Re: [BlindHandyMan] Rewiring a House

2006-10-28 Thread Tom Fowle
available with decorative covers etc. but i think it is up to
your local code whether or not they permit it. The entire
building in which I work was redone that way in 1998 even
including offices and conference rooms etc. where looks mattered.

If the system is that old you'll probably have to replace the
breaker panel and service feed also and that should be done
professionally unless you have a lot of experience. It's gotta
pass an inspection when done so you have to know how to meet code.

Our sympathies, it's a huge job.

That actually is probably the safest way to insure the proper sequence. only
trouble is rethreading the wires can be a bit of a pain. Last time I changed
plug wires I think it took me about 20 minutes. Well thanks all for your
good suggestions. Unless some one has any more really good ideas I will put
this thread to bed.
I am going to chew on this one for a while. When I come up with the perfect

Re: [BlindHandyMan] insulation in a crawlspace

2006-10-28 Thread Dale Leavens
Well r30 is 6 inches of fiberglass bats but you would need some structure to
support that I think you would probably be better running two layers of 2
inch extruded poly, up here it is the blue stuff, closed chamber I believe
it is also referred to.

For selected places like under your bedroom you might like to add bats
between the joists but if you get it too cold down there you run the risk of
freezing water pipes so do monitor and bear that in mind.

If a new heating system is in your future you might consider under the floor
radiant heat with insulation below that. They instal Pex plastic heating
pipe in the joist bays really nice and with the insulation below it pretty
well all the heat is reserved for the living space.

There isn't a lot of value though in insulating the crawl space if you will
also be ventilating it to keep it dry, maybe where you are that isn't so
necessary though.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Rewiring a House

2006-10-28 Thread Dale Leavens
I have done a lot of that here, mostly though I was able to open a wall and
recover it with drywall. Cutting plaster & lath is hard to do without making
a mess of it and it destroys saws.

I would like to know though how you pull cable into an existing box. The old
ones usually have a sort of bayonet fitting with a pinch screw arrangement
into the box and are inaccessible from inside the box.

Anyway, a lot of it is just damn hard and dirty work and tough on the hands.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] insulation in a crawlspace

2006-10-28 Thread Dale Leavens
I think I would just glue more foam over what is already there. Something
like liquid nail. I have purchased it in gallon cans but I have also had it
in tubes like calking. Go around the edge of the sheet and then an 'X'
across the middle. The hardest part is bracing them in place while the
adhesive sets up. I would overlap existing seams and use the extruded foam
it is a lot more wind proof. What are the walls of the crawl space made of?
Concrete block I am guessing. If a wooden knee wall then you could easily
attach 'Z' molding to hold the sheets, could do through cement too but it is
harder and so long as the original foam is sticking I would just go over it.

How much depends on where you live and how much you need and how much money
you are willing to spend. $1500 though will buy way more than you need. I
seem to remember that 2 inch panels makes R10 and if you tape the seams it
is air tight. The stuff I have used came in 8 foot by 2 foot sheets, cuts
well with a hand saw. You could go two layers of inch and a half or just
about what ever you like.

With a dirt floor make yourself a few braces to wedge against the sheets
while the adhesive cures it may take a while since the foam won't breathe.

The trouble though with uncovered foam is fire risk.

The canned foam I only suggest as a way to fill cracks or voids to keep air
infiltration out. Glass fiber bats for cavities like the ends of joist bays
although you can cut snug fitting foam board provided you can make it fit
tightly.

Just where do you live? How much insulation are you needing?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Rewiring a House

2006-10-28 Thread R & S Enterprises
Yes the best route is to disconnect the old wiring at the main panel box and
cut it back everywhere you run into it. Check the price of scrap copper and
new wire and you will probably consider pulling out as much as possible to
sell as scrap.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Rewiring a House

2006-10-28 Thread R & S Enterprises
As one person has mentioned the surface raceway is one solution. Let's look
at traditional methods. Some things to consider. Is there insulation in
the exterior walls? Is the attic accessible? Is this a one story house?
Is there a unfinished basement or workable crawl space? If there is
workable spaces new holes can be drilled and romex ran. You didn't mention
is there were metal switch and outlet boxees or are the devices mounted to
the lath? Answers to these will allow a better suggestion.
Ron
I remember doing a lot of these old house rewires back in the seventys in
the middle of summer.

