compressing the fuel mix until it
explodes, no spark. Even with glow plugs. They are only used to heat
up the air and mix. To make compression easier for the engine.
Now a gas engine may use different fuels that basically work on same
type. They just may have a different way of getting it into the chamber.
A diesel engine can work on just about anything with a oil base.
Sense diesel is only flammable when compressed to vapor. If just a
flame is put to diesel. It has to heat up before it does the burn.

At 01:53 PM 8/2/2006, you wrote:
Interesting. The ones we installed at the university were mostly natural
gas fired. Usually a gasoline engine converted to natural gas. When we got
to the larger capacity generators they were only available with disel power.
I never heard of any engine that could accomidate both disel and gas. Seems
like there is something about the compression ratio necessary for disel that
tends to damage things if there is gas in it.

Well Cy, you won't get much fight out of me on this one. As I indicated,
it's been a long time. One of the frames we used was a Reo. Hope that
gives you an idea. The IH whad been in a fire. I don't know where the
Studebaker came from, but since we had a '52'
Studebaker ton and a half, it had probably been picked up for parts. I
think the frame we used in Voc Ag was a Ford. It worked out really well as
we used the original yard and a half dump body. The dump was activated by
turning a shaft mounted just in front of the body with a crank that had to
be 2 ft. long.

I wonder why we didn't need to get out and exercise so much back then?

Fellas, I am sorry but I disagree with this.
It is the distance from the rear whells of the towing vehicle to the

towing vehicle.
If the trailer has a very long tongue and the towing behicle has a
short distance from the center of the rear wheels to the hitch then the
trailer will do exactly what you have said, it will not follow the
vehicle around corners.

That's the rule of thumb. But obviously if the wheelbase is 8 feet,
and the vehicle overhang is 4 feet, something is going to give, and
I'll bet it is the rule of thumb.

If the distance is twice the trailer will turn on a different radius
then the tow vehicle. This may mean the trailor comes much closer to
the curb then the tow vehicle when rounding a corner. (Sometimes
resulting in real surprises for pedestrians.) (It can sometimes even
provide a shock for the tow vehicle driver as for instance the trailor
jumping the curb after the tow vehicle had rounded the cornor with
little trouble.)It will also be very difficult to back up in confined
spaces as the tow vehicle has to make exaggerated turns to get the pole in
correct position.

Joe

The greater the difference between the rule of thumb and the actual,
the greater the potential for difficulty.

I am curious about this and I know there is about 4 or 5 of them on the
market. I have forced air and central air so I am in need of something
 like
this I believe my thermostat has a 4 wire hookup. I am interested in
 others
that have purchased this or other talking models.

I have had the one from Talking Thermostats.com for nearly a year. We like
it well, it has been telling me that I need to change my filter and have my
furnace serviced for some time now and I haven't got around to figuring out
how to stop that message but that only happens when I ask to hear the
temperature or status.

 1. durability

Appears to be fine, only had it about nine months though.

 2. accurate

Seems to be accurate.

 3. clear voice and hopefully nice on the ears as some are tinny or just
 irritating

The speaker is pretty small so only so good but it is clear.

 4. easy to use

We don't seem to have much trouble using it except that I am pretty stupid
about remembering what buttons do what. With all the different remote
controls and other devices around here I find my aging brain just doesn't
keep all that straight.

 5. functionality and expandable / programmable

There are two sets of programming available, week-day and week-end and
within eack of those there are four programmes so you can turn the
temperature up, down then up and down again in each cycle or the other way
around.

 6 other things I forgot.

The device can be removed from the wall to be programmed from the comfort of
an easy chair.

 Thanks for your input/thoughts.

You are welcome.

