Re: [BlindHandyMan] Applying finish to wood

2006-10-13 Thread Tom Fowle
Mickey,
You're an inspiration, much as I hate that word.

being a bit of a sailor, I knew what a spar is
so that's why I bought the stuff.

i also thought I'd dip the ends of the dowels in the can when
done cause it'd be hard to be sure the end grain was wel sealed.

Have you ever worked with spirit varnish as in used on some
musical instruments?
that dries very fast indeed.
Have done french polish and that's fun if you're quick.

do you worry about disposing of the used paper towels? I suppose
there isn't a large enough mess of them to worry about self
combustion.

thanks, may try that next weekend, when will have some time, if
the weather doesn't get too cool that is.

Jeff,

There is a fairly new product made by Rustolium, It is a proxy paint mix
you mix just before you use it. If I remember my wife had three hours to
apply it. You paint a area 4x4 and sprinkle on these small chips for a
sparkle affect. They tell me our basement looks great. You can buy this at
Home-Depot or other places that sales paint. The cost is $49 a gallon for
areas like a basement, or $59 a gallon in heavy traffic areas like a
garage. Had the stuff down for about a year and we love it. We plan on
doing the garage with it next year. The only thing the area you are painting
must be clean.

Hi Ed
This is what I found out about the heater
Q. What is the origin of this amazing heating element in the EdenPURET
Heater?
A. This advanced heating element was discovered accidentally by a man named
John Jones. He had a large old farmhouse that was impossible to heat. Jones
had a coal furnace in his basement. Jones placed a sheet of cured copper
near the furnace to store it. Cured copper is a type of copper that goes
through
an extensive heating process to give it special properties.

EdenPURET Quartz Infrared Portable Heater

After the fire went out in the coal furnace, Jones noticed that the sheet of
copper was heating his entire basement evenly, even though the furnace was
no longer putting out heat. He also was amazed as to how long the heat
stayed in the copper and continued to warm the room.

Jones was so taken back by this that he started to experiment. He formed a
company to develop a heating source out of this cured copper. But Jones had
a
number of children and he did not want a heating source that would cause a
fire or create other hazardous situations like creating carbon monoxide or
radiation.
He also did not want his children to get burned. To make a long story short,
through a great deal of research and development, Jones developed a heating
source that utilized commercial infrared quartz tubes.

Q. What advantages does infrared quartz tube heating source have over other
heating source products?

A. John Jones designed his heating source around the three most important
consumer benefits: economy, comfort, and safety. The final development of
this
infrared quartz heat source cannot be matched by any other heating system in
the world. In the EdenPURE system, electricity is used to generate infrared
light which, in turn, creates a very safe heat. Infrared is the safest form
of heat because it does not create carbon monoxide or harmful radiation.

And, most importantly, infrared heat does not reach a burning temperature.
After a great deal of research and development, very efficient infrared heat
chambers were developed that utilize three unique patented solid copper heat
exchangers in one EdenPURE Heater. Over 5 years of research, development and
real life field testing stand behind this heat source. It has now worked in
residential and commercial applications worldwide for over 25 years.

Q. Why is it that this quartz infrared heating source uses less energy to
create heat than other sources?

A. Actually, there is more than one reason. One of the primary reasons is
that heat at combustion level, which is what all other heat sources use,
causes
the heat to instantly rise to the ceiling. Therefore, the heat is not evenly
distributed, causing a very inefficient and uncomfortable heat source.

The EdenPURE Quartz Infrared Portable Heater does not use burning heat. Once
the heat exchanger absorbs the infrared heat, it exhales the heat into the
living area which is carried by the existing humidity in the air. This
causes the heat to travel rapidly and evenly throughout a room. In actual
studies,
photos using infrared lighting demonstrated that the heat was almost
perfectly even from floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall. The EdenPURE Quartz
Infrared
efficiency is based on the distribution of energized air, not on just fan
movement. This heat is coined as "soft heat" due to how comfortable it is.