Yes surface raceway is one way of doing this. It is a litttle pricey. It
is available in metal or plastic.Wiremold is the metal brand and Panduit
makes the plastic style.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Maybe ergent help request

2006-10-28 Thread Jim Ruby
Lol. Ok. Sounds cool when I flush. I'll eat and drink a lot and enjoy the
flush with the added scratching behind my wall untill it is dead and
hopefully he will just wash away since he had to come down from the rough
and is only in the vent part anyway and just hope for the best. If things
start backing up well we'll cross that bridge when it is time and if he does
it will be war on the things that walk across my rough. I'll sit in the
rooms and shoot at the noises I hear above me.
Should make for some added venting and maybe I can put in a sky light if I
get enough leaks.

Thanks.

In spite of what you may have been told or understand, sewer gas is rarely
dangerous. Occasionally some twit dumps something nasty including gasoline,
several years ago a railroad car dribbled gasoline into the storm sewers of
Timmins near here which eventually produced somewhat spectacular explosions
and fountains of flames out of the man hole and grills in the streets and
roads. That notwithstanding, the gas can be unpleasant.

That though isn't a major concern, blocking the drain is probably more
worrying. You probably do have a bird, I think I would be inclined to try to

flush him on through, there isn't any reasonable way you are likely to
rescue him anyway unless maybe by removing the toilet and perhaps dragging
it out with your hand well gloved and assuming your hand will fit. Mine just

barely fits into the standard three inch sewer pipe and I am a small man. He

will bite you if he can so you will want a substantial glove, I doubt your
elbow will make it around the various bends and so on.

There may be a cleaning eye near where the critter is but how likely is
that.

If the creature isn't dying of sewer gas, neither will you.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] insulation in a crawlspace

2006-10-28 Thread Jeff Kisecker
Dale:

Thanks again, the floor is a dirt floor, I am planning on putting a vapor
barrier over the dirt, when I do the insulation. I have used some of that
spray foam in a can, it expands, but it would take a hell of a lot of that
to accomplish what I need.

Could I use fiberglass insulation and tape it to the 1/2 inch Styrofoam that
is along the concrete walls?

Thanks, Jeff

Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] insulation in a crawlspace

Some depends on the height of the crawl space, if he has to spray from his
hands and knees well I don't think I would do it for $1500. there is air
quality and all sorts.

Is there anything else in there besides plumbing? Sometimes a good answer is
to insulate under the floor wrapping over plumbing to keep it on the warm
side and just let the rest get as cold as it likes. This is not so good if
the furnace or water heater is in there. There is no point though in heating
the area even a little if it is unused.

The first rule is to seal the cracks, these happen where structural members
meet, under the floor and against the sill plate, between the sill and the
sill plate or rim joist however you prefer to call it, where the sill sits
on the foundation. Calking works, spray in foam where spaces are of any size
or even poke rope in there. Stop air moving in and out and you make your
biggest savings.

Carefully cut and fit fiber glass bat insulation along the rim joist fitting
it between the sill and the under side of the floor. It should fill the
space but not be compressed. I cut the stuff by squeezing it along the edge
of a table, usually covered with a sheet of scrap and another over the top
then slice it by sawing with a wavy serrated bread knife, something not too
coarse toothed so it cuts rather than shreds. You cut several squares to fit
between the joists where their ends come up against the rim joist. You could
cut foam sheet but it is very hard to get a good fit still, it does a nice
job if you are patient enough.

Now along the edge of the sill where it meets the foundation you may not
need all that much if the junction is well calked, I might consider a strip
of foam you could screw in place through big broad washers or through a
board of strapping.

