RE: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys

2010-01-12 Thread Joe Plummer
If he has a bumper to bumper warranty. It will be covered for example a
bumper to bumper warranty for 5 years or 100,00 miles or witch ever comes
first. But it has to be a bumper to bumper warranty.

An alternator is part of the electrical system, not the power train. You can
always check but I've never heard of one being covered for the same time as
the engine.

Earlier this evening my wife was driving home. For a few seconds the gauges
on the car went nuts. The speed odometer went up to 80 and then back to 50,
the gas gauge dropped and the light went on. The temp went way up and then
back to normal. It is on a 2003 grand caravan. When all of the gauges went
nuts itonly lasted a few seconds. Wondering if this is because something in
ghe computer or electrical is starting to fail or if some rf got into the
system.

Earlier this evening my wife was driving home. For a few seconds the gauges
on the car went nuts. The speed odometer went up to 80 and then back to 50,
the gas gauge dropped and the light went on. The temp went way up and then
back to normal. It is on a 2003 grand caravan. When all of the gauges went
nuts itonly lasted a few seconds. Wondering if this is because something in
ghe computer or electrical is starting to fail or if some rf got into the
system.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] question for the car guys

2010-01-11 Thread Tom Hodges
By the way the garage that diagnosed the problem wanted $400 for them to
furnish and install the alternator themselves. I paid them $25 to diagnose
the problem and saved a total of $175 by purchasing it from Auto Zone and
installing it myself.

This is an excellent point. My experience with auto, or

occurs, more often than not the repair shop can't find out

ghe computer or electrical is starting to fail or if some rf got into the
system.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] question about wood filler

2010-01-07 Thread Tom Fowle
I doubt a filler will hold screws,
If you have the space, how about drilling out the screw holes to maybe 3/8ths
inch and gluing dowels in them to take the new screw holes then filling in the
rest with plastic wood before sand and finishing. Drill for the dowels as deep
as you dare to give yiu plenty of gripping surface.

Even if you replaced the wood with a new chunk and could ,match the color,
you'd want to put in some pins between tghe new and old wood to gain strength

Tom

Yes you can drill and put screws in plastic wood. But in case of the chair
no it will not stand that kind of pressure.

I think I may have asked the wrong question. This
article seems to be talking about wood filler to seal the wood pores.

I need to fill in a place whare the wood is
broken away and dril a new scrue whole then color that new filled place.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] question about wood filler

2010-01-05 Thread Max Robinson
In my admittedly limited experience you can't drill and put screws into
filler. I once repaired the leg of a swivel chair. I mean the part where
the caster shaft goes in. The wood had broken away around the hole. The
previous owner had tried to glue the original pieces back and that lasted
about 5 seconds. I bought it off him for 5 dollars.I completely cut
away the damaged wood making straight smooth cuts. Then I got a block of
the same kind of wood and glued it in place. Then I planed and sanded it
down to be smooth and drilled a new hole for the caster shaft. I sold it
several years ago for 25 dollars and as far as I know it is still holding
together. I didn't take the final step of finishing the added piece to
match but it could be done and with care it should be invisible. Your
situation is very different than mine because your break is in a highly
visible area and on something that must be made to look as good as new.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] question about wood filler

2010-01-05 Thread Kevin Doucet
I think I may have asked the wrong question. This
article seems to be talking about wood filler to seal the wood pores.

I need to fill in a place whare the wood is
broken away and dril a new scrue whole then color that new filled place.

Hi list,

I have a part of a piano which has a place on the edge of the fall
board, "part of the piano which closes and covers the keys" that has
broken away. This is at a screw whole.

I will need to build this place up with some sort of wood filler or
plastic wood or something then re drill a screw whole. Now this
filled in place will be visible when the "fall board" is raised.

So my question, or two questions are;

1. what do I need to fill in this place to be strong enough to drill
a pilot whole and put a screw in?

2. Will touch up pencels work to cover the newly replaced surface,
allowing I can get the right color of touch up pencel or pencels? I
know touch up penceles work on real wood but what about on wood fillers?
I am about to run out. I have a ride coming, so, if you can respond
quickly I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Hi list,

I will need to build this place up with some sort of wood filler or

So my question, or two questions are;

1. what do I need to fill in this place to be strong enough to drill
a pilot whole and put a screw in?

2. Will touch up pencels work to cover the newly replaced surface,
allowing I can get the right color of touch up pencel or pencels? I
know touch up penceles work on real wood but what about on wood fillers?
I am about to run out. I have a ride coming, so, if you can respond

Victor,

I would need a Universal type. I am not sure of the make nor model.

The unit came with the townhouse, built about 12 years ago.

