List guidelines.

The topics that can be discussed on the Blind Handy Man list are as follows.

Here is a direct quote from the beginning of every show, building repairing or
maintaining, all designed with the blind in mind. That can be your house,
car, or swimming pool ETC. No matter if it were how to do a job or what would
be the correct tool to use for the task in question. We have people on here of
all skill levels, from the beginner to those who build additions on their
houses. So never hesitate to ask what ever you might need to know because most
likely somebody on the list will be able to help you out. The only question
that can’t be answered is the one that is never asked.

This isn't really a gardening list although questions about lawn maintenance
such as mowing and that sort of thing are perfectly fine. Nor is it a
technical list relating to software questions, but repairing your computer's
hardware is certainly right on topic. If you have any doubt whether a given
post is on topic or not contact the moderator for approval. This is especially
recommended if it's a post that contains advertising unless another member has
previously requested the information. Also keep subject lines relevant to the
contents of your post. Lastly if you know a given subject is off topic, then
don't post it to the list.

This list is a great place to gather ideas and exchange information on anything
to do with being handy. So relax and enjoy.

[BlindHandyMan] homelite weed wacker: UT 20638

2009-08-01 Thread David Engebretson Jr.
I've got this weed wacker with no battery charger, it's the HomeLite
UT20638.

Anybody have ideas what type of voltage/amperage it needs and where the plug
in is? A description of the plug type would be awesome. I've had my
fingers all over it and can't find it.

Thanks,
David

[BlindHandyMan] Patio project update.

2009-08-01 Thread Dale Leavens
On Tuesday a truck should be arriving with several hundred retaining wall
blocks of two types and a load of retaining edging and spikes for the patio. I
have about three quarters of it laid but have to take a small diversion to
break up a small set of stairs I had poured 18 years ago when I first scaped
the yard. The steps have subsided quite a bit in one corner and in doing so
pulled away from the cement block forming some of the wall of the well. These
are three steps which descent to a landing before a turn to descend the rest of
the way to a basement door entry. It is a shame to have to destroy the steps
really, I did a rather good job, they are formed inside a sort of box. Clever
though the design was, it is a lot of cement to bust up. I rented a big bosch
electric jack hammer for the week-end, hopefully it won't kill me, so far I
have removed the bottom step and about a third of the second step which is
solid to the bottom. I think I'll quit for tonight.

I believe I'll line the well again but this time with retaining wall stones to
include risers for the steps. I will fill behind with sharp sand and compact it
firmly then cap with caps stones and probably stick them down with some heavy
construction adhesive. That way, if they fail again all I need do is dig 'em up
and lay them again.

That hammer gets mighty heavy for a little chap after four or five hours I can
tell you.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Electric water heater

2009-08-01 Thread Michael baldwin
Thanks for the tips and help with the electric water heater.
I am glad it was mentioned that the wires are live in there. I would have
assumed they would keep the live wires away from any type of adjustments
that need to be made. I turned off the breaker. I didn't locate any way to
adjust the temp though. Found a reset button, but that is it.

I might have to get some eyes to take a look at it for me.

Thanks,
Michael

Hi Dale

Does your wife help you for this is a major project with it seems more hard
work ahead.

Keep us informed as you go for I am interested in what you have under taken
here.

If I am doing anything out in the yard my wife works alongside me telling me
what I am doing wrong.

If I am pushing a Wheel Barrow she tells me in what direction it should be
going so I do not knock over her plants, or run over the dog.

It is amazing what we as blind people can achieve when we set our minds on a
project.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Patio project update.

2009-08-01 Thread Betsy Whitney
Aloha Ray,
I was just curious if you had considered moving bakward while using
the wheelbarrel? When I have to move things like that, I move
backward and then I can check behind myself with my feet to avoid
plants and such. I generally plan some things with which I do not
want or need husband/Mr. Marvelous to participate, when he is away or
napping. We have very different ideas about how things should be
accomplished, and if I do it myself, I don't have to go back and
clean up his back trail.
Just a thought,
Betsy
