what they use in the state parks in PA looks like 6x6 with a full 4X8ft
compressed paper. (Masonite) board over it.
I don't know how offen it's replaced, but I've never seen one fall down or
hanging, or ready to do so.

thank you! I forgot to mention the dirt burm behind the board.
Philadelphia shot up a Philadelphia Gas works truck because they were
firing before the new burm was put in place, uh duh. :)
It's generally quite high and deep. it's about 500 yards back on rifle
range, and is about 100ft high but quite deep as well.
It's nearer on shotgun and pistol ranges..

 Michael,

You are looking at two different types of targets.

The bow and arrow can be effectively stopped with a bale of
hay, while on the otherhand combat whipped cream or high
impact souper-sonic grween beans will need something that
will dicipate the energy more quickly. Many small arms
ranges use heavy sheets of rubber to absorb the impact of
that whipped cream or green beans. In either case what you
want to prevent at any cost is ricochet.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Targets

2007-06-09 Thread spiro
Michael, This topic has been dredged by some of us, (not to say not
discussed on list) and there ar few things.
If you soot that radio or buzzer, it will be destroyed.
So you might send it's sound up a horn through the back.

The best solution is to get one of those light to sensor games.
Now, it gets tricky here.
You have to put the light on your chosen firearm.
You then place the sensor 10-15 feet away off to the side.
You then angle the light emmitter to point to the side, so that when the
rifle is sighted (by the sighted) to the bullseye of the target, the light
emmitter is at the proper angle to the sensor and will beep. You need a
circuit that will beep when you are on, and stop when you are off target.
Not a circuit like in some of the cheaper games we are trying to use, that
uses just the briefest of light sensings to count as a hit, thus the sound
stops or is intermittant.
You'll always need to be within X feet of the sensor, and any angle
changes will need to be corrected, so you may wish to add a red dot to the
sensor so your sighted friends can see where the sensor is pointing for
easy set up.
ow, you may wish to keep the tone box, if not in the sensor near you so
not to bother other shooters, (put a sweater over it). You probably won't
be able to wire headphones as the sensing anle would be rather odd and
you'll need to triangulate with as much distance as possible.
Remember a little movement hee is a big movement down range, so it is best
if a little movement here is a medium movement to the sensor to at least
be competative.
It's a drag to try to work one of these things and many things have been
tried.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Targets

2007-06-09 Thread spiro

Hi, Part 2

What I always did was put about 60 feet of twine onto a coffee can, I'd
fill it with rocks, and set it out in my lane, as far from the shooting
line as possible.
I would then
tug, tug, tug,
and small tugs made for 2 foot hops of the can, like the standard foot
step.
Granted a coffee can is a small target.
But as it stepped closer and closer, I had a better and bettr chance.
that's why I know, for me,
.38, 9MM, and higher cause ringing that conflicts.
this is unless the 9MM is downa rather long barrellike the Artillery
Luger.
Still that noise is tiresome.
.32, and especially .22 are fine, and ammo is cheap.
but, I will warn you, don't let the other guys hear the noise you'll make
if you hit the twine with that bullet. Yes, accidentally I assure you. But
that's a lot of power hitting that string and you'll feel the full test of
that string in an instant, in your hand.
But plowing that coffee can is very very satisfying.
We took at-shirt form and stuck jinglebells to it.
So my buddy would hit his target, on the same board, and I'd hear the
bells ring
and try to shoot at them.
25 yards on the pistol range, still too far away for locating by sound.
that was 10ft for me, and I put a golf ball sized group of 3 .45 into the
center of the t-shirt form. :)
We also did a little bit of voodoo that day by naming the target. Nice
work if you can get it.

[BlindHandyMan] flooring question

2007-06-09 Thread Jennifer Jackson
Hey Guys,

I have been preauthorized for a home loan and have started the hunt. So if all
goes well, I will be buying a house shortly. I am sure hoping you guys will
have some help for me on a flooring question.

I really like hard wood floors. Not just the look, but the sound and feel of
walking on them. I think these are considered raised floors. How do I know
what is under the carpet? I am looking at houses that were generally built in
the 60's and 70's.

I had always known I liked those kind of floors, but had not really thought
about why until visiting the home of someone with a blind child who had built
her house with those kind of floors because she had been told they will be
helpful to him.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] flooring question

2007-06-09 Thread Jennifer Jackson
I didn't really make it clear in that last post, but I am hoping for some
comments on what kind of, if any, flooring works for someone who is blind?
Both in terms of mobility and maintenance. I know my preference is for hard
surfaces with occasional throw rugs as landmarks. Though I do not know if this
has anything to do with my blindness, as this is the kind of look that appealed
to me as a sighted person too. Though then the area carpet was more for
aesthetics.

Tom,
A semi-agreement here. I have lived in several deserts for a number of
yeatrs. The collector would work in the upper desert during the winter. At
least as to the desert just east of the Sierras. I remember waking up many
winter mornings, having to scrape the ice off my windshield. Also, it may
work in larger communities such as Tucson, where the humidity has gone up
due to all the landscaping from all the homes. Finally, where I live now,
at the southern California beach, we get the sea air but not the
precipitation. Technically, we are a semi-arid desert. We the population
booming here, it is a matter of time before there will be water rationing.
The Bay Area has already shut down shipping water from the delta down south
for the last week and it is already having an effect on some rural
communities. Thus, my question from a couple of months back about sending
gray water from my washer to my garden.