Thanks.

  Hi Cathy,

I bought it as a full kit from Dodds Garage Doors here in Toronto.

I'm not sure if they'll do U.S. orders or not, but I've got a connection
there, and so will find out for you.

Can you send me the make and model garage door opener you have?

If not, I'll see if they've got a universal one you can use or buy.

It is by U-connect, or something like that. i don't know if they do
portable ones, or if they just do in car ones for Chrysler.
But I think we have to have a working portable one to program it, so it
might not be exactly what your looking for.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] question about remote garage door openers

2009-07-08 Thread Alan & Terrie Robbins
Lee,

What I have found in the past is you need to buy an opener that can be
programmed to the type (brand) door you have. For instance, a couple of
years ago we installed a Liftmaster garage door opener. Prior to that we
had Craftsman. There was no way I could get the remotes that went with
Craftsman to properly program with the Liftmaster. We had to get additional
remotes from Liftmaster. Not sure about others but that was our experience .
There may be a company that makes an opener that accepts numerous
manufacturers similar to TV remotes.

thanks
Al

[BlindHandyMan] question about remote garage door openers

2009-07-08 Thread Lee A. Stone

Is there such a thing as a remote garage door opener ? I am asking for
a FRiend who recently installed a new garage door lock by the way which
is all plastic but it works. Her antenna inside the garage seems
fine but neither the old garage door opener or the new one to include
the one in the car works. failure to comply is what I think. she has
programmed the remote to the specs. any ideas will be appreciated.
thanks. Lee

hoping someone here can help. Has anyone used the latest version of nero,
currently 9.4? If so, how accessible is it with the latest version of Jaws?
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

actually there is a sonic difference in high end applications.
re: 2% and 4% silver/tin regularly used.

But the temp shock aspects I didn't know.

Disimilar metals can make it interesting. Rhodium is a nasty plating to
which to attempt soldering, a
tin/silver/copper solder seems to work well.

Temperature can be one consideration, but the main reason for using the silver
in a c work is its ability to withstand the greater pressures. Its cost would
keep me from using it for everyday electrical soldering which is usually
mechanically sound first and uses the solder for the best connection and reduce
any corrosion inside a joint if it is just wrapped.

Silver solder melts at a much higher temp than tin/led and creates a much
stronger bond mechanically. It'll stand the temp shock of refrigeration
much better than tin/led

You wouldn't use silver for audio cause it's more expensive and
there is no point, unless maybe in a very corosive environment.

Also, some metals, Re: brass, don't take tin/led and need silver

I do seem to recall that european fuses may be "blow' at rated current
and U.S. are'flow through" at rated current.

changing fuse ratings should make no difference to how
the device operates, fuse resistance is minuscual compaired to the impedance
of the device.

Reminds me of a guy who called us wanting to know what kind of solder
to use on his vaccuum tube projects so as to get less joint
resistance. Since tubes are high impedance devices, joint resistance is
totally irrellivant, but he just wouldn't believe, or maybe

your notes here are quite interesting Tom.
I had some replacement fuses for some audio gear. (10A 250w and 6A 250W)
and they were blowing readily.
I asked the gent who sold them to me, what might be the reason as the amps
were not doing harder work with any new speakers. he said that German
fuses are "blow at" and our fuses were "travel through".
Saying what you are below, but indicating that not all are so defined.
i went back to the US and had him order the next size up in the German and
I can change the without any noticable difference under heavy loads. No
extra heat at the fins.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List 4 wire to 3

2009-04-27 Thread chiliblindman
On a normal breaker panel, every other breaker is the same polarity and will
give a zero voltage reading to each other. In a three phase panel every third
breaker is the same. The reason for it is any one single breaker is 120 volt
usually. A double 220 volt breaker can be plugged in anywhere and have 220
volt. On a three phase panel a three phase breaker can be plugged in anywhere
and you will have three phase power. There are some that aren't, but they
center in commercial applications.

Yes, if so he'd not get 220, they'd be in phase.

As someone else said the two 120s should lead back to the same
double breaker.

Hi Tom

This is why this list is so good that you can ask any question and many
members who have the experience you do not, will give you the answer.

Many thanks to all who have taken the time to respond.

ray,
We'll see what Ron thinks, but I'd not bother changing for just an ampere of
difference.

The rating of the fuse is the current it will pass in normal operation
NOT, as some think, the current required to blow it. You're only up by an
amp
even if the caravan pulls its full 15 amps, so no deal.