Q. What are the other disadvantages of combustion heat sources?

A. Heat sources that are above the burning level have many unhealthy side
effects. One of these is that it creates dry, irritating indoor air. It also
burns
a great deal of oxygen in the air. If you remember, when you sit in front of
a fireplace or a portable heater or close to a heat source, you will
remember
yawning. This is because you are not getting enough oxygen.

This dry irritating heat and lack of oxygen dries out sinuses and mucus in
the throat, and makes people susceptible to disease. The lack of oxygen
causes
fatigue. Also, many combustible heat sources produce carbon monoxide, static
cling, and some produce radiation.

Q. So you're saying that children or pets can come up to this unit and touch
it and not be harmed?

A. That is absolutely correct. As a matter of fact, pets are actually drawn
to this heat because it is a natural source of heat, just like the sun heats
the earth. Animals are much more instinctive than humans. This heat not only
heats the air, but it also heats the objects in the room. It is a perfectly
balanced heat.

Q. How can a person cut their heating bill by up to 50% with the EdenPURE?

A. First, the EdenPURE uses less energy to create heat than other sources,
but that is just part of why

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Applying finish to wood

2006-10-13 Thread Mickey Fixsen
Tom,

This is an excellent example of how the "sighties" don't know didly!

You can do exactly what you had in mind with excellent results. As a matter of
fact, you will do better than your wife with a brush.

Spar varnish is an alkyd varnish with a ultraviolet inhivitor. In real speak,
this means it is an oil based varnish that is designed for outside use, in the
sunlight. It is called Spar Varnish because it was originally designed to be
used on masts and booms of sailboats, which are out in the elements.

I have done tons of this kind of finishing. I usually use a small diameter
screw, screwed into the end of the dowel and then wrap a thin wire around it to
use as a hanger on a line or other apparatus that I have for this purpose in
the shop.

All you need to do is dip your fingertips in the varnish and rub them up and
down on the dowel until the surface is covered. Wait overnight and sand
lightly, clean thuroughly, and repeat with another coat. Three or four coats
should be just fine. You may need to sand and reapply a new coat or two every
year or two, because nothing is impervious to all moisture and UV degredation.

As far as as whether it will harm your hands, no it won't. Actually, the oils
in the finish are good for your hands. For cleanup: Clean your hands with a
paper towel that has mineral spirits on it. Then either wash them with soap
and water, or use a waterless hand cleaner like Go-Jo or Goop. I usually use
Orange Go-Jo after cleaning with the mineral spirits, especially when using a
stain.

I really think that any type of gloves or rags, or other tools, just get in the
way of finishing for blind guys.

Go for it! You'll do just fine and you'll be proud of the results!

Good Luck-- Mickey

  Hi Mickey,
This is one of the most interesting posts I've seen on this list,
  and boy that's saying something!

I'd always wondered about doing this but all the sighties say no,
  you'll get a mess.

so here's a particular situation I'd love your comments on, it's
  probably easy.

I've got a bunch of 5/8Ths inch dowels I want to use as security
  sticks in sliding aluminum windows.

I bought spar varnish for them hoping it would last against the
  accumulating moisture better than most.

My wife hasn't got round to brushing it on, so how should I
approach this? I've got them with a small nail in one end so I can
hang them up from a cloths line.

My thought would be to just dip fingers in the varnish and wrap
the fingers all way round each dowell and draw down from the top,
then when run out of material, dip again.

Thin coats with a quick sand between.

What think, and many many thanks for this discription, it is
  really interesting.

  Bill,

I haven't used the new wipe on polyurethane finishes yet. However, I have
used many other finishes by applying them with my bare hand. I have used alkyd
varnish, Tung oil, polyurethane varnish, latex paint, alkyd paint, polycrylic
(water based) varnish and even lacquer. I get very good results with most of
these products. I think the most difficult to use is the water based poly
varnish. It dries too fast.

