[BlindHandyMan] Selecting the Correct saw Blade for Your Project

2007-01-07 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
The secret to proper cuts on the stock in your woodworking projects is to
use the right saw blade. Of course, the saw blade that you use should be
sharp
enough to cut cleanly through the stock without burning or tearing the wood.
Types of Saw Blades: The two primary types of circular saw blades are the
same as the two primary types of traditional hand saws: rip blades and
crosscut
blades.

A rip blade is designed to cut with the grain of the stock. It has a limited
number of very deep teeth, to help clear away the material that is cut. A
rip
blade will cut with the grain very quickly, but won't leave the cleanest of
finishes.

A crosscut blade cuts with
kerf
using chisels or carbides that alternate between cutting wide left and wide
right every other tooth. This can produce a very fine finish on most
materials
when crosscutting.
Combination blades are those that combine the benefits of both rip and
crosscut blades, and are quite common. Combination blades come in a variety
of tooth
counts, typically ranging from as low as 24-tooth to as high as 80-tooth.
The rule to remember is: the more teeth, the finer the finish. Blades with a
low tooth count will cut very aggressively but leave a relatively rough
finish, whereas a greater number of teeth will leave a cleaner finish.

Specialty blades, such as plywood blades, will have a much higher tooth
count and will leave a smooth finish with little tearout, but cut
comparatively
slowly.

Specialty Blades: There are specialty blades for cutting other materials,
such as diamond-tipped blades for cutting masonry, or hardened blades for
cutting
steel and aluminum.

Specific to woodworking, another common type of specialty blade is the dado
blade. The two types of dado blades are wobble blades, where the blade is
adjusted to a particular angle to create a
dado,
and stacked dado sets. Wobble dado blades can create a considerable amount
of vibration, which can be a bit unnerving when in use. Additionally, wobble
blades don't leave the cleanest dadoes for your joinery.
A preferred, but more expensive type of dado blade is the stacked dado set.
This set consists of a full crosscut blade on each side of the arbor, with
smaller
chippers in the middle. The chippers are typically either 1/8-inch or
1/16-inch in thickness. The width of the dado is dependent on the number of
chippers
on the arbor between the two blades. A typical stacked dado set will be able
to cut dadoes between 1/4 (using no chippers) to 13/16 (using the entire
compliment of chippers).

Dado blades should only be used on
table saws
or
radial arm saws.
They are not safe for use on a
circular saw.
Blade Sizes: Saw blades come in many different sizes, ranging anywhere from
5 to 12, but only certain sizes are available for use on each particular
type
of saw. Consult the documentation that comes with your saw(s) to determine
what sizes of blades can be used on your particular models. Never attempt to
use a blade that is not of the recommended size on any of your saws.

Circular saw blades are typically 7-1/4 in diameter, whereas table saws,
radial arm saws and
compound miter saws
will most often use 10 or 12 blades.
Care For Your Saw Blades: When you've used a saw blade for a period of time,
they can become dull or caked with pitch, and thus less effective. If a
considerable
amount of sap (pitch) has collected on the carbides, there are cleaning
solutions available at your fine woodworking supplier to remove the pitch.
You
can also try this
handy bit blade cleaning tip.
If you purchase quality carbide blades, they can be sharpened by a
professional saw sharpener, which will increase the life of the blade. Some
companies
that make high quality saw blades, such as
Forrester,
offer sharpening services through the manufacturer's website (for a fee, of
course). However, quality blades can be sharpened a number of times, which
will
help justify the increased initial cost. Better quality blades will cut
quicker and cleaner, and keep their edge longer.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Drilling Shelf Pin Holes

2007-01-07 Thread brice mijares
Pin holes are nothing more than little holes that are predrilled to carry a
pin that you insert into the hole. You insert these pins in the vertical
uprights of the structure carrying the shelves. Usually the pins are set in
the front and back of the outside verticals at the same height. Now if you
have a half inch pin, then you want to drill into the vertical only a
quarter of an inch, thus leaving a quarter of an inch to carry the shelve.
Another words once the pins are set into the verticals, you take the
shelves, and lay them level on the protruding pins.
A template is nothing more than a piece of material that is used to make
more than one more of the same at the same location. For instance, in the
case of these shelves, you could take a piece of wood or a peice of metal
and pre-drill holes into it. then set the templeate flush to the bottom of
the vertical and drill your holes. You do repete this to both front and
back of your verticals, and if done precisely, the shelves will set true.
Hope this was understanable.

