Re: [BlindHandyMan] click ruler or rototmatic ruler

2006-10-20 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi Mickey,

It sounds like both these devices take a little effort to get a
measurement. Which of the two would you say is faster to use? With
most of the things I do, I'm willing to sacrifice accuracy in favor
of speed. Thanks.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

Rob,

There really is not a better. As others have said there is an
accuracy difference. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

The Clickrule is faster to adjust than the Rotomatic to get your measurement.

The Clickrule will do inside measurements more easily than the
Rotomatic (in most circumstances), just because of its design.

The Rotomatic will lie completely flat against your work piece so
that you get better measurements. Because of the 2 stop blocks and
the knob on the Clickrule, it won't always be lying right against
your workpiece and, therefore, your accuracy may suffer.

The clickrule can actually have better than a 1/16 accuracy,
especially when transfering measurements. The lock knob can be
locked between the detents (which are 1/16 apart) for this added accuracy.

The way you read the two devices is a bit different, too. The
Rotomatic is read at the 1/2 increments when the raised thread is
flush (you just can't feel it) with the edge of the large
rectangular nut and the mark is on the same side as the raised 1/2
marks. The Clickrule 1/2 increments are read with the raised
thread left so that you can still feel it next to the body of the
tool. To check this with either tool:

1. Run the big rectangular nut on the Rotomatic all the way to the
zero end of the tool and have it flush with the end with the mark on
the same side as the raised 1/2 marks. With the Click rule, flush
the end of the threaded piece with the body of the tool (the zero point.
2. Now with the Rotomatic, rotate the large rectangular nut exactly
8 full turns and you will see how it ligns up with the first 1/2
raised mark. On the Clickrule, move the body of the tool exactly 8
clicks to lengthen it and you will see how it aligns with the first
raised 1/2 mark.

They both use 3/8 diameter extension rods, but the thread of the
attaching screw is different between the two rules. They both use a
Number 10 screw, but the Rotomatic uses a 10-24 coarse thread and
the Clickrule uses a 10-32 fine thread. I have both rules and have
changed all of the extension rods to the 10-24 thread, so that all
are interchangeable. I, also, make some of my own extension rods
which are up to 36 long. I have actually used these tools to well
over 20 feet in length.

The Clickrule has 2 stop blocks on it so that you can read either up
to 6 inches or 12 inches. You will have to remember which stop
block you are using for each particular measurement. There is ,
also, a 1/4 offset that you will have to get used to with both
tools. This comes into play depending on which side of the stop
block or the rectangular nut you are measuring to. You'll get the hang of it.

Good luck

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Files page suggestion

 Hi all.

It seems to me that it might be helpful if there were files added to the
Files Page that contain some of the information that is frequently sought
here, regarding where to buy specialized tools.

For instance, The subject of where to buy the following things have come
up recently. Things like the Clickrule, Rotomatic, talking multimeter,
talking tape measure, , and many more items that are either specialized
for the blind or extremely blind friendly.

Maybe a file could be added for each item, as it comes up on the list and
would be there for all , for future reference.

For example, there could be a file entitled Where to buy the Clickrule.
The body of the file would then contain the appropriate information.
Another one could be Where to buy a talking multimeter. And so forth.

Another file that might be worthwhile is our current discussion talking
about the pros and cons of the Clickrule and the Rotomatic. It would
always be there for future reference and we wouldn't have to rewrite it
each time the subject comes up. People could be referred to the Files
Page for, at least, a first reference.

I realize this would take time for someone to do, but it seems to be
frequently asked info and might be worth the effort. It would be
information specifically geared toward us blind guys, too.

Now, please don't anyone get all upset over this suggestion. It is simply
 a suggestion and nothing more.

 Thanks-- Mickey

[BlindHandyMan] list guide lines

After talking it over we don't see any reason at all to modify or change the
list guide lines as they stand at this time. This is because the majority

going to write something a bit more fancy but this should get the sentiment
across at least. So keep building, repairing and maintaining, and thank

Well, I've been whining for a year or so about how much I need one of those
Tissot vibrating watches that cost $400 or so. And, my wife I believe was
going to buy me one for Xmas. Yesterday though, I decided I could save
money and really be happier buying a compressor, which I've also been
  whining about not having.

So, after I got the clearance from my wife, I checked around a bit and
finally bought a small relatively inexpensive one from Harbor Freight.

I was able to get the compressor, hose, coupling set, blow gun, 3/8 drill
and 3/8 air ratchet for about $160.00, and that includes shipping.
And, since I saved us so much money, I'm going to have another 30 amp line
put on the breaker box in the basement, which is something else I've wanted
  for a while.

BTW, I got really good service from the folks at Harbor Freight.

Both prices are quite substantial but worth it, I would think, if the

Ed, you're in a jam. How about promising Thanksgiving dinner out somewhere?
Xmas maybe
BTW, you guys probably know this, but the stop blocks on the clickrule are 1/4
inch thick. It's handy to know that for inside measurings.

Hi Mickey,

Both prices are quite substantial but worth it, I would think, if the
rulers are accessible and work well. I already own a Tissot
vibrating watch so what the hell do I use to bargain with my wife!