Problem might be that you don't know for sure that the 2 120 volt lines are
actually from the two sides of the service. There may be an easier way, but
I think you'll need an A.C. voltmeter that goes at least to 250 volts
to chec between the two hots to see that they are
actually 240 volts apart. They could be just 2 120s from two breakers
on the same side of the service.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List 4 wire to 3

2009-04-27 Thread Ron Yearns
What Max told you earlier is basically true. But do not assume anything.
Check between the two hot wires to be sure you have 240 volts between them.
They could have been hooked to the same phase for some unknown reason. The one
thing I learned many times over about electricity is check, check, check try it
and then check again. Just to make some things clear is the white of the
three wire cable on the tub grounded to metal or just running to one side of a
pump motor and or controller? If yes then the fourth wire, green or bare from
the source will hook to any metal and or the metal water pipes in the tub. The
green, grounding wire shall never carry current, unless there is a fault. The
white carries the other side of 120 volt loads.

I don't see a problem with this. Oh course in the U S we normally start at 15
and then go to 20, 25, 30 etc unless someone is using the old fuse stats which
are about extinct. A little give and take works wonders in electricity.

The 4 wire cable will have two hots, a neutral and a safety ground. The two
hots are on opposite sides of the line and there is 240 volts between them.
But between each hot and neutral there is 120 volts. So you connect each
120 volt outlet between its own hot and the common neutral. The ground must
be connected to the safety ground of the outlets. Never connect the neutral
of the outlet to the safety ground and never connect the ground and the
neutral together except at the electrical panel.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List

2009-04-26 Thread Max Robinson
After all the kidding here is another serious answer. You've already had
one and I agree with it, the difference is not enough to worry about. Is
this a charger for the batteries in the caravan?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List 4 wire to 3

2009-04-26 Thread Charles Reichardt
Hi all. I have a hot tub that runs on 240v 3 wire cable and I have two 120
lines coming together in a 4 wire cable. How do I connect a 3 wire appliance to
the 2 120 lines. I assume there are 2 hot wires, a ground and a nutral in the 4
wire cable and 2 hot wires and a ground for the hot but.

Plese help.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question about getting your basement repaired

2009-03-10 Thread Claudia
Betsy,

Yes, we did have a flood here, back in September! We did apply for FEMA
funding, but all we received was $487.
I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but that didn't even do anything for us,
except get someone to come out and pull out all of the drywall and tile that
was laid, over the cement floor!

TThis problem has not been fixed, as of yet, and again, I just don't know where
the money would come from!

It's steadily raining here, and the water just keeps seeping in!

We're under flash flood warnings, until 2 PM. tomorrow afternoon!

Claudia

I think you did a great job at remembering what you did Claudia .

staying here and she was used to hiding her pocketbook in the washer.
Low and behold she hears the washer running , now headed for the

of this. this is our house and at the end of a wash, yes, I do check the

wash why would I want to recheck the machine.. so that no longer happy

she was lucky as it was sunny so she could spread alll her " stuff" out

2009-03-10 Thread Bob Kennedy
I doubt the cards are demagnetized from running in a dryer. Even with static
electricity they should be insulated inside a pocket.

The bigger problem may be scratched from rubbing together. Only way to know if
they have a problem will be to use them again.

Hi Claudia,

In most cases, the magnetic strip will survive being washed and spun with
your clothes, delicates included, so no worries there.

In fact, those are the least of your problems, as I know how difficult it
can be having water come into your home, and not being able to stop it until
it's too late and the damage is done.

Good luck, and hope you get that problem resolved quickly.

Aloha Claudia,
I truly have impathy for you. I wish I had an answer about your basement.

As for your cards, they may be okay. We've had similar experiences
here, and sometimes they survive the washing. Your keycard will

hey Tom, thanks and depending upon the soldering, I might be up for
the task. I do pretty well with soldering cables together. NEver could
quite get the hang of soldering wire to those small pins you find on
boards and such.
You might just have a point and I'll have to try a few things I guess,
but the transformer sounds interesting.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] question on interference form computers

2009-03-03 Thread Tom Fowle
Hi Scott,
Max's idea of using ballanced inputs may work if your mixer has them, but I
doubt that it does, that's usually limited to commercial audio gear.

What you probably need to do is "break" the ground to one or other of the
computers, probably the laptop. Now, of course, just breaking
the ground won't work because you'd loose signal. What you need is transformer
isolation. There are setups intended to connect audiofrom ham radios
to computers that perform this trick, but they aren't cheap and may require
a deal of fiddling around to adapt to your setup.

I wonder if somebody makes a transformer isolated stereo cable? I'll look
around and see if i find anything. I'm pretty sure radio shlock
makes small audio transformers having a 1 to 1 turns ratio which is
what you need, but I assume you're not into doing much soldering up of
cables your self.