If insulating the floor is a good option then screw strapping across the
bottom of the joists then just slip the appropriately sized bats between the
joists. Depending on your area maybe 8 inches or more. You might form a bit
of a frame under plumbing so you can keep it on the warm side of the
insulation. I really like this solution since it keeps floors warm while
preserving the heat to the living space. You can then thoroughly ventilate
the crawl space for even better health and hygiene.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Keeping track of plug wires

2006-10-28 Thread Robert J. Moore
those are good ideas I do use braille and I like the dimo tape idea. I think
I can make some tags that I can twist tie on the wires.
Now what do I do for the cap? I suppose I could cut some boots off an old
set of wires and tie or glue a braille tag on each one.
unless any one has a better idea.
thanks

[BlindHandyMan] labor saving comment

2006-10-28 Thread Jennifer Jackson
I should clarify that my labor saving comments about the leaf blowers were not
really targeted at someone. It was really more a comment on how our society
spends so much time and effort to create labor saving devices that help pollute
our environment, while we are all getting more over weight and out of shape. I
am guilty of this too.

My husband said he had to have a weed eater to do the yard right. Instead of
just doing it myself, I got the man a weed eater. Though ironically he
traveled so much this summer that we ended up working out a deal with our
neighbor. He used our mower and weed eater to do his yard and another rental
property he was responsible for, in exchange for doing our yard too. My
favorite part was that I didn't have to nag anybody about doing the yard as my
neighbor is a perfectionist and kept all three yards tidy all summer.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Rewiring a House

2006-10-28 Thread Jennifer Jackson
They are making some attractive conduit for this these days. many people
use it so the wires are not hanging out all over the place when they run
them to computers and entertainment centers. I agree it is not the best
esthetically for a full rewiring, but then neither is knocking out all the
walls or having an electrical fire. My favorite suggestion is the
wainscoting one. Although it wouldn't be in my budget either.

Can you just disconnect all the old wires from the electric source and leave
them?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Keeping track of plug wires

2006-10-28 Thread Dale Leavens
If you use braille perhaps numbered DymoTape labels wrapped around the
wires?

Maybe spring clips one on each wire but further along each wire in sequence?
clips like those bulldog things they use to hold paper together. They could
be labeled with numbers for reuse I suppose.

Just a couple of ideas.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] insulation in a crawlspace

2006-10-28 Thread Dale Leavens

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Rewiring a House

2006-10-28 Thread Dale Leavens
Ah yes, I never think of surface mount. Few people these days consider it
esthetically acceptable in a home environment but it is often used
industrially or inn work shops and things like that. It is a solution though
and a good one where the appearance isn't critical.

[BlindHandyMan] Keeping track of plug wires

2006-10-28 Thread Robert J. Moore
What is the best way to mark the plug wires and distributor cap to
insure they go back together the same way they came apart.
When I change the cap I just move them one at a time and it is not a problem
but if I need to remove the distributor that is a different story.

Messing up the firing order is a night mare to say the least.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Maybe ergent help request

2006-10-28 Thread Dale Leavens

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Maybe ergent help request

2006-10-28 Thread R & S Enterprises
I don't believe the critter will cause any damage to the piping, nor will
there be a danger of sewer gas getting into the house.. Hopefully it will
not get further down into the drain then you face a posibility of the drain
sttopping up. How to get it out? Good question, some pipe disassembly
somewhere.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Rewiring a House

2006-10-28 Thread Dale Leavens
You are correct, most of the time the wire passes through holes or is
stapled to studs and you cannot use it to pull new wire. I wonder though if
you have the old knob & tube? Is the wire in pairs or single conductor
lines?

Usually you would have to rewire with Romex, an armor clad wire since you
cannot fix it to studs as you go along inside the walls. You would have to
check with your local authority for proper code. It is a difficult job
requiring loads of patience and good knees, you seem to spend all your time
crouched in one corner or another fishing cable from and through impossible
bays, holes and so on and there is the problem of the old boxes, getting in
and out of them or removing them and replacing with new.

Usually this is the sort of job you want to do with a major renovation where
you can have the walls and ceilings open.

Sometimes, if you choose to decorate say with panels to chair rail height
you can knock hell out of the lower half of walls and rewire as you replace
the lower finish with something new leaving only things like light switches
and for sure overhead fixtures. Sometimes though you have access to them
overhead which makes that part easier.

If this is knob and tube then there is nothing for it but to replace. You
can't figure out where that stuff goes and any cut might wipe out everything
or might not even be noticed. It is difficult to work with especially since
you can't tell where it goes.