Take care,

Tom you mentioned that maybe a sighted person watching a film on a blind
person doing a task should rather be viewed as Oh so that's how they do it,
instead of Wow how amazing. I am paraphrasing hear but another thought I
have had and I sure would like to do it is to go to a mechanic school and
show people how to do things when the trouble light that they are using is
nothing more then trouble
My wifes cousin is a much better mechanic then I am but there has been a
time or two over at his place when we were working on either my vehichles or
his and it was just easier for me to do some thing because I am used to
working by feel than he is. Just a fact of life.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Seeing is believing, Not

2006-10-20 Thread Ralph Supernaw
I just did something you won't want to include on your video. I am building
a bookcase headboard.

This afternoon I put the sides, one of the shelves, and a front panel
together. Having learned from my mistakes and other people's advise, I
measured the diagonals to make sure everything was square. And, amazingly
enough, it was.

Then I take the piece of quarter inch plywood that will serve as the back to
the headboard and lay it down. Oh no, something isn't right! It fits just
right at the bottom but is too narrow at the top.

After giving it some thought (clearly not enough thought) I realize the top
was a quarter inch too long and so forced the sides to spread too far
because I screwed them together at each end of the top.

Not a problem, I'll just cut a quarter inch off the top piece and everything
will be fine.

As a matter of fact, the back piece did fit fine. Then I got the bright
idea of using a square to make sure all the corners are 90 degrees.

As my square informed me that both top corners were greater than 90 degrees,
it hit me!! I had somehow messed up when cutting the quarter inch plywood
back. The top had been the right length after all. But now it's a quarter
inch too short.

I should have known when I left for the Post Office without the mail and so
had to go back and get it and then left the post office without getting the
package waiting for us that it was not a day to put much stock in my ability
to think.

So, while I might make the blind bloopers, you don't want me on a video
made, at least in part, to show sighted people how competent we blind folks
really are.

Ralph

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Seeing is believing, Not

2006-10-20 Thread Robert J. Moore
May be
we could look at it this way.
No need to show that we are perfect, because no one is. Blind or sighted.
But surely can show that we are capable.
Well most of the time.
One time Me and some friends replaced a head on a car. They could not get it
to fire. I was sure that the cranc shaft and the other part that I think
drives the distributer was correct but the can was off. We dragged the car
back to my house and over the next couple of days I commence to getting the
cam in the correct position.
I got the car running and was oh so proud of myself. I was talking to my
brother on the phone and as I was talking I found a disconnected wire for
the speedometer and in the process of looking at some other things I took
off that big air hose that leads to the air cleaner. I think it is called
the air ram or some thing. well all was good untill we took it out for a
test drive. After the car started on fire and we got that put out, I
realized that I did not put that part back in place and it got cautht up in
the fan and some how a fire ensude.
Not sure what is the moral of the story hear. maybe it is this. Now that you
have the head board completed and ready to put in place. don't smoke in bed.

I can't tell you how often I have cut a board more than once only to find it
was still too short.

I just did something you won't want to include on your video. I am
building
 a bookcase headboard.

This afternoon I put the sides, one of the shelves, and a front panel
together. Having learned from my mistakes and other people's advise, I
measured the diagonals to make sure everything was square. And, amazingly
 enough, it was.

Then I take the piece of quarter inch plywood that will serve as the back
 to
the headboard and lay it down. Oh no, something isn't right! It fits
 just
right at the bottom but is too narrow at the top.

After giving it some thought (clearly not enough thought) I realize the
 top
was a quarter inch too long and so forced the sides to spread too far
because I screwed them together at each end of the top.

Not a problem, I'll just cut a quarter inch off the top piece and
 everything
 will be fine.

As a matter of fact, the back piece did fit fine. Then I got the bright
idea of using a square to make sure all the corners are 90 degrees.

As my square informed me that both top corners were greater than 90
 degrees,
it hit me!! I had somehow messed up when cutting the quarter inch plywood
back. The top had been the right length after all. But now it's a
 quarter
 inch too short.

I should have known when I left for the Post Office without the mail and
 so
had to go back and get it and then left the post office without getting
 the
package waiting for us that it was not a day to put much stock in my
 ability
 to think.

So, while I might make the blind bloopers, you don't want me on a video
made, at least in part, to show sighted people how competent we blind
 folks
 really are.

 Ralph

[BlindHandyMan] air tools

2006-10-20 Thread Robert J. Moore
I may have mentioned before that I had recently aquired an air impact
wrench. It was from a locle give away yahoo group.
the post said may need work but could probably be used as is.
It was not until I went and bought a half inch to a 3 8ths inch adapter so I
would not have to by all new sockets. I went to put the adapter on and
discovered that the check ball was sheared off and hence the adapter does
not stay locked on. could be very dangerous.
Is there a practicle and cost effective way to remmity this? I hate to
throw it on the scrap heap but since it was free I am prepared to do so.
However reluctently.

When your out flow ecceeds your income, your up keep leeds to your down
fall.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Seeing is believing, Not

2006-10-20 Thread Tom Fowle
Ralph,
On the other hand, what we want to show is that we do things, and
try to do things. Best would be to make them see us as much like
themselves, capable of messing up too.

when we, at Smith-kettlewell RERC, had a research project that
was really a training program to teach blind folks to solder etc.
we never criticized anybody for deciding this was something they
didn't want to do or couldn't do.

we must demand the right to fail also, we're not all 'superblind'
All you gotta do is give an honest try, success is not manditory.

Now for the good old top stretcher! GRIN