I just bought the Calvin talking thermostat, and apart from learning my
 way
through the four daily programs, I find it's excellent value for $149 US
 it
is a full-featured thermostat and has the added advantage of being able to
receive raise or lower temperature commands by voice. It comes with a
 CD
that is full of well constructed audio instructions. I picked it up from
independent living aids and apart from the costs I had to incur getting it

2006-08-03 Thread Phil Parr
Alright, since none of you wimpy bastards would step up to the plate and
take on the coveted job of guest coordinator for the shows we are forced to go
to plan b. Although, before I give up let me point out all the benefits
bestowed upon one by accepting such a challenge.
You would of course be associated with the most listened to blindness
related shows on either radio reading services or the internet. There would be
a special exhibit in the blind handyman hall of fame with your picture and a
description of your life and work both in print and brail. and last but
certainly not least, thru special arrangement you would be aloud to ask Dan
Rossi up to four questions per year. And as if that weren't enough, and it dam
well should be I have a bonus for you. If you can keep a secret I might tell
you Boops real name. O well, I suppose some persons just don't know a good
thing when it comes their way.

Seriously, here is plan b. If you can think or know of some one whom you
think might make a good guest for either show could you pleas apprise us of
that persons contact information. As I said, locating guests for both shows is
an every week thing and, any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. We
know their are thousands yea, hundreds of thousands of blind people who would
make wonderful guests for the shows the question is how do we make contact with
them.
In total their are almost four hundred persons on both lists. Now I know,
some of us are on both so here is the point. If all of you sent us a potential
guest we would have enough for several years. o k, if you are on both lists you
must send two.

Part of this little post has just been in jest but, we really do need all
the help we can get.

   Thanks, Phil Parr.

P S, I apologize for calling you a wimpy bastard.

With a Central air unit. You cool all airiers not just one. I got a
apartment with a window/wall mount in the wall. It cools only half
the apartment. My back bedroom stays warm no matter what I do. Even
using a second fan to push the cool air down the hall doesn't do a
thing. Glad all rooms here have ceiling fans in them. Wish it had Central air.

I think it might depend on how many folks live in your house.
It seems to me that if there are just a couple then it would be more
efficient to only heat or cool the area you are using.
From all I have read the per BTU cost of a window unit is just about the
same as the central units. This being the case, since the window units are
as efficient then you really gain nothing by using the central unit except
the convenience of not having to bother with the units in each area.
As high as energy is getting it might save quite a bit of money not to cool
those areas of your house you are not currently using. AT night just cool
your bedroom and during the day you need not cool the bedroom cause you
ain't supposed to be in bed, you are supposed to be out doing something
meaningful. (LOL)

by just unplugging the machine to clean the filters . However two newer ones
I can still clean the pop out filter but the newer ones are programable so
I do not make any adjustments, especially with the hot weather which has
found its way to the Northeast. I might also say, If I had the money and a
better brain at the time I would have opted for central air which my furnace
is set up for. Now that I said all of that, how many of you are operating
air conditioners which are more than 10
years old. .I'dfinish by asking sighted folks in my house to not to
touch any settings on these older machines as I always know what is set to

and take on the coveted job of guest coordinator for the shows we are forced
to go to plan b. Although, before I give up let me point out all the
benefits bestowed upon one by accepting such a challenge.
You would of course be associated with the most listened to blindness
related shows on either radio reading services or the internet. There would
be a special exhibit in the blind handyman hall of fame with your picture
and a description of your life and work both in print and brail. and last
but certainly not least, thru special arrangement you would be aloud to ask
Dan Rossi up to four questions per year. And as if that weren't enough, and
it dam well should be I have a bonus for you. If you can keep a secret I
might tell you Boops real name. O well, I suppose some persons just don't
know a good thing when it comes their way.

Seriously, here is plan b. If you can think or know of some one whom
you think might make a good guest for either show could you pleas apprise us
of that persons contact information. As I said, locating guests for both
shows is an every week thing and, any help you can give would be greatly
appreciated. We know their are thousands yea, hundreds of thousands of blind
people who would make wonderful guests for the shows the question is how do
we make contact with them.
In total their are almost four hundred persons on both lists. Now I
know, some of us are on both so here is the point. If all of you sent us a
potential guest we would have enough for several years. o k, if you are on
both lists you must send two.

Part of this little post has just been in jest but, we really do need
all the help we can get.

Thanks, Phil Parr.

P S, I apologize for calling you a wimpy bastard.