It is called knob & tube because they drilled holes through things like
joists then inserted ceramic tubes with a ball on the end to keep the tube
from moving all the way through, they used two part ceramic knobs with a
screw through to hold the single wire to the face of studs and joists where
we now use staples and connections including 'Y' connections were made with
solder and wrapped with tape.Single strands of wire snake all over the
place.

There are a few ways these shower units go together, some screw the tail
down into a fitting which is attached to the top of the sewer. These use a
special wrench I have never owned, someone else will know what it is called
but you pull the strainer out of the drain in the bottom of the shower and
you may find a sleeve that fits into the fixture below and forms the flange
on the floor of the shower, it has two bits sticking into the stream which
the special wrench pegs fit into and screw out or in.

Some have a thread underneath like a large nut which screws over the
protruding thread below the shower.

I have a feeling though that tightening it up isn't really what has to
happen. It sounds to me like the shower floor isn't well supported and it
bows under the weight of occupants. Over time this flexing has caused the
floor material to fail.

You probably want to disassemble the drain then patch the floor. Assuming it
is fiberglass and it may well be, many now are actually vinyl or some other
plastic. Figure out the extent and direction of the crack, rough up the
surface under the pan either side of the crack then apply the resin mixed
with hardener and roll on a length of the fiber tape and press it firmly
into the resin then apply more resin. I like those little 'J' rollers for
the job, helps to keep a brush from pulling the tape or random mat away from
the site.

You may wish to apply more than one layer of glass you won't need a lot of
the polyester, enough to saturate the glass is all.

You need good ventilation and keep it off of your skin, cover or tie or both
your hair, protect your eyes.

Then reassemble the drain. The resin will probably take a day to set up
thoroughly depending on the temperature.

Reinforce the support for the shower pan so it doesn't flex and crack again.

I am not so sure about the plastic pans, test it with a little resin first I
suppose to be sure it doesn't eat the plastic. If you rough it up a little
with medium sand paper 80 grit or so fiberglass should stick to it if it
doesn't eat it.

You might prefer to consider changing the entire shower stall.

[BlindHandyMan] Maybe ergent help request

2006-10-28 Thread Jim Ruby
Hi,

Today I noticed a bird or something that sounds like he can scratch very
well behind my toilet.
What is behind there?
My plumbing vent on the rough. So he must of fell down there.
Now since it is the weekend I can not get no help.

What can I do other then not go to the bathroom or run water in there?
When I do it starts scratching like mad for a little bit.

How likely could he plug that pipe up and cause methane gas or suer gas to
enter the rome and maybe cause a health problem?

Thanks.

Maybe I should keep running water or flushing until he scratches himself to
death, but can he do damage to the pipe or anything inside there?

Thanks.

Its been many years since I've seen this but they used a rectangular conduit
slightly larger than romex to run the wires on the surface of the walls from
either the baseboard or ceiling to the outlets and switches.

[BlindHandyMan] insulation in a crawlspace

2006-10-28 Thread Jeff Kisecker
Hi:

On another note, I am looking at insulating my crawlspace. I had a bid from
a guy that sprays foam in, but he wants about $1500.00 to insulate the sill
plate, in the crawlspace from the floor joists to the dirt, including over
the top of the existing Styrofoam along the walls.

He was also going to do the basement.from the floor joists to just below the
sill plate.

Is this high?

I am looking at putting fiberglass insulation between all floor joists, in
the crawlspace, but I need something else for the sill plate. Any ideas?

Thanks, Jeff

[BlindHandyMan] Plumbing Problem

2006-10-28 Thread Jeff Kisecker
Hi:

I went into my crawl space to check things out, my 11 year old son and I
found a small soaked puddle of water underneath my shower. The rubber seal
that goes up against the fiberglass of the shower was wet, and it appears
that there is a crack in the fiberglass. A couple of things, there aren't
any screws that will tighten up this connection into the shower, and my wife
could see light through the shower drain. Now, I am wondering if this is
something I can do without hiring a plumber to do, or am I going to have to
hire a plumber. One of the things I would like to do is to attempt to seal
the crack in the fiberglass, the other is to find a way to tighten the
connection between the vertical pipe and the bottom of the shower.