[BlindHandyMan] my position on the floor

2007-06-09 Thread tunecollector
You need not have a raised floor to have wood flooring. My house sits on a
concrete pad with various rooms having ceramic tile, vinyl flooring, wood,
and wall-to-wall carpeting. It is easier to navigate on the vinyl and wood
floors with the use of strategically placed runners and small area rugs. To
these, we have applied double-back adhesive tape which keeps the rugs from
visiting their neighbors. The room with the most ceramic tile flooring is
in the kitchen where we have placed thick rubberized mats at four locations.
The wall-to-wall carpeting is the biggest challenge. Here the rugs and
runners tend to migrate and using tape doesn't work. Stitching the rugs
into the place onto the carpet creates a situation where dirt collects under
the rugs and it is a pain to clean. I have resorted to placing very thick
runners and mats on top of the carpet. These too will eventually migrate
but with less frequency and less distance. In terms of pure navigation,
wall-to-wall carpeting is not the way to go.

But then, just my experience. There are more inventive minds than mine on
this list and I would value their suggestions.

Jim

2007-06-09 Thread RJ
I just had a house built about five years ago and put in ceramic tile in the
bathroom, hall kitchen, dining room and burbur carpet in the living and
bedrooms . I like the ceramic because it is easy to clean and the carpet pile
is short and does not stain. The only draw back is if you drop something made
of glass on the ceramic, it is most likely be in pieces.

I didn't really make it clear in that last post, but I am hoping for some
comments on what kind of, if any, flooring works for someone who is blind? Both
in terms of mobility and maintenance. I know my preference is for hard surfaces
with occasional throw rugs as landmarks. Though I do not know if this has
anything to do with my blindness, as this is the kind of look that appealed to
me as a sighted person too. Though then the area carpet was more for aesthetics.

One thought here when ever you see carpet covering hard wood flooring, is
what are they trying too cover here, what are they trying to hide. Maybe
nothing. Maybe they were just tired of hard wood floors, are maybe there is
more to it. Just hard to say, but worth thinking about. Don

I just had a house built about five years ago and put in ceramic tile in the
bathroom, hall kitchen, dining room and burbur carpet in the living and
bedrooms . I like the ceramic because it is easy to clean and the carpet
pile is short and does not stain. The only draw back is if you drop
something made of glass on the ceramic, it is most likely be in pieces.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] lubricant

2007-06-09 Thread robert moore
Lenny
Thank you for your post
I have used that in the past and have been racking my brains trying to
remember the name of that stuff. I'm not sure that try flow is as aggressive
for loosening rusty old bolts but on the other hand as it is a Teflon based
product I think it is less proned to collecting dust than other products
like wd 40 or PB blaster.
So it may be a better choice in some situations for lubricating but as a
penatrent I still like PB Blaster.
I think a lot of people don't stop to think about the difference between a
penitrant and a lubricant.

Well, I think it depends on what you want to lubricate. My favorite is
Triflow. I use it on my grandson's bicycle chain because it is Teflon based
and doesn't attract any dirt. For my tool surfaces I use a product called
slippit. For the oven door I used white lithium grease. I also use silicon
spray for door locks. I really don't think that there is truly an one stop
product.

  Ken
  That is a huge question.
That could not possibly be fully explained in this type of forum but let me
see if I can cover some of the most basic ideas.
Now days most if not all cars have an electronic fuel pump in the gas tank.
When you turn on the key the fuel pump runs to pressurize the fuel system.
Now when the engine is turned over if every thing is working properly the
crank shaft is turned which moves the pistons up and down to keep this
simple let us only look at one piston and what happens in each cycle.
Car engines are called 4 cycle engines and this is why.
Cycle one. Air and fuel are mixed in what is called the intake manifold.
There is an intake valve that opens to let fuel in at just the Wright time.
And when the piston is going down it is taking in the fuel air mixture.
  Hence intake.
Cycle 2 the piston moves back up and the fuel air mixture becomes
compressed. This is the compression cycle.
Cycle 3 about this time a charge is sent to the spark plug and it ignites
the fuel air mixture and forces the piston downward. This is the combustion
cycle; this cycle is where the power is produced.
And finally the fourth and last cycle is the exhaust cycle.
After the fuel is burned it has to go somewhere so as the piston is going
back up the exhaust valve opens and the piston pushes out the burned fuel
and the exhaust valve then closes. And it starts all over again
In cycle 2 and 3 the valves are closed
There is a lot that goes on to make this all happen but, in a nutshell, that
  is it.
These four things happen in the same order whether you are talking about a
Portia 911 or that little 3.5 Briggs and Stratton engine on the lawn mower.
Hope that all made some sence.
Now for all you gear heads out there. I left out a huge amount of stuff I
know, but I wanted to just paint the big picture.