I prefer using a bare hand rather than a rag, or other tool, because I can
feel how much and where the finish is being applied. The oil based finishes
work especially well. One thing to watch out for and be extra careful about is
along edges and at corners. The material has a tendency to accumulate in these
areas. They do the same with a brush and many sighted people end up with ridges
along edges and puddles or drips in corners. It takes a bit of practice (like
with anything), but it works very well for a blind guy.

The technique is to just dip the pads of your fingers of one hand in the
finish and then apply it to the part. You can use a circular motion to work the
finish around and spread it out. I usually use a finish stroke in the direction
of the grain before I move to another section. Don't put on too much and keep
moving along. Several thin coats are better than one heavy one. Be careful not
to drip any finish from your fingers onto an area that you have already
finished. I would suggest starting with an oil based product to begin with.
They dry much slower and you will find them very easy to use. For polyurethane
varnish, I really like the fast drying Minwax oil based polyurethane. Some
brands of polyurethane take forever to dry and I don't care for those.

For stain, I have found that Minwax Wood Finish works very well. It needs to
be stirred up real good before use. Then, I do use a clean piece of cloth to
dip in the stain and apply it. You can put it on a bit heavy and then after a
few minutes, go back over it with a clean dry cloth to even it out and mop up
any excess. It is a thin penetrating stain that I get excellent results with. I
don't think a blind guy can get very good results with any of the water based
stains.

Your hands can easily be cleaned. Use mineral spirits (paint thinner) for oil
based finishes and warm soap and water for water based finishes. You might want
to clean your hands along the way, if material seems to be drying on them as
you are working.

I have used the bare hand technique for about 40 years. I have done finish
work on everything from boats to fine furniture, and everything in between. I
am very particular about the quality of my finish and get rave comments.
Whenever I am in furniture stores, or even houses, I am always feeling the
quality of the finish work. I am usually very disappointed in what I find out
there. I have to say that I do tons better finish work than most everything
that I look at.

Give your bare hand a try. I think you will like the results.

  Good Luck

that sits on top of a dog crate so as to provide flat work surface in an
office. I don't think I want to paint the thing, but it probably needs to have
some finish applied.

I've heard that there's a product called "clearcoat" that can be applied
using a cloth and which doesn't streak. Anybody used this, and can they talk
about their technique?

  Thanks.

I changed the thermo couple on my furnace yesterday under the supervision of
a good friend. Other than it being like most jobs where there's virtually
no room to work at all it wasn't too bad all things considered. I sort of
knew how to do it but not ever having tried before I was a bit reluctant
without somebody there to tell me if I was doing something wrong or
whatever. The probe end on the old thermo couple is for sure really burned
out so it was the reason my heat didn't work yesterday at all.

My first official act as a list owner was to promote Bob Gilman to moderator
this morning. Bob has been a huge help to me running the JAWS Users list
and I'm sure he'll make a fine addition to the moderating team here as well.
So if he says put it back on topic remember I've given him the authority to
act. This list has been going great for quite a while now and I'm really
glad about that for sure. Thanks guys and girls for making my job easy on
here. I'm just getting my hands in to a lot of things lately like the files

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Quartz Infrared Heaters

2006-10-13 Thread Ray Boyce

A. First, the EdenPURE uses less energy to create heat than other sources,
but that is just part of why it will cut a person's heating bill. The
EdenPURE
will heat a room in minutes. Therefore, you can turn the heat down in your
house to as low as 50 degrees, but the room you are occupying, which has the
EdenPURE, will be warm and comfortable. The EdenPURE is portable. When you
move

Re: [BlindHandyMan] water sealing paint

2006-10-13 Thread rj

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Applying finish to wood

2006-10-13 Thread Dale Leavens
I have applied a lot of finishes with a cloth over the years and I always
tend to over work the finish. You wipe the finish on selecting a pattern
which is likely to succeed in not missing any of the area and you work from
wet to dry and you move on fairly quickly, don't try to rub it in.