Please let me know if you need more of a description.

Thanks in advance for any advice. The pipes are all three or four inch
plastic.

Jeff

Re: [BlindHandyMan] removing air from heating system

What part of the system is not heating?

Are you sure there aren't any thermostatic control valves on the part of the
system that is not heating? If there are, they could be faulty or set to the
wrong temperature.

it seems to be about a 30 year old system it has 1 zone as i said which
  after the pump
takes a bunch of y's to several differant rooms in the home
i had this also confirmed by someone who is sited just incase i was missing
the valves in the road map of pipes
the system is a black iron pipe from the stoker to the heating units the
black pipe goes to the floor then there is a inch and a quarter fitting from
black pipe to 3 quarter copper for the base board and stays black pipe to
  all radiators
it seems to have had all radiator heat at some time because i had found the
holes in the hard wood flooring that would have served for radiators seems
like at some point the system may have frose and bursted the lower level
radiators then the system of base board was added
radiators are like gold in my area and very costly to replace
when i open all the bleeder valves on the second floor i get a steady stream
of hot watter had these open for quite a while with several people and many
5 gallon buckets catching the water in hope of getting some air out not sure
what else to try need some thoughts thanks mark

I don't really want to go to extreems. I am not looking to over size the
cilenders because of the extra cost of having them board out and the cost of
new pistons and rings.
A couple of things I am thinking about are going to a an Edel brock intake
and switching to a carborator. Probably a quadrojet because unlike the Holly
once it is set up it is pretty low maintanence.
other thing I am thinking is an over sized cam. What all else needs to be
changed when you put in an over sized cam, if any thing. .

what about headers? Will they give me any thing more than a lighter wallet?
What else have i overlooked?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] removing air from heating system

2006-10-28 Thread Mickey Fixsen
First of all, it sounds to me like you have a poorly designed system. Good to
hear that you are planning on redoing the system in the near future. A good
plumbing and heating person should be able to correctly solve your problems.

To answer this one specific question: Yes, you can get a thing called a saddle
valve at most any hardware store. It clamps on the pipe and most have a
self-piercing valve on them for copper pipe. They are used a lot to hook up an
ice maker and such. I normally would not recommend this for a permenant
solution to your problem, but it does answer your specific question.

Hope this helps.

  here is the problem
it is a single zone system and there is no perging valve as you described
there is only a spicket to drain the entire system
i have tried opening all the bleeder valves on the cast radiators and had
several people sitting there with buckets to catch all the water but no luck
i always thought the air would rise to the highest point but it seems like
  this thought is wrong
this is a home i had purchased a few months ago and have been fixing things
as i go now the heating season is here and can not figure out this air bound

can anyone tell me if there is such a thing as a self piercing bleeder valve
i can hook up to the copper baseboard to enable me to bleed the air
this is only going to be a temp. fix because i am changing the heating
system in the next few months and will be adding zones when the change is
  made

2006-10-28 Thread Art Rizzino
Robert,you wrote
"offul sounding stink boms you call an engine" Must times when a diesel is
running out of time they produce black smoke and stink as you put it.
The louder sound is caused by the injection of the diesel fuel. The
compression is higher in a diesel than a gas engine. The fuel is injected
with high pressures.
I for the most part like your choice of word "superior" HaHaHa.
You also said "by and large I believe have more torck" yes they do have more
toque.
In many diesel applications they run at lower RPMs than a gas engine.
Over the years I have worked on many gas and diesel engines. Growing up in
a family owned small business you work on whatever comes your way.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] removing air from heating system

2006-10-28 Thread mark
it seems to be about a 30 year old system it has 1 zone as i said which
after the pump
takes a bunch of y's to several differant rooms in the home
i had this also confirmed by someone who is sited just incase i was missing
the valves in the road map of pipes
the system is a black iron pipe from the stoker to the heating units the
black pipe goes to the floor then there is a inch and a quarter fitting from
black pipe to 3 quarter copper for the base board and stays black pipe to
all radiators
it seems to have had all radiator heat at some time because i had found the
holes in the hard wood flooring that would have served for radiators seems
like at some point the system may have frose and bursted the lower level
radiators then the system of base board was added
radiators are like gold in my area and very costly to replace
when i open all the bleeder valves on the second floor i get a steady stream
of hot watter had these open for quite a while with several people and many
5 gallon buckets catching the water in hope of getting some air out not sure
what else to try need some thoughts thanks mark

Do you have the circulating pump running? If so the air should eventually
end up at the highest point, hard to imagine how it could be avoided.