Hi John,
Yes, the regular router table the router is mounted under the table with the
bit being perpendicular the table top. The horizontal table the router is
mounted at the back so the bit is parallel to the table top.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] measuring

2007-01-07 Thread Lenny McHugh
John,
Interesting, the unit I have has 12 and 24 inch extension rods. It was
invented at Overbrook in the very late 1940s. A friend of mine who went to
that school in early 1950 made them.
I did not know that there was a similar product on the market. I wanted to
have mine duplicated so that I could send the original to the school for
their museum, but it would be very expensive. I did make some photographs
for them.
Do you know how much the rotomatic costs and is it 3/8 all thread? If it is
not too expensive and does the same thing I would consider getting one and
donating the original to the school.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Drilling Shelf Pin Holes

2007-01-07 Thread Dan Rossi
When I built the big shelf unit in my closet last year, I wanted to
floating shelves in there. I cheated a bit for the pin holes. I had a
piece of peg board laying around. I snapped a length off of it and vwa
la, a template with holes every inch. I just laid it on the verticals
lining up two edges of the peg board with two edges of the shelf unit,
marked the holes, and drilled them out. It worked quite well.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Drilling Shelf Pin Holes

2007-01-07 Thread mardal dugal
thank you for your help . brice mijares

brice mijares [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Pin holes are nothing more
than little holes that are predrilled to carry a
pin that you insert into the hole.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] horizontal table

2007-01-07 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hi John,
Flatbed Horizontal Benchtop Table

Rout wide stock FLAT ON THE TABLE with tall bits in the horizontal position.

Don't stand stock precariously on edge!
I plan to make a lot of raised panel doors and picture frames. I think that
this table would do a better job.
I am considering adding it to my collection.

[BlindHandyMan] palm air nailer

2007-01-07 Thread John Schwery

for you who have air compressors, you might like the idea of an air
nailer that one holds in the palm of the hand. Harbor Freight is
selling one for $39. It handles most sizes of nailers, delivers
about 1000 blows per minute and can be run with 100 pounds of pressure.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] measuring

2007-01-07 Thread Lenny McHugh
John,
Thanks, there are a few slight differences. Mine the main part is 12.5 with
a 1 and 2 foot aluminum extension rod.
It is a shame that the school does not have any of the items that that
instructor invented. He had many patents on these items. My friend also has
a pocket stylist that was invented in the 1940s. It has a turned metal knob
drilled and tapped at the small end. The point of the stylist is affixed to
a threaded metal shaft that screws into the knob. When not in use you put
the point into the knob and reverse for use.
These were also produced at Over Brook.
At one time the school had a fantastic wood amd metal shop.
When my brother attended in mid 1970s he made a real neat lamp.
He took a lot of blocks of different woods and drilled a center hole in them
then aligning the holes he glued the blocks together.
When cured he mounted this long block on a lathe and turned the most unique
lamp.

Lenny, I think they cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $60 or
$70. The main part, a 6.5-inch rod is a 3/8-inch rod, threaded 16
threads to the inch.

John,
Interesting, the unit I have has 12 and 24 inch extension rods. It was
invented at Overbrook in the very late 1940s.

Sounds close to a rotomatic. The rotomatic come with 3 extensions,
6, 12, and 18-inch. Also, one can order the extensions separately.

 Hi All,
I use two tools for measuring. A talking tape measure and a device
that was made about 60 years ago at the Over Brook School for the
 Blind in Philadelphia.
This device is a piece of all thread rod with 16 turns per inch. One
side is planed off every 1/2 and the opposite side is totally
planed. There is a part about 1x2 drilled and tapped. and a
locking nut. there are two extension rods a 1 and a a 2 foot.
By counting the turns and feeling from each 1/2 spot I can make a
very accurate measurement. Each full turn is 1/16 a half and
quarter turn are a 32nd and 64th respectively.
My talking tape measure is 1/16 accuracy witha metric option.
It is designed for taking both inside and outside measurements.
I purchased the talking tape measure from:

[BlindHandyMan] ordering cabinets from Menards

2007-01-07 Thread Jim Ruby
Hi,

I have ordered 3 cabnets from menards and a counter top plus everything to
put it all together. It is my understanding all I am going to need to do
is:

1. screw the cabnets together
2. place slats on the top of the cabnets and screw the counter top on to the
slats.