The other mistake is to apply too thick. A number of things happen, either a
film forms on the top which retards the evaporation of solvents below the
film layer so it takes ages to dry and even longer to properly cure. The
prolonged stickiness permits fly droppings or what ever else is drifting
about in the air to stick.

The best results are to apply thin coats many times with a gentle buff of
very fine 400 or 600 grit paper between coats. Even very capable sighted
brush application will leave brush marks.

If you miss bits you will get them with subsequent applications. If possible
I work from the middle of a field toward the edges, it permits you to pick
up any excess or drips along the corners or over the edges.

As you work your hands will pick up some of the chemistry so you will loose
the feeling of cool or liquid because you will not be able to feel the
evaporation. Trust that you are getting coverage and if you don't, you will
be going over it with another coat anyway.

Living in Hawaii, I think I may be an expert on this subject... grin.

I have pets and for about 15 years I have used something called Harris
Pills. I think they have other names, but basically they are boric acid
tablets. The powder is really messy and gets gummy if it is in a moist
place. The pills can be dropped behind a refrigerator, stove, washer, be put
inside a cabinet... You only need one tablet per room and they need to be
replaced about every six months at first. Now I put them out once a year
just in case.

One of their favorite ways to come into a home is in paper grocery bags and
cardboard boxes. You can't see them because often they are hidden in a fold
somewhere or their eggs are in there and then they hatch. I think the
tablets cost about $3 for two hundred, practically a lifetime supply.
Good luck..

[BlindHandyMan] water sealing paint

2006-10-13 Thread Jeff Kisecker
Hi:

Quite some time ago, we discussed sealing a concrete floor with some kind of
water sealing paint. Can someone please tell me what that product would be
called?

Thanks much, Jeff

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Applying finish to wood

2006-10-13 Thread Dale Leavens
Tom,

I have taken to using hand wipe poly from Minwax. It is not spar varnish but
will seal fully so will work just fine. I just wipe it on with a rag and
when dry a very gentle rub just to make a tooth or knock off any sharp bits.

You can apply spar varnish that way too but it is a bear to get off of your
hands.

I do have some stuff they call liquid gloves from Lee Valley which is a
barrier cream, that helps a lot but you will want a cloth, cheese cloth will
do but pull away any free threads from where you cut it so they don't come
free and stick in the finish.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Quartz Infrared Heaters

2006-10-13 Thread William Stephan
Ed:
I just bought an infrared heater to heat a three-seasons room. Mine's a
Suncloud, not quartz. It has four 675 watt (I think) infrared bulbs mounted
below a heat exchanger with a small fan. Since the thing draws 1,500 watts,
it's only rated at like 5,300 BTUs or so, but the manufacturer claims that the
combination of the "special" heat exchanger and the fact that it's infrared
cause it to deliver that amount of heat very efficiently.

We had the thing on last evening, and we got down to just about freezing. It
kept the room very comfortable at that temperature, and didn't run continuously.

I don't know how it'll do when it's zero, but it's a lot better than either the
fan-forced heater I have or the oil-filled one we used last year, which
incidentally died right at the end of the season despite being new.

The only bad thing about this is the cost. I paid like $530.00 for the thing.
The unit I bought and the bulbs are guaranteed for three years.

Anybody know if you can use a light probe to check infrared bulbs?

Good luck Ed.

I've been looking at quartz infrared heaters to help supplement my

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Applying finish to wood

2006-10-13 Thread Tom Fowle
Hi Mickey,
This is one of the most interesting posts I've seen on this list,
and boy that's saying something!

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Bugs

2006-10-13 Thread Victor Gouveia
I once read that you could draw a chalk line around crevices, baseboards, doors
and windows, even edges of countertops. The bugs or roaches would kill
themselves trying to lick it off or something like that because it clogs their
pores or something like that.

I even hear there's a type of chalk with poison in it, and the roaches track
the stuff to their lair, and it kills off all the other critters with them.

I remember when I was a kid, we used to buy this bug and roach chalk, and we
would put it on the insides of cupboards and along the corners or holes where
we knew they would get in.