Does anything come out of the bleeders?

Could there be another valve maybe installed when the copper upgrade was
made which is either bypassing or otherwise isolating parts of the system?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] removing air from heating system

2006-10-28 Thread rj
Mark,

Once I ran into this problem and had to buy and install a self-tapping valve
on a line. The copper should be 3/4 inches and it is a job to try to find a
3/4 inch self tapping valve, but they are out there. Most stores carry the
1/2 inch self tapping valves. What I am describing is the valve for a ice
maker, or hot water dispenser. I don't know what or how they ran your
system, but if it isn't a continuous loop, you might be stuck putting a self
tapping valve on the return side of the heating element where ever it
drops. If you have some one or if you still can solder, you might be better
off, putting a shut off just above where the house supply comes into the
system and placing a faucet on the same return line just above that shut
off. But once again, is your boiler new, and do you have your expansion tank
hook up to a bleeder coming directly off your boiler?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question for Audiophiles.

2006-10-28 Thread spiro
If you are recording video you'll need a DVD recorder, and a card that
will have the video inputs.
For just audio, off of a VCR, I believe you are going to want to "Y" the
two audio (left and right) down to the stereo 1/8 inch jack that many mid
fi audio cards use as an in. Unless you don't care about shoving it all
into mono, but that's not what is implied by your subject line and is less
wonderful soundwise.
Beyond that, I'm sure someone can take you farther.

I've not used a table saw but once, and that was 20 years ago.
But isn't it safer and wiser to angle away from the blade?
meaning start with the 2 inch width and have it go to the 2.5 as you go;
than start at the 2.5 and push narrower on a short piece of board.
I don't know.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] removing air from heating system

2006-10-28 Thread mark
here is the problem
it is a single zone system and there is no perging valve as you described
there is only a spicket to drain the entire system
i have tried opening all the bleeder valves on the cast radiators and had
several people sitting there with buckets to catch all the water but no luck
i always thought the air would rise to the highest point but it seems like
this thought is wrong
this is a home i had purchased a few months ago and have been fixing things
as i go now the heating season is here and can not figure out this air bound
problem
can anyone tell me if there is such a thing as a self piercing bleeder valve
i can hook up to the copper baseboard to enable me to bleed the air
this is only going to be a temp. fix because i am changing the heating
system in the next few months and will be adding zones when the change is
made

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Dipsticks

2006-10-28 Thread Dale Leavens
The trouble with dipping something into the oil is that you will find it
very difficult to feel where the oil mark ends. If you get even a little oil
on your finger and you certainly will, that is that. A float
device might work, something that will float in the oil and protrude above
the port, maybe something like a straw corked at each end and marked at the
appropriate height might work. Probably a puff of air which bubbles when the
oil
level is adequate is the most dependable method I have heard of on this list
to this point. So far I have been able to have sighted help around when I
needed it but it is also true I don't keep on top of this as well as I
should.

I don't understand why a hanger or a piece of metal notched at intervals and
suspended through a cork is any different than a dipstick. Many dipsticks
have labels or marks scribed onto them already and if they do not, a file
will easily mark it for you. Already though we have identified that the
dipstick is inadequate for use by the blind and hence the discussion.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] door stopper

2006-10-28 Thread brice mijares
For a couple of bucks, I went to home depot and bought me a door stopper
that I screwed to the bottom of the door. This way I couldn't lose it. The
door leading out the side of the garage to the back has a metal security
door, so I leave the inter door open all the time. But before I put the
door stopper, every time we'd open the automatic garage door the side door
would slam shut, and scare the hell out of me. Where that side door is, is
where my Ham Shack is, and my bar. I spend allot of time in there, so the
door is open most of the time, even during winter