I am told I have to screw the cabnets to the wall, but I do not want to do
this in case I wish to move it at a later date. So my questions:

1. is this something easily done or is there things I have not thought of.
Btw: these are cabnets that will sit on the floor. I see most of my cabnets
in the kitchen are sitting on the wood floor they did not put tile down. Is
it ok to place these cabnets on my tile or will it reck it over time?

2. I have two plugins that will be blocked behind the cabnets I am not sure
how I want to get access to them.

1. cut holes in the counter and back of the cabnet. I'd hate to spill
something then it would be a mess inside the cabnet as well.

2. just running flat heavyduty extention coard the small ones out the sides
of the cabnet or out to the top as behind the cabnet is a half wall and have
them go in to a serge protecter so appliences can be plugged in.

Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

2007-01-07 Thread John Schwery
When I was in machine shop training, we made some variations on the
rotomatic. We made a short, 3 inch model with no extensions. We
made a 3 inch l shaped model with a hole drilled where the 2 pieces
of the l met. We made a 12 inch cross with a hole drilled in the
middle. I still have all of them.

earlier, Lenny McHugh, wrote:

John,
Thanks, there are a few slight differences.
When cured he mounted this long block on a lathe and turned the most unique
lamp.

softer like pine would probably have much deeper dings than oak. Although
the oak would still get banged up.

  Hi Carl,
A few days back on one of the home and garden, shows they were making a
table
and wanted to make it look very old.
They took some fairly heavy chains and repeatedly struck the table top
creating an old patina. Then they finished the top.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] ordering cabinets from Menards

2007-01-07 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi Jim

I suggest you first move the electrical outlets up the wall so you have
access to them.
As they are generally on a stud tracing it up higher should be easy.
Generally instructions come with these types of cupboards but I would be
screwing them to the wall if you want to move them later just unscrew them.
Out here everything is screwed up using an Allan Key, what I like to do is
cut the bend off and put the straight end in a driver drill it is a lot
quicker.
But start the screws first so you do not cross thread them.
Make sure each cupboard is level with the next so the counter top fits
correctly.
This might mean using wedges to bring each one level with each other.
Generally kitchen cupboards fit directly onto the floor and not over tiles
could you remove the tiles where the cupboards are going to go then you
could also screw the kicks flat to the floor.
What type of splash back are you going to have.
Sounds like you are going to have fun.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] ordering cabinets from Menards

 Hi,

I have ordered 3 cabnets from menards and a counter top plus everything to
put it all together. It is my understanding all I am going to need to do
 is:

 1. screw the cabnets together
 2. place slats on the top of the cabnets and screw the counter top on to
 the
 slats.

I am told I have to screw the cabnets to the wall, but I do not want to do
this in case I wish to move it at a later date. So my questions:

 1. is this something easily done or is there things I have not thought of.
Btw: these are cabnets that will sit on the floor. I see most of my
 cabnets
in the kitchen are sitting on the wood floor they did not put tile down.
 Is
it ok to place these cabnets on my tile or will it reck it over time?

 2. I have two plugins that will be blocked behind the cabnets I am not
 sure
how I want to get access to them.

 1. cut holes in the counter and back of the cabnet. I'd hate to spill
something then it would be a mess inside the cabnet as well.

 2. just running flat heavyduty extention coard the small ones out the
 sides
of the cabnet or out to the top as behind the cabnet is a half wall and
 have
them go in to a serge protecter so appliences can be plugged in.

 Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

I want to open the trap under the bathroom sink
It looks to have a plug of some sort at the very bottom. It is about the

for you who have air compressors, you might like the idea of an air
nailer that one holds in the palm of the hand. Harbor Freight is
selling one for $39. It handles most sizes of nailers, delivers
about 1000 blows per minute and can be run with 100 pounds of pressure.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] ordering cabinets from Menards

2007-01-07 Thread R S Enterprises
If you have any thought and want to take these cabinets you number one don't
want to remove any tile. Also most cabinets screwed to the wall are considered
part of the house structure and are intended to pe left when moving. So no
don't fasten them to the wall. They asked about back splash. If you have the
molded style that is curved and part of the top you have nothing to worry
about. If it is the style with square corners that is intended to be glued to
the wall you will need to fasten it the top with screws through the top and
into the backsplash. I would then cut a hole in the back where the outlets
are. plug an extension cord in and bring it up to the top whereever you want
it. I would attach two or three strips to the back the thickness of the cord
so the cabinets will not smash it. So when you move unplug the cords move the
cibmets and clean the line along the tile floor and everything is back to
normal. Do not plug in an extension cord without cutting a hole. It would un
accessable which is a definite code violation.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] ordering cabinets from Menards