In any case, you might want to check with a place like Home Depot, lows, or
Rona, if you live in Canada, or even one of the smaller type hardware stores to
see if they have this chalk. It used to be very common.

Victor

Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] Applying finish to wood

Bill,

I haven't used the new wipe on polyurethane finishes yet. However, I have used
many other finishes by applying them with my bare hand. I have used alkyd
varnish, Tung oil, polyurethane varnish, latex paint, alkyd paint, polycrylic
(water based) varnish and even lacquer. I get very good results with most of
these products. I think the most difficult to use is the water based poly
varnish. It dries too fast.

I prefer using a bare hand rather than a rag, or other tool, because I can feel
how much and where the finish is being applied. The oil based finishes work
especially well. One thing to watch out for and be extra careful about is
along edges and at corners. The material has a tendency to accumulate in these
areas. They do the same with a brush and many sighted people end up with
ridges along edges and puddles or drips in corners. It takes a bit of practice
(like with anything), but it works very well for a blind guy.

The technique is to just dip the pads of your fingers of one hand in the finish
and then apply it to the part. You can use a circular motion to work the
finish around and spread it out. I usually use a finish stroke in the
direction of the grain before I move to another section. Don't put on too much
and keep moving along. Several thin coats are better than one heavy one. Be
careful not to drip any finish from your fingers onto an area that you have
already finished. I would suggest starting with an oil based product to begin
with. They dry much slower and you will find them very easy to use. For
polyurethane varnish, I really like the fast drying Minwax oil based
polyurethane. Some brands of polyurethane take forever to dry and I don't care
for those.

I don't think a blind guy can get very good results with any of the water based
stains.

Your hands can easily be cleaned. Use mineral spirits (paint thinner) for oil
based finishes and warm soap and water for water based finishes. You might
want to clean your hands along the way, if material seems to be drying on them
as you are working.

Good Luck

  Folks:

I recently built a sort of table top out of 2 x 4s and 3/4 inch birch plywood
that sits on top of a dog crate so as to provide flat work surface in an
office. I don't think I want to paint the thing, but it probably needs to have
some finish applied.

I've heard that there's a product called "clearcoat" that can be applied
using a cloth and which doesn't streak. Anybody used this, and can they talk
about their technique?

  Thanks.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Bugs

2006-10-13 Thread brice mijares
spray more than likely won't work, unless you make contact with the roach.
Your probably going to need some professional help here. Someone will have
to spray this powder called Boric acid in the cracks and crevices where the
roaches congregate. That's usually around moisture.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Applying finish to wood

2006-10-13 Thread Mickey Fixsen

Some brands of polyurethane take forever to dry and I don't care
for those.

[BlindHandyMan] Bugs

2006-10-13 Thread Steve & Shannon
Hi All,

Does any one know of a good bug spray that you can spray around the base
boards for roaches that will not harm pets?

[BlindHandyMan] furnace job

2006-10-13 Thread David Ferrin
I changed the thermo couple on my furnace yesterday under the supervision of
a good friend. Other than it being like most jobs where there's virtually
no room to work at all it wasn't too bad all things considered. I sort of
knew how to do it but not ever having tried before I was a bit reluctant
without somebody there to tell me if I was doing something wrong or
whatever. The probe end on the old thermo couple is for sure really burned
out so it was the reason my heat didn't work yesterday at all.

[BlindHandyMan] there is a new moderator added to the team

2006-10-13 Thread David Ferrin
My first official act as a list owner was to promote Bob Gilman to moderator
this morning. Bob has been a huge help to me running the JAWS Users list
and I'm sure he'll make a fine addition to the moderating team here as well.
So if he says put it back on topic remember I've given him the authority to
act. This list has been going great for quite a while now and I'm really
glad about that for sure. Thanks guys and girls for making my job easy on
here. I'm just getting my hands in to a lot of things lately like the files
page ETC, so it seemed some extra help around here might not be a bad idea.
