Re: [BlindHandyMan] Removing Splash Back Tiles
Okay! I am not handy at anything but had a thought. Before using a putty knife, what if you were to use a steamer...the kind one uses for steaming clothes...to loosen the tiles a bit. And then try the putty knife? I don't know if that would damage the sheet rock or not. I know that technique is used in removing wall paper. In places where it is hard to get the knife in, I would gently break out one of the tiles. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Removing Splash Back Tiles
If memory serves me correctly it would seem to me that the moisture in the steam might damage the sheet rock. It's only called that but in reality it's a soft material that doesn't stand up to much abuse. I'm sure that there are others on here with more information than I have though. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Removing Splash Back Tiles
Ray, I used a cheap 4 putty knife. Put the knife flat against the wall on top of the tile and tapped it with a hammer. Worked very well, sometimes taking the top layer of paper off the sheetrock, but in no instance did it damage the sheetrock to the point it needed patching. All the glue seemed to stay on the tile. Only problem is the limited working distance between the top of the knife handle and the bottom of the wall cabinets. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Removing Splash Back Tiles
Hi Ray; i just use a flat pry bar and tap it flat against the wall against the tile. The bar wont break the wall, but the tile may pull a little. I did my kitchen when I moved into this house and the entire 11 by 20 foot kitchen was floor to ceiling tile. A friend walked into to it for the first time and said wow, this is the biggest shower I ever saw! Re: [BlindHandyMan] Removing Splash Back Tiles
Ray, If it were me I would just remove the underlying sheet rock as well. It would be much less complicated and odds are you won't be able to remove the tiles without damaging the sheet rock anyway. It isn't that hard to replace sheet rock so you'd be ahead in the long run. And possibly you could replace the existing sheet rock with something better for the application such as concrete sheeting or at least water resistant sheet rock (green board). That's my suggestion for what it's worth!