If you have a ceiling exhaust fan and about 3/4 inch gap at the bottom of
the bathroom, shut the door and turn on the exhaust fan. It will draw the
hot out and draw the cool air through the house. Not as good as a attic fan
but does work.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] drier vents

2006-08-03 Thread NLG
Just coming into this thread. I would be more concerned about moisture using
one of these diverters than anything else. I.E. in the winter, if the dryer is
in the basement and the furnace is also in the basement I would use it, but in
the summer, (like now) I would not use it. I know, I know! it's suppose to
dirrect the exhaust to the outside in summer ? I never saw one that was sealed
enough to get all the moisture outside.

Just my thoughts.

[BlindHandyMan] How to Maintain a Window Air Conditioner

2006-08-03 Thread Boyce, Ray
Hi
When a window air conditioner cools poorly, it doesn't necessarily mean you're
in for an expensive trip to the repair shop. It could be the machine just
needs a good cleaning and some tender care.

Steps:
1.
Remove the front grill. Pry it off with a putty knife if it's held by clips, or
use a screwdriver if it is screwed in place.

2.
Unplug the air conditioner, slide it out of the window cabinet and set it on a
sturdy table. You may need a helper to move the air conditioner if it's heavy.

3.
Locate the mesh filter. It covers the radiator-like fins on the machine's
evaporator coils.

4.
Remove the filter, and wash it and the grill in a mixture of warm, soapy water
and bleach--this will remove any mold. Shake out the excess water and set
the filter and grill in your dish drain to dry.

5.
Vacuum the evaporator coils thoroughly, using a vacuum with brush attachment.
Remove any stubborn dirt with a plastic scrub brush.

6.
Inspect the fins on the coils. If any fins are bent or flattened, buy a fin
comb from an appliance store and run the comb up or down the fins to straighten
them.

7.
Turn the air conditioner around so the back is facing you. You will see a
second set of coils--the machine's condenser coils.

8.
Vacuum these coils thoroughly, using the vacuum and brush attachment. Remove
any stubborn dirt with a plastic scrub brush.

9.
Inspect the fins on the condenser coils, and if any are bent, use the fin comb
to straighten them.

10.
Remove any dirt or lint from inside the unit, using the vacuum and crevice
attachment. Make sure you clean the fan blades, too, using the vacuum and brush
attachment.

11.
Put the air conditioner back into the window cabinet.

12.
Reinstall the filter and front grill, and plug in the machine.

Overall Tips:

Having a hard time vacuuming dust deep inside the coils? Take the air
conditioner outside and use a leaf blower to blow the dust away.

Clean the filter monthly when the air conditioner is running. The machine will
cool better, and you'll cut energy consumption 5 to 15 percent.

Overall Warnings:

Take extra care when working around the fins on the evaporator and condenser
coils. They are extremely delicate and bend easily.

[BlindHandyMan] How to Replace a Blown Fuse

2006-08-03 Thread Boyce, Ray
Hi
The next time someone turns on the hair dryer, microwave and toaster oven all
at once and sends your house's circuits into a tizzy, be prepared. If you
live in an older home with electrical circuits protected by fuses, keep
replacements on hand.

Identify and test a blown fuse

Steps:
1.
Open the door to your service panel and examine it with a flashlight to
identify the blown fuse. Typically lights are on 15-A circuits. Receptacles may
be either 15 A (for 14-gauge wiring) or 20 A (for 12-gauge wiring). A large
fixed appliance, such as an electric range or a water heater, should be on
its own circuit, protected by fuses as specified by the appliance manufacturer
(see the appliance's rating plate for amp requirements). In addition, one
or more main fuses protect service lines coming from your power utility.

2.
For light and receptacle circuits, look for a break or blackened area visible
through the glass of a screw-in plug fuse. If all the fuses look good, identify
the fuse according to the circuit label (map) printed on the door or next to
each fuse.

3.
If the circuits are not mapped, locate the fuse by trial and error: Remove the
fuses one at a time and either insert a new fuse to test the circuit, or
touch the pointed probe of a continuity tester to the fuse's tip and the clip
to its threaded shaft. If the tester does not glow, the fuse is bad.