  Hi,

I have ordered 3 cabnets from menards and a counter top plus everything to
put it all together. It is my understanding all I am going to need to do
  is:

  1. screw the cabnets together
  2. place slats on the top of the cabnets and screw the counter top on to the

Re: [BlindHandyMan] router for router table

2007-01-07 Thread Dale Leavens
Last march I purchased a Triton 3.25 HP model of router which I eventually
intend to use in a router table. It is a heavy and big beast, a plunge
router. You probably don't require the plunge facility too much in a table,
I am thinking I will fit a router jack though one day so I can raise the
router into the work when needed rather than dropping the work over a moving
bit and will be glad enough to have the plunge capability then.

Makita makes a router with similar specifications but I haven't seen it. I
am generally happy with this Triton, in some ways I will be sorry to consign
it to a table, it has an excellent fence and circle cutting jig arrangement
which is very easy to instal and remove which I really like, only one of the
type I have ever seen.

It was on sale at Busybee Tools for $325 last March , seems to be selling
for around $500 now but I do see the Makita come on sale for a little over
$300 from time-to-time.

Hope this helps.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Drilling Shelf Pin Holes

2007-01-07 Thread Dale Leavens
Pegboard can work and I have often used it but it isn't too durable. What I
liked about my notched stick is that I was able to just slide the work
sideways feeling along the stick with the spinning bit, when it slipped into
a notch I just settled it into place then cranked the bit through the work.
Very quick and essentially no wear on the jig so far. No need to fiddle to
get the bit into the center of the hole in the pegboard and all that.

la, a template with holes every inch. I just laid it on the verticals
lining up two edges of the peg board with two edges of the shelf unit,
marked the holes, and drilled them out. It worked quite well.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] horizontal table

2007-01-07 Thread Dale Leavens
There are limited applications for a horizontal table, I have been cutting
sliding dovetails today, not required for the router table drawers I am
making but I like them just the same. To cut the long pins I set a fence
exposing only a little bit of the dovetail cutter then holding the side of
the drawer against the fence and the end of that board down onto the table
and with a push pad to hold the board against the fence pushed the board
past the cutter. The drawer wall is only 18 inches high so not too difficult
to control however a horizontal table would have the bit turning in the
horizontal axis and the edge of it protruding just above the table. I would
have pushed the end of the drawer side against a fence then pressed the
board down onto the table and holding it there pushed it past the bit like
you might with a miter gauge.

There aren't a lot of situations where you push wood through a router on
it's end or edge, Raised panels and sliding dovetails come to mind but most
router operations are done on the vertical access.

I hadn't thought of it before this thread came up but I am thinking that I
could probably build an accessory to create one for that purpose on the
table I am building. Some ready rod fitted with a crank to raise and lower a
carriage and some of that extruded channel as a guide should about do it.

[BlindHandyMan] not allowed on TV

2007-01-07 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hi All,
I am convinced that there some people that should not be allowed on TV. This
afternoon I was channel surfing and temporarily stopped on the Home and Garden
channel.
There was a couple showing how to install molding. This is when I quickly
changed the channel.
The woman was showing how to use a scratch awl to countersink the nails.
A $2.00 nail set would be much safer and eliminate the possibility of some
damage to the molding. I have a mental picture of placing the point of the awl
and hitting it with a hammer and having it slip splitting the molding.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Sink trap

Hi Robert,

There is probably a specific tool for the job but all I have ever used is a
vice grip or even a bar held between those little pegs to remove the plug.
Keep a bucket under the trap you will likely get about a cup of disgusting
effluent come out of there.

There should be a little rubber washer, try not to lose it, it makes a
difference.

Hope this helps.

It looks to have a plug of some sort at the very bottom. It is about the
size of a quarter and it has a small tab on each side. I was wondering if
that comes off and if so how do you remove it.I don't want to break those

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Sink trap

2007-01-07 Thread rj
I found it is a lot safer to just remove the trap. It is a lot easier to
replace the 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 compression rings.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Sink trap

2007-01-07 Thread Paul Franklin
Robert, you can remove the plug in the sink trap by turning it counter
clockwise with channel locks or an adjustable wrench. Have a can or a cup
ready when you take out the plug to catch the water in the trap.