With all the similar hookups people are doing these days an isolated cable
should
be a product whose time has come.

As for understanding ground loops, read what max's site
has to say, and know that you need a degree in magnetics and that may
not even help. Basically when you have lots of stuff with common "grounds"
which of course have nothing at all to do with real "earth" ground, runnig
through lots of wires, noise energy couples between and amongst them and
things end up at different potentials in relationship to
each other thus generating unexpected current flow where you don't want it---
hum.

Everybody nuts yet?
If not, why not, i tried!

A balanced input is accomplished using quarter inch jacks by using a plug
and jack like the type used on stereo headphones. They are commonly
referred to as T R S which stands for tip, ring, and shield. Such plugs use
two conductor shielded cable. The shield is connected at only one end. To
connect a single ended output tip and shield only, to a balanced input, at
the single ended end connect the green inner conductor to the shield and the
red to the tip. At the other end connect the shield of the cable to the
shield of the plug, the green wire to the ring and the red wire to the tip.
Take a look at the following web page.

All of the diagrams have verbal descriptions.

Thanks, unfortunately this one is. The good thing is I have found a
way to cancel out the noise for the most part, but at the same time it
would be nice to really figure out what is going on. I'm wondering if
there is possibly an issue with the cable not being insulated enough.
These patch cable are just rca cables that terminate in a 1/8-inch
plug. Of course the mixer is not a very expensive or of the highest
quality I'm sure either.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] question on interference form computers

2009-03-03 Thread Scott Howell
Hey Max I don't live near a transmitter of any sort, but a ground loop
would make sense. What this board has is quarter-inch inputs and one
per channel. So, I use two inputs for stero output. I assume these are
balanced inputs, but I am a little embarrassed to say I don't know
exactly the difference between the two types. I used ot know this
stuff, but I have forgotten it oer the years. I'm not sure how I could
address the ground loop issue, but I have a few ideas and maybe
disconnecting the laptop from ac power might yield some results, or
just pulling the audio cable out of the mixer for the laptop and see
what happens.

tnx,

Re: [BlindHandyMan] question on interference form computers

2009-03-03 Thread Scott Howell
It is both computers causing the noise and it could be they are
creating some sort of loop. I dont' know the technical term, but
removing either does eliminate the noise. Like I said, just tweaking
the mixer will generally remove or put the sound way in the
background. So, it is not a really big deal, but I would like to
understand what the cause is.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] question on interference form computers

2009-03-03 Thread Scott Howell
I could do that, but the only reason I put the machine to sleep is
after hours and I still need it ready in the event somethng comes up.
Yes, I could probably do that or even just disconnect it, but I am
trying more to udnerstand the problem really.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] question on interference form computers

2009-03-02 Thread Max Robinson
You may have a ground loop. They are very difficult to break without
loosing a ground on something. If your mixer has balanced inputs it might
be easier. I have a 12 x 4 channel mixer, an 8 track digital recorder,
sound module, signal processor, and monitor amplifier, all hooked together
and to my computer. Only one computer though. It took a lot of making
special patch cords to get all the hum and other interference out of the
system. Do you live near a TV transmitter? I do and that was a problem
too.

2009-03-02 Thread Trouble
The kvn shouldn't have a problem with that setup. however, if you
think it is, unplug it and see if hum goes away. That will tell for
sure if the laptop is doing it or the kvn.

What if you turn off the computer instead of putting it to sleep? Maybe it is
still trying to access something even though it is sleeping, just a thought.

Hey folks, I have a rather interesting problem that I hope is
acceptable for the list. Let me explain my setup and then I'll explain
  the problem.

I have a small mixer that has three or so inputs. I have my employer's
Dell laptop, my Macintosh, and a cable into which I plug my electric
bass. All this is served by one pair of headphones. Now in order to
save on space and so forth, I have a usb KVM switch. servicing both
computers. THis KVM only handles a keyboard and mouse, but you could
connect video, which I do not. So, when I have the Mac and PC laptop
connected and running, everything is fine. If I shut the laptop lid/
put it to sleep, but leave it connected, I get this humming noise that
is not 60Mhz, but probably almost twice that. I can disconnect the
laptop and then soud goes away or if I adjust the mixer controls just
so, I can cancel out the sound. For some reason it sometimes gets
messed up and that usually is because I have made a slight adjustment
to something and then I have to start all over again isulating the
sound by tweaking things. So, has anyone have any thoughts on how I
might correct this problem, so I do not have to keeep messing with the
controls? It could be the mixer, but I suspect there is an issue with
both machines being connected to the KVM and this is a pretty cheap
KVM. The KVM is not near the computers, it is under my desk.

  Thanks,