4.
For fuse blocks, which protect an electric stove and the main circuit, pull
straight out on the handle, then remove the individual cartridge fuses from
the block using a cartridge-fuse puller. Test the fuses with a continuity
tester by probing the two ends.

Install a new fuse

Steps:
1.
Screw in a new plug fuse, or install a new cartridge fuse in the fuse block and
press the block back in. The replacement should always have the same rating
as the original.

2.
If all of the circuits have stopped working, remove and test the cartridge
fuses in the main fuse block, usually located at the top left (occasionally it's
reversed with the stove circuit on the top right). Replace any faulty ones.

Replace a fuse holder

Steps:
1.
More often than not the problem with cartridge fuses is related to loose clips
or rivets in the fuse block or fuse box, not the fuse itself. Replace a faulty
cartridge or have an electrician make other necessary repairs.

Overall Tips:

Always keep a flashlight handy in case the lights near the circuit panel are
not operating. It can be very dangerous to feel around.

Test the tester by touching the probe to the clip to make sure the light glows.

If a fuse element is burned in the middle and the ends are intact, an
overloaded circuit is the cause. Remove the appliance from that circuit.

If the element appears to have exploded and has blackened the underside of the
glass, a short is at fault. Investigate the cause of the short at the appliance,
receptacle or wiring.

Overall Warnings:

A circuit board with fuses pulled out is dangerous-- you run the risk of
potentially fatal shock. Use great care and never insert anything but a fuse
into
the open spaces.

Well, what I had in mind was a small (whatever size is deemed appropriate)

Your bedroom should have its own unit and then you could just cool that area

We live in a 16x90 mobile home and when the youngsters move out (if that
ever happens) we sure do not need to cool or heat the front half of this

[BlindHandyMan] How To Make Your Own Car Fluids and Sprays

2006-08-03 Thread Boyce, Ray
Hi
You can make an inexpensive anti-fog glass spray to keep your bathroom mirrors
and the inside of your car's windshield fog-free. This solution keeps
condensation
from collecting on these surfaces.

Steps:
1.
Pour 2 ounces of white vinegar in a medium sized bowl.

2.
Add 1 quart hot water.

3.
Dip a clean, lint-free cloth into mixture.

4.
Lightly wring out cloth.

5.
Wipe mirrors and the inside of car windshields with cloth.

6.
Allow to dry.

Tips:

Make sure mirrors and inside of windshield are clean before you put the
solution on them.
This is a great home remedy for keeping your car's windshield, windows and
mirrors frost-free on those cold winter days.

Steps:
1.
Mix 3 cups of vinegar and 1 cup of water in a bowl. Dip a clean cloth or rag
into the solution and gently wring out.

2.
Wipe all glass surfaces with the solution, including windshield, windows and
mirrors.

3.
Allow to dry naturally.

4.
Reapply solution after several freezing's throughout the cold months.

Tips:

If the sun is shining, allow the car to sit outside with the sun directly on
the glass to heat it up. Or put your vehicle in the garage after driving it
for several minutes; this will heat the air in the garage.

Make sure the glass and mirrors are clean before applying the mixture.
Why pay for windshield wiper fluid? It's easy and inexpensive to make.

Steps:
1.
Combine 3 c. household window cleaner with 1 gallon water in a pail.

2.
Mix well.

3.
Open the hood of your car.

4.
Pour the fluid in the windshield wiper fluid reservoir. (Use a funnel to avoid
spilling fluid.)

5.
Close the hood.

Tips:

Make sure to dilute the window cleaner or it will leave streaks.

Warnings:

Compare prices to make sure you spend less on window cleaner than you would on
formulated windshield wiper fluid.

If you live in a cold climate, make sure the homemade fluid won't freeze in the
tank, as this can damage cars. Make a small batch of fluid and place it
in the freezer overnight. If the fluid freezes, don't use it.

Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of liquid
HAND dishwashing detergent to washer reservoir and stir. This will eliminate
streaking and will not remove wax from paint
as ammonia does.