I want to open the trap under the bathroom sink
It looks to have a plug of some sort at the very bottom. It is about the
size of a quarter and it has a small tab on each side. I was wondering if
that comes off and if so how do you remove it.I don't want to break those
 tabs.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Sink trap

2007-01-07 Thread Dale Leavens
Well in that case I have never seen such. The only ones I am familiar with
have either two sort of ears which stick down from the bottom of the
threaded plug like device or lugs which face into the center of a sort of
hole molded up into the center of the plug.

Sorry!

You can still probably grab the outer diameter of the thing assuming it is
in other ways the same as I am used to with a pair of vise-grip or other
channel lock pliers.

There are, as someone else mentioned here the sort which can be unthreaded
with a nut from the end of the elbow that faces down toward the trap at it's
exit. The entry also has a thread which slides onto the tail from the sink.
In this way you can remove the entire trap for cleaning or replacement or
just to remove the plug from the convenience of a work bench I suppose.

[BlindHandyMan] question on installing a temp sencer

2007-01-07 Thread Robert j. moore
I have a temp sencer that I need to install on a Chevy 4.3 It has brass
threads and threads into the head. I was told by a mechanic to use some of
that teflon tape of which I have a roll. How much should I put around the
threads? Do I wrap it once or should I cover all the threads with one coat?
or some other method.
I would welcome any other suggestions. Robert

confirmation. I am sure we don't have aluminum wire, if we did
I'd be in there right now to be sure nothing has gone high
resistance.

I always hate to turn off all the power if i don't have too, so
much junk needs resetting GRIN

Maybe I'll wait till the power fails due to a storm and then turn
off the breakers and see what i can find.

Thanks
tom

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Electric house wiring question:

2007-01-07 Thread Tom Fowle
thanks Ron, I was picturing an extra junction box up in the crawl
space but of course the light ceiling box is right there in the
hall so that's likely the point where everything might be
accessible.

I did check all the breakers of course and all the fuses. I
don't think it's likely on the neighbor's circuit as not at all
close to the common wall which is thankfully between the garages.

looking for a good set of rubber gloves first of course.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] router for router table

2007-01-07 Thread Mickey Fixsen
It is advantageous to use a plunge router for this application. Removing the
counter balance springs is a real advantage for a router that is dedicated for
use in a router table. This makes height adjustment a breeze. Make sure it
will use both 1/4n and 1/2 shank router bits. Find one that is very powerful
and variable speed. It is a lot easier to use one that uses one wrench and a
spindle lock rather than one that uses 2 wrenches to change bits.

Go and put them in your hands to look at them before putting down the money.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] question on installing a temp sencer

2007-01-07 Thread Mickey Fixsen
Use 1/2 wide teflon tape. Wrap it around the threads holding the tape edge
flush with the beginning bottom threads of the fitting. Rotate the fitting
in the direction that you would to install it and keep tension on the tape
so that it is quite tight on the threads as you rotate. Make about 4 full
revolutions around the threads.

Teflon tape is for a fitting with at least 2 wires going to it. If there is
only 1 wire, it needs to make a ground connection through the threads and
the tape could prohibit this. If it uses only 1 wire, use a very small
amount of thread sealing compound and tightly install the fitting.

I have a temp sencer that I need to install on a Chevy 4.3 It has brass
threads and threads into the head. I was told by a mechanic to use some
 of
that teflon tape of which I have a roll. How much should I put around the
threads? Do I wrap it once or should I cover all the threads with one
 coat?
 or some other method.
I would welcome any other suggestions. Robert

There are, as someone else mentioned here the sort which can be unthreaded
with a nut from the end of the elbow that faces down toward the trap at
 it's
exit. The entry also has a thread which slides onto the tail from the
 sink.
In this way you can remove the entire trap for cleaning or replacement or
just to remove the plug from the convenience of a work bench I suppose.

 each side. Dale
The tabe are facing out not up and down. Also the tabs appear to slide up
into slots but I am not sure.

 Hi Robert,

There is probably a specific tool for the job but all I have ever used is
 a
vice grip or even a bar held between those little pegs to remove the
 plug.
Keep a bucket under the trap you will likely get about a cup of
 disgusting
 effluent come out of there.

There should be a little rubber washer, try not to lose it, it makes a
 difference.

 Hope this helps.

I want to open the trap under the bathroom sink
It looks to have a plug of some sort at the very bottom. It is about the
size of a quarter and it has a small tab on each side. I was wondering
 if
that comes off and if so how do you remove it.I don't want to break
 those
 tabs.
